Up against the fifth and final NBA game on ABC, HBO‘s Game of Thrones drew 7.1 million viewers at 9p for its season four finale. That’s up 32 percent from the season three finale and just under the epic fantasy’s May 4 season high of 7.2 million. Over two airings, the drama delivered 9.3 million total viewers.

IN THE NEWS

Newsmax TV, softly launched Monday with an initial nine hours of live news and talk, signed a deal with best-selling author and legal expert Alan Dershowitz to host a weekly advice series. How will the liberal-leaning lawyer fit in at the right-tilting news net? “Whether you agree or disagree with Alan Dershowitz, you always listen to what he says,” said Newsmax Media CEO Christopher Ruddy. “We are confident that our viewers will find his advice useful.” You and the Law debuts this summer.

Netflix wants to grab ‘em early, ordering an animated film and series based on Mattel franchise Ever After High. The streaming service recently announced deals for Dinotrux with Dreamworks Animation, and Magic School Bus with Scholastic.

To combat the increased leverage some cable and satellite companies will have thanks to deals like the upcoming Comcast and Time Warner Cable merger, media companies are thinking acquisition  or should be, analysts told The Wall Street Journal. “Consolidation might not seem to have much positive impact in the short term, but could really benefit content and channels companies over time by providing negotiating scale and diversity of product,” Michael Morris, a media analyst at Guggenheim Securities, told the WSJ.

The BBC is singing a different tune. The UK broadcaster announced an initiative it dubs BBC Music, its “strongest commitment to music in 30 years.” Included in the programming: The BBC Music Awards Show and a documentary about Genesis, reuniting the band’s original members. Said BBC director of music Bob Shennan, “We will set a new benchmark for quality and scale, with bigger events and more world-class programming delivered in new ways.”

President Obama’s oldest daughter, Malia, worked as a production assistant one day last week in LA, a source told The Wrap. The almost-16-year-old was spotted on the set of CBS summer sci-fi series Extant, launching Wednesday, July 9 at 9p. Dad was in town Saturday to deliver the commencement address at the University of California Irvine.

Julianna Goldman was named a CBS News correspondent, beginning in August in the Washington Bureau. Goldman had been a White House correspondent for Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Television.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Conde Nast Entertainment signed a first-look development deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television for scripted shows. “My professional and personal relationships with [Conde Nast Entertainment president Dawn Ostroff] have spanned the past two decades,” said Twentieth chairman and CEO Dana Walden. “She’s one of the most talented executives I’ve ever worked with and is also a close friend. Creating a business opportunity together now that she’s at Conde Nasta brand we’ve long admiredwas a huge priority for us both.”

Ogilvy Entertainment and chef/restaurateur Mario Batali are partnering for ccMF Productions, to create food and lifestyle programming for Millennials. Batali described the content to AdWeek as “relatively progressive, but we’re not preachy.”

Castle creator and showrunner Andrew Marlowe is passing the primary duty baton to exec producer David Amann. “Over the past four seasons, David has proven himself to be a tremendous leader and a great steward for our show’s unique voice,” said Marlowe, who will still have a presence on the ABC procedural heading into season seven this fall, while focusing on developing new projects for ABC Studios.

Revolt network’s “Road to Truth” study offers 7 rules for marketing to Millennials (#6: Don’t be everywhere, but somewhere, strategically). What prompted the research? “While marketers recognize the growth opportunity with Millennials, we found a need to dig deeper about how to engage the elusive group in a manner that meets their expectations,” Bob Gruters, Revolt EVP, sales & integrated marketing tells Cynopsis. “Road to Truth represents an action-oriented approach to winning with the audience.”

Over 90 percent of marketers aren’t confident they are effectively measuring content, according to a report from Contently, “A Crisis of Confidence: The State of Content Marketing Measurement.” Out of 302 marketers surveyed, 7 percent were not measuring the success of their content at all.

COMING UP

Actor and food show vet Anthony Anderson (Iron Chef America, Chopped) is back in front of the camera, this time to sample local delicacies at food fairs around the country in Food Fest Nation. Series premieres on Food Network Monday, July 21 at 9p.

The second half of season five of MTV’s Teen Mom 2 returns on a new night, Wednesday, July 16 at 10p. On tap for the docu-series: another round of legal issues, health problems and broken relationships.

E!’s A-List Vacations shows the hoi polloi how to summer like celebs who use aliases and insist that certain colors be removed from their rooms before they’ll step inside. Hosted by Bachelorette alum Ali Fedotowsky and her boyfriend Kevin Manno, the special premieres Thursday, June 26 at 8p.

Outdoor Channel launches Jim Shockey’s Uncharted, chronicling the avid adventurer’s treks into dangerous destinations, on Wednesday, July 2 at 7p. The show is produced by Shockey’s son, Branlin.

Zendaya Coleman (Shake it Up) will star in Lifetime movie Aaliyah: Princess of R&B (wt), based on the bestseller about the “sweet but street” performer’s rise to fame and tragic death in a plane crash. The movie films this summer for a fall premiere.

Nat Geo’s Brain Games returns with 10 new season two eps Monday, July 14 at 9p, followed by the series premiere of Going Deep with David Rees at 10p.

RATINGS

Despite a midnight Italian start time on Saturday, the Italy/England World Cup match drew 12 million viewers, a record 82 percent market share between RAI and Sky-Italia. In England the match averaged 11.5 million viewers, a 68.4 percent share.

In preliminary Nielsens, Sunday’s turned-out-to-be-final NBA game on ABC dominated the night with a 6.0 rating among A18-49, up 7 percent from last year’s game five, but down 31 percent from 2013’s game seven.

The season 3 premiere of TNT’s Major Crimes rose to 6.8 million viewers in Live + 3 delivery, a 4 percent increase over last summer’s season premiere and a 32 percent increase over the season 3 premiere’s Live + Same Day. The debu of the net’s new crime drama Murder in the First grew to 5.2 million viewers in Live + 3 delivery, up 37 percent over the premiere telecast’s Live + Same Day.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: NBC won the most A18-49 viewers Friday with 2.2/9, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen, winning every hour with the Stanley Cup Playoffs. NBC averaged 1.4/7 at 8p, followed by 1.0/4 for ABC’s Shark Tank. Hockey scored 1.8/8 at 9p, versus 1.3/5 for Univision’s Que Vida Me Robo. Against 2.3/9 for NBC at 10p, ABC’s 20/20 earned 1.4/5.
