06.22.16
Good morning. It’s Wednesday June 22, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
TODAY’S CODEBREAKER
Waterfall: In programmatic video, the term Waterfall refers to the order of priority in which advertisers have the opportunity to buy inventory. Demand sources might include exchanges, direct sales, or networks.
TOP NEWS
Well that’s one way to get people on board. The Wall Street Journal reports that Facebook has been paying media companies and celebrities to use the Facebook Live service. According to the Journal, the company has shelled out over $50 million to the likes of CNN, BuzzFeed, and Kevin Hart. No real secret as to why they’re doing it: Facebook has high hopes for Live, but first it has to sell both users and content-producers on the platform. Accelerating the participation of quality content-creators seems like a no brainer. And keep in mind, $50 million is pocket change for Facebook.
It’s official: As a TechCrunch report foreshadowed this week, Yahoo’s Tumblr is launching Tumblr Live Video, a new live-streaming initiative. But unlike Facebook or Twitter’s Periscope, Yahoo will not be streaming through its own service; rather, it will rely on streaming partners. Tumblr will support live video from YouTube, YouNow, Upclose, and AOL’s Kanvas. Yahoo says that it’s working with organizations and media partners – including Mashable, MTV, the Huffington Post, and MTV – to live-stream dedicated events and content.
Twitter and its video app Vine are both increasing their max video lengths. On Twitter, advertisers and some publishers will be able to post videos that are up to ten minutes long – a huge increase from the previous maximum of 30 seconds. Percentage-wise, Vine’s increase is more massive. In a new beta test, select Viners will be able to post videos ranging up to 140 seconds in length. To be clear, the six-second looping video format remains intact. But that classic format will serve as a trailer of sorts. Click on “Watch more” button, and you’ll be taken to the longer vid. Finally, Twitter will be launching a new video discovery tool: Directly below a playing video, Twitter users will be able to peruse a vertical list of related videos that might interest them.
Twitter has also launched Twitter Engage, a new standalone analytics app for influencers. The app, designed to help influencers grow their audiences, offers real-time analytics about how their tweets are performing. The app also surfaces @ mentions from fans and from other influencers.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
And just like that, another virtual and augmented reality company is born. CryWorks, a new media company aimed at creating VR and AR experiences, announced its official launch, as well as a new seed investment round. New investors include Michael Bay‘s 451 Media Group, 500 Mobile Collective, and the venture fund WI Harper Group. Founder Euan Macondald, a VFX/CGI pro with experience at Pixar and Lucasfilm/ILM, will serve as CEO. Co-founder Hans Uhlig, an experienced technical director at companies including Electronic Arts and Polygon, will serve as CTO. And co-Founder Kymber Lim, a VFX producer with experience at companies such as Digital Domain and Method Studios, will serve as Chief Content Officer.
PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
Netflix has greenlighted a new true-crime miniseries from Oscar-nominated director/writer/actress Sarah Polley. Polley, whose filmography includes 2006’s Away from Her and 2012’s Stories We Tell, will write and produce Alias Grace, which is based on the 1996 Margaret Atwood novel of the same name. The novel centers on the real-life maid Grace Marks, a poor immigrant who was convicted for the 1843 of murder of her employer. Mary Harron of American Psycho fame is slated to direct. The series will stream on Netflix globally. and will be broadcast on CBC in Canada.
Xfinity – aka Comcast Cable – may be immersed in programming, but that doesn’t mean it tends to have its own brand attached to original content. That changes with the launch of Glued, the Xfinity brand’s first-ever original web series. The webisodes, made with the help of EP Sharon Horgan and director John Riggi, are a comedic take on how people’s favorite TV shows change the way they act and interact with each other. The series was made in partnership with the ad agency Droga5, as well as the branded comedy ad producer Merman X Pulse, a joint enterprise between the contents studio Pulse Films and the production company Merman.
Acorn Media Enterprises, the UK development arm of the distribution company RLJ Entertainment, will be producing a new two-part adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel The Witness for the Prosecution. Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Productions will co-produce. The adaptation will be led by the writer Sarah Phelps, who last year adapted the Agatha Christie-based miniseries And Then There Were None. The Witness for the Prosecution will debut on BBC One in the U.K. In the U.S., the series will make its eventual premiere on Acorn TV, RLJ Entertainment’s Anglophile-friendly streaming service.
