IN THE NEWS

HBO scratched plans for a season two of Vinyl. The 1970s music drama, exec produced by Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese, had been renewed for a sophomore season despite soft ratings, with Scott Z. Burns replacing co-creator Terence Winter as showrunner. “After careful consideration, we have decided not to proceed with a second season of Vinyl,” said HBO in a statement. “Obviously, this was not an easy decision. We have enormous respect for the creative team and cast for their hard work and passion on this project.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will broadcast two weeks of live shows during the political conventions, from July 18-21 during the Republican convention in Cleveland, and from July 25-28 as the the Democratic event unfolds in Philadelphia. Colbert will host from NYC, where his guests will react to the day’s events. The CBS late nighter will also have an on-site presence at the conventions.

Michelle Obama will be James Corden’s next Carpool Karaoke guest. “Hi, I’m at the White House today,” said the Late Late Show host on the First Lady’s Snapchat account. “I’m going to take a spin in a car and sing songs with…” “Me,” chimed in Michelle Obama. The video is “coming up,” says CBS.

Cristina Ferrare, co-host of Hallmark Channel morning show Home & Family, is being replaced by Debbie Matenopoulos, the Home & Family lifestyle expert who first shot to fame as co-host of The View from 1997-99. What’s the deal? “It’s really very simple,” said Ferrare on her Facebook page. “Home and Family will have a season 5 which I am so happy for and the Network decided that they want a new co-host and that will be Debbie. She will do a great job!” Praising Ferrare’s “warmth and grace,” Michelle Vicary, Hallmark EVP of programming and publicity, added that Matenopoulos has “quickly become an audience favorite.” Lifestyle show airs weekdays at 10a.

HBO landed the most 2016 TCA Awards nominations with 12, while USA’s Mr. Robot and FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson tied with four each. PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Freeform greenlit a spin-off of The Bachelor, starring Bachelor Ben Higgins and new fiancee Lauren Bushnell, slated for October. Docu-series optimistically titled Ben and Lauren: Happily Ever After, produced by Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television, will follow the couple as they prepare to walk down the aisle. There’s a built-in audience: The recent run on ABC of season 20 of The Bachelor was the number one show on Monday night among A18-34 and W18-34, and during 1Q16 the dating show was the most social broadcast TV series in Total Tweets.

HBO grabbed the rights to 2005 bestseller Prep, about a girl’s coming of age in boarding school. Comedy series will be developed by Colleen McGuinness (30 Rock) and Carolyn Strauss (Game of Thrones).

A24 (The Carmichael Show) is producing and financing a season of Iron Fisting with Channing Tatum’s production company, Free Association. Created by Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka, who will write and exec produce, the fake Romanian cop show will be produced independently, then shopped to U.S. networks. “People are constantly asking us ‘when are you guys going to make a 1980’s era Romanian buddy cop show already,’” said Free Association in a statement. “Well, you’re welcome world.”

Amy Poehler and Paper Kite inked a new overall deal with Universal Television and new Alternative Studio for scripted and unscripted projects.

Vampire thriller The Strain and animated comedy Archer are headed to Comic-Con. FX will offer exclusive video content and panel discussions with series stars and creators at the San Diego event, July 21-24.

Ahead of the Sunday, June 26 premiere of Cameron Crowe music series Roadies, Showtime is shining a light on the real thing in documentary Miles to Go Before I Sleep (Friday, June 24 at 8p). RESEARCH

Among non-subscribers to cable TV/cord cutters, the top ranked major basic networks on high interest were Discovery (50 percent), Comedy Central (45 percent), AMC (44 percent)and FX (43 percent), according to the 2016 Beta Research Cable Network Interest study. Among the top ranked digital basic networks on high interest for cord cutters were Sony Movie Channel (44 percent), Crime & Investigation (44 percent), Investigation Discovery (43 percent) and DIY (43 percent). Networks with special appeal and the highest indices on interest in dropping cable TV and viewing TV on a tablet/smartphone included Tennis Channel, Revolt TV, Fusion, Sprout, SEC Network and Velocity – adults with high interest in these networks were more likely than others to have interest in cable TV competition and technology. The online survey was conducted in March/April 2016 among a national sample of 2,397 multichannel subscribers and a sub-sample of 449 cord-cutters.

