IN THE NEWS

While the U.S. and global markets were plunging on Friday after the United Kingdom voted itself out of the European Market, Discovery Communications, which launched the Discovery Channel in the UK in 1989, seemed to be taking the surprising Brexit vote in stride. “We are accustomed to operating in an industry and a world where change is constant,” said the company in a statement. “We will work closely with U.K. and E.U. leaders to successfully navigate this change and find new opportunities to shape our future. In the short-term and medium-term, our currency hedging program will significantly minimize the foreign exchange impact of the Brexit vote on our financial performance.” By day’s end, the Dow Jones U.S. Media index had closed down 3.6 percent.

A class action antitrust lawsuit alleging collusion leading to anti-competitive pricing for DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket customers was amended on Friday, dropping CBS, ESPN, Fox and NBC from the proceeding. DirecTV and the NFL remain as defendants, with the sports teams accused of creating a “lucrative monopoly” by not availing themselves of cable, satellite or Internet distribution channels individually.

Upfront selling is going “phenomenally well,” said CBS chairman and CEO Les Moonves at the Cannes Lions event last week. “We had a rough year a year ago at the upfront and that’s because people were confused about digital.” What a difference a year makes. “We’ve figured out the combination of television and digital is extremely effective,” said Moonves, adding that OTT is the company’s future.

Gilmore Girls’ Alexis Bledel appears in character as Rory Gilmore in a Twitter video with First Lady Michelle Obama promoting the Let Girls Learn initiative. Rory arrives with a load of books (“I brought all of Shakespeare – you can’t go wrong with the Bard”) for the First Lady’s trip to Liberia, Morocco and Spain. GG ended in 2007 with Rory preparing to follow Barack Obama’s campaign; four-part revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life debuts on Netflix this fall.

Will you be tuning for the Gilmore Girls show on Netflix? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

New Charter, sprung from the Charter/Time Warner Cable/Bright House Network deal, will have a steady performance in 2Q16 despite the complexity of integration, predict UBS analysts. Forecast: the company will lose 40,000 residential video subscribers in 2Q16, versus 74,000 in the year ago quarter, and gain 248,000 broadband subscribers, versus last year’s 244,000. “We expect net subscriber adds to show normal seasonal pressure but improve [year over year] given issues at telco competitors,” said a research note.

For the second year, HITN-TV is partnering with Kids First! to offer kids in New York City a week-long day camp geared for film buffs. The Kids First!