Hemisphere Media Group, a U.S. media company targeting Spanish-language TV and cable networks in the U.S. and Latin America, recently held an Upfront event in NYC. The company’s two major brands include WAPA America (the cable network arm of Puerto Rico’s WAPA Television) and Cinelatino, a Spanish-language movie network. Among Cinelatino’s new programming: a new five-part series based on the right-hand man of the notorious drug kingpin El Chapo, and the exclusive U.S. TV premiere of ¿Que Le Dijiste a Dios?, a musical based on the songs of Juan Gabriel. WAPA America, meanwhile, will be launching Mi Isla, Mi Orgullo a new on-air branding campaign celebrating Puerto Rican heritage and culture. Yesterday, Cynopsis Digital spoke with Hemisphere CEO Alan Sokol about the company’s digital efforts, which are active across the web, mobile, social media, and YouTube. “Digital is a core and growing part of our business,” he said, “and it is something that we look at as part and parcel of every creative aspect of our business. Nothing is just about TV anymore. So we strive to integrate digital organically into everything we do.” Probably the most interesting and ambitious opportunities for them in digital, he added, “are in connection with our original productions. From inception, we can develop digital extensions and digital integrations…that can range from having alternate endings, to having interviews with the stars, to having audiences submit their own versions of theme songs.” As for Wapa America, which is more news and live–event oriented: “Our focus is on extensions of news – using digital to provide users the opportunity to really drill down in a deep way in news stories they’re interested in.” Social media, he said, is crucial to reaching the audience: “We want to be where they are.”
RESEARCH
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirstDigital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged onFacebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
Streaming Series (6/13/16 – 6/19/16)
Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.
The real-time TV ad metrics company iSpot.tv tracked every aspect of the commercials airing during the 2016 NBA Finals. To determine the ads generating the most digital response, iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines. Below, take at the Finals results through all seven games.
Jamie Foxx for Verizon: “It ain’t about ‘Can you hear me now’”
Through the entire seven-game run, the NBA Finals racked up a whopping 4.2 billion TV ad impressions, with 98.4% of the views coming in via live linear or same-day viewing, according to iSpot.tv. The biggest bucks were spent by Samsung Mobile, Toyota, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. and Nissan. But one of the surprise winners in terms of digital response was Verizon, whose “I Got Verizon” spot features a heavily disguised Jamie Foxx performing a catchy tune that indirectly calls out Paul Marcarelli, the former Verizon “Can you hear me now?” guy who recently defected to Sprint. “It ain’t about ‘Can you hear me now,’” Foxx raps, “it’s can you see me now.” Apple also crashed the most buzzed-about ads party with new “Shot on iPhone by” spots that feel like gorgeous little music videos; they feature moody songs by Snoh Aalegra and Loyle Carner.
Methodology: iSpot.tv, the real-time TV ad metrics company, is tracking every aspect of the commercials airing during the 2016 NBA Finals. To determine the ads generating the most digital response, iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines.
When comes to star power, do digital influencers match up with mainstream celebrities? According to new data that Q Scores provided to Variety, the answer is…yes and no. Q Scores, which measures consumer appeal, found that, compared with mainstream celebrities like Tom Hanks and Adele, awareness of digital stars is still fairly low, even among U.S. teens. However, Q Scores also found that fan engagement around digital influencers is unusually high – stronger than the fan engagement around most other types of celebrities. Given that that’s the case, it becomes easier to see why influencers are commanding ad dollars and branded partnerships: Their followings are passionate devoted, and are paying close attention. You can find Variety’s full story here.
Back in 2012, Facebook spent $1 billion to buy Instagram. That’s looking been looking like more and more of a bargain ever since. Instagram now has over 500 million active users. Video is a big part of that – particularly the fact that the max video length was quadrupled in March, from 15 seconds to 60. According to Instagram, video watching has increased by 150% over the last six months. Though to be fair, the company didn’t provide any precise viewing figures.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Canvas Media Studios, a digital studio launched last year, took in some new funding. MNM Creative and Third Wave Digital invested an undisclosed amount into the startup. (According to Canvas, it was a seven figure investment.) In addition, Canvas has made a new hire: Tracy Aftergood will serve as VP of Development. Aftergood previously served as a VP at MediaWeaver Entertainment.
TRIVIA
Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp co-founded which company? You can find the answer in tomorrow’s newsletter.
Yesterday’s Trivia Question: Close to two weeks ago, a measurement company asserted that Netflix’s Fuller House has received viewership numbers on par with the most popular cable dramas. Which measurement company was it? Answer: Symphony Advanced Media
