Comedian Michelle Collins is leaving her co-host perch on The View after one season. “I’m officially the newest member of the ‘One Seasoner’ club, the latest graduate of talk show boot camp,” confirmed Collins on Instagram, describing her experience on the ABC talker as “surreal and fabulous.” In an internal memo, exec producer Candi Carter called Collins “A gracious presence on stage and off.”.
NBCUniversal and Dish Network reached an agreement that scuttles all litigation between the companies over ad-skipping technology, including Dish’s AutoHop, arriving at a carriage deal that allows Dish subscribers to ad-skip a week after a show initially airs. Fox and CBS have already settled similar suits that alleged Dish’s ad-skipping tech infringes on copyrights and breached carriage deals.
The battle over Sumner Redstone’s media empire shows no sign of abating. Regarding to the refusal of Viacom Inc. CEO Philippe Dauman and four others to leave the Viacom board after Redstone replaced them, Redstone’s privately held holding company, National Amusements, issued a statement objecting to Viacom paying for Dauman’s legal and PR expenses. “Under Philippe Dauman’s leadership, Viacom is diverting valuable corporate resources to mount a legal and PR campaign against Sumner Redstone, despite the fact that Redstone is Viacom’s Founder, Chairman Emeritus and controlling shareholder,” said the company. Responded Viacom, “It is certainly in the interests of all Viacom’s stockholders that …actions be pursued in order to preserve the independence of the board.” At issue is whether 93-year-old Redstone is mentally competent to call the shots.
As other TV shows craft “For Your Consideration” Emmy ads awash with praise from critics, The Bachelor is taking a different tack. ABC’s guilty pleasure dating show is campaigning for statuettes with FYC ads featuring celebrity quotes culled from interviews (“Yes, I help my kids with their homework, but I also get bored doing it…I’m gonna say it: I’d prefer to watch The Bachelor,” Kate Hudson told In Style). It’s worth a shot – in 20 seasons, the show has never gotten a nomination.
Political action committee Americans Against Insecure Billionaires with Tiny Hands released an ad pointing out the potential pitfalls of a Donald Trump presidency. “If the White House phone rings at 3 a.m., will his little hands even pick up the receiver?” says a woman in the tongue-in-cheek spot that then asks viewers to sign a petition demanding that the GOP nominee’s hand measurements be released. A spokesman said the ad aired once locally on MSNBC. Trump has battled the small hands label since Spy magazine dubbed him a “short-fingered vulgarian” in the 1980s. In March, Trump insisted his hands are “normal. Slightly large, actually.”

ADVERTISING
With money that in recent years was diverted to digital or the scatter market returning to the upfront market, broadcast demands for CPM increases are hitting double digits, reports Variety. NBC is looking for increases between 11-13 percent, according to Variety’s sources, while CBS is calling for a 9-12 percent rise and Fox and ABC are pushing for hikes of 8.5-10 percent.
DISTRIBUTION
On Thursday, June 16, Dish Network stopped carrying NFL Network and NFL RedZone - and it may be passing on the sports nets for a while. The NFL went on the offensive in a message online, urging football fans to “find a provider that carries NFL and NFL RedZone now and the good news there are plenty of choices.” Said Dish, “Our contract with the NFL Network has expired. We remain open to a fair offer that allows us to carry this content at an appropriate value to our customers.”
DIGITAL DOINGS
NBC is the first broadcast network to develop and launch a skill for Amazon’s Alexa, allowing fans to find up-to-date information on the net’s shows. “NBC is committed to exploring Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms, particularly around entertainment content, so it absolutely made sense for us to begin engaging with our television viewers on the Amazon Alexa platform,” said Rob Hayes, EVP, digital, NBC Entertainment.
