ADVERTISING
Ernst & Young’s new report on the Internet of Things and how it will impact the media industry predicts 30 billion connected devices worldwide by 2020, and a projected increase in revenue of 16.5 percent by 2018. The report also notes that the explosion of subscription OTT services, on-demand options offered by broadcast networks, DVRs and mobile broadband has “created the expectation that everyone can have access to any content, anytime and anywhere.” But while the amount and quality of content have increased, “excessive numbers of irrelevant and intrusive ads across all of these platforms and experiences have propelled consumers to increasingly adopt ad-blocking technology, which puts already strained revenue models at additional risk.” IoT, says the report, “may provide elegant solutions for these issues by using the data collected from new sensors to enhance personalization of content and advertising.”
Standard Media Index crunched the numbers and found cable TV ad spending was up 6 percent in May versus last year, while broadcast advertising dipped 1 percent. From October to May the increase was 7 percent for broadcast and 2 percent cable versus the same period on 2015. "Off the back of May’s strong results, we expect the networks to deliver very healthy upfront increases in the coming weeks,” said SMI CEO James Fennessy. “A 16 percent increase in scatter dollars through the first half of the broadcast year proves that advertisers are moving money back to TV after some experimentation in digital last year, which didn’t drive the results brands were hoping for.”
The news was even better for Spanish-language networks. Spending on Univision, Telemundo, UniMas, Galavision and ESPN Deportes was up 18 percent in May 2016 versus the year prior, according to SMI, helped by hefty increases in categories including alcoholic beverages (up 64 percent from last year), fast food restaurants (up 39 percent) and telecommunications (up 37 percent).