A global study of the behaviors and expectations of teens age 15-18 reports only 12 percent in the age group believe service providers offer services to match their lifestyle. According to the study from Amdocs, provider of customer experience solutions, 56 percent of teens said they were more likely to feel anxious and alone if separated from the Internet, versus 52 percent who said they’d feel that way if separated from their family. Teens “require constant access and connectivity, and consume content differently than older generations,” said study advisor and sociologist Dr. Paul Redmond. “This is a ‘free content’ generation who love streaming and have no need for ownership, calling upon service providers to look into new business models that can improve teen affinity to their brands.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Canada’s Family Channel announced that season two of Degrassi: Next Class will debut Tuesday, July 19 at 9:45p. The premiere leads into the release of the entire season on the Family Channel app three days later.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Addressable TV ad spending will grow by 120+ percent in 2016, to $890 million, according to eMarketer, but that makes up only 1.3 percent of all TV ad spend. That spend is forecast to grow to $2.19 billion in 2018, for 2.9 percent. About half of all U.S. pay TV homes can be reached with addressable ads, says eMarketer.

It’s the first brand integration for Carpool Karaoke – and it’s a big one. While we wait for First Lady Michelle Obama to hit the right note (see above), Late Late Show’s Carpool Karaoke has big brand partners in McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, prominently featured in the current segment with Selena Gomez. In summer sweepstakes “Sip. Share. Win!,” running through August 1, McDonald’s nibblers can use Shazam to record their own karaoke videos using specially marked Coke cups; Late Late Show logos appear in-store and on McDonald’s packaging, which include tune-in mentions.

A linear TV activation and measurement product combining Neustar Data Onboarding and MarketShare Analytics with Simulmedia’s audience  targeted TV campaigns will achieve a new level of audience matching precision, say the companies. “We all know how important TV is in the media mix, but marketers are still struggling to find the best way to combine the targeting and measurement of digital media with the scale and reach of TV,” said Jon Vein, SVP of strategy, Neustar. “By joining forces with Simulmedia, advertisers and their agencies now have the power to see the true business impact of TV campaigns.”

Outside Television launched its first social engagement campaign using the OTV Amplifier platform, in partnership with Coors Light. The “Climb to the Summit” campaign allows consumers to create and share videos, for a chance to win a grand prize that includes a trip to Whistler Blackcomb, Canada, a $5000 shopping spree and their story featured on Outside Television.  “To partner with Outside Television, who places they same value on community, authenticity and adventure lifestyle, was a win for us,” said Jen Naye Herrman, associate marketing manager, Coors Family of Brands.

CASTING

The Good Wife alum Archie Panjabi landed a major recurring role on NBC drama Blindspot, as head of a secret division of the NSA. Season two premieres Wednesday, September 14 at 10p.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Viacom is launching BET Play, a $3.99/month app that will be available in 100 countries, its first direct-to-consumer SVOD. “The launch of BET Play significantly expands the brand’s geographic availability by making it available direct to consumer in many markets where it has not previously had an established presence on TV,” said Michael D. Armstrong, EVP and GM of international brand development for Viacom International Media Networks. The launch coincides with the 2016 BET Awards, airing Sunday, June 26 at 8p.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

So… no Dating Naked? Remakes of foreign TV shows will need government approval, and satellite channels are limited to two remakes during primetime, per new rules from Chinese regulators. The rules, which take effect July 1, are intended to promote content developed in China, as well as encourage “socialist core values, … patriotism and Chines fine traditions.”

Viceland is going global – fast. At Cannes Lions, Vice Media co-founder and CEO Shane Smith corrected reports saying Viceland would launch in 12 countries in 12 months. “We will in fact be launching in 44 countries (for those keeping score that’s less than four months in),” said Smith, “making Viceland the fastest growing television network in history.” New distribution deals include the Middle East, Africa, India and southeast Asia.

A+E Networks and AMC Networks announced the launch of Crime + Investigation  channel in Portugal exclusively launched through NOS (channel 113). C+I is available in over 125 territories globally.

The Royal Television Society has launched the RTS Craft & Design Awards 2016, recognizing excellence in broadcast television. Due to the large number of entries received last year, the Director’s category will now be divided into three sections: comedy drama/comedy situation, drama and documentary/factual and non-drama productions.

Turner’s Boomerang will be distributed in Hong Kong on Now TV, increasing distribution of the kids’ brand in Asia Pacific to over 30 million households since the channel’s 2014 relaunch. “We’ve seen this brand grow quickly around the region and gain momentum,” said Phil Nelson, Turner’s managing director for Southeast Asia. “Hitting the 30 million distribution mark is a great milestone.”

Independent UK based distributor DCD Rights will be debuting three new one-off documentaries: Inside the Billionaire’s Wardrobe, Battle of Jutland: The Navy’s Bloodiest Day, and The Mystery of the Roman Skulls, at this year’s NATPE Europe in Budapest.
