With the gap narrowing in the A25-54 demo between Today and ABC‘s Good Morning America, the NBC morning show struck a deal with Matt Lauer that will keep him onboard for "multiple" years. "There is nobody I would rather have in the Today anchor chair than Matt," said Deborah Turness, president of NBC News.

IN THE NEWS

Alex Trebek set the Guinness World Record for most game show episodes hosted by the same presenter. "It means I’ve been around a long time," said the man who’s overseen 6,829 eps of Jeopardy! since 1984, humbly attributing his success to luck, then adding he hopes to stick around "a few more years.’

The owners of Univision have been having (very) early talks with companies about selling the Spanish-language net, reported the Wall Street Journal last week. The group of investors, including billionaire Haim Saban, bought Univision for $13.7 billion in 2007, and are asking over $20 billion, sources told the Journal. Media companies reportedly in the mix: CBS and Time Warner Inc.

Come hear Christine Dilandro, SVP, Head of Media & Integrated Marketing for Citi, Kerri Vickers, Senior Media Director for Razorfish, and Yahoo! present a case study on their digital partnership on June 19 at 10 on the Park in Manhattan at the Digital Video Monetization Summit. Register for the summit today!

NBC News-owned Breaking News launched a new feature to its iOS app that pushes "lightning fast," proximity-based news alerts. ‘Our mission is to deliver the breaking stories that are uniquely important to you," said Cory Bergman, GM of the startup. "Few things are as important as learning about a big breaking story that just happened near your location."

A Mercedes crashed into the glass-fronted lobby of CNN headquarters in Atlanta on Friday. No one was injured. The 22-year-old driver was arrested for possession of marijuana and (surprise!) reckless driving.

Google and ESPN have teamed for World Cup coverage. Google Search is featuring clips from matches and post-game highlights from ESPN FC, with traffic-boosting links to highlights and live matches on WatchESPN. It’s the first time in-game sports content has been integrated on Google Search.

The spat between Netflix and Verizon got nasty enough to draw the attention of the FCC. After messages posted on Netflix blamed Verizon for slow loading times and the telecom company responded with a cease and desist letter, the FCC’s chairman, Tom Wheeler – noting he’s experience poor service himself – wrote in a memo on Friday that he had "directed the Commission staff to obtain the information we need to know what is going on… in order understand whether consumers are being harmed."

The Daytime Emmy Awards couldn’t find a TV home, but they found a host. Comedian Kathy Griffin will emcee the shindig, to be live-streamed from the Beverly Hilton ballroom Sunday, June 22. "I can only hope that at the end of the evening, critics and fans alike will compare it to the experience they once had watching Neil Armstrong take man’s first step on the moon," said Griffin.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Carol Mendelsohn, who announced last week she was leaving her co-showrunner spot after 14 years at CSI and CBS Television Studios, landed a three-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television. "With her ability to tell stories that engage audiences everywhere, and the array of opportunities for great content, there is no limit to what we can accomplish together," said Sony TV president of programming and production Jamie Erlicht.

NBC is developing an event series about the Beatles, from The Tudors’ Michael Hirst, Ben Silverman and Teri Weinberg. Should the project get the go-ahead, it will tell the story of the Fab Four in eight episodes.

How is digital reeling in more dollars for World Cup coverage? Chris Wagner, EVP of NeuLion, explains how nets can reap benefits in "The World Cup Goes Digital," this week in Cynsiders. And while you’re on the site, please take a few seconds to weigh in on the Cynopsis.com "Who will win the World Cup?’ poll.

COMING UP

Make way for another awards show, as nets hustle to boost live programming. The American Country Countdown Awards, spun from American Country Countdown, a radio show launched in 1973, will air on Fox Monday, December 15 at 8p. Fox is teaming with Academy of Country Music Awards‘ Dick Clark Productions and Cumulus for the two-hour live concert event, broadcast from Nashville.

Filipino cable net Lifestyle is counting on producer-turned-host Marc Anthony Nicolas to light up upcoming talk show, On Your Marc! with star pals. "Working daily with Hollywood celebrities, he is uniquely able to bring out a side of them that few people get to see," said exec producer and co-creator Philip Anthony. Show launched Sunday, June 15 at 9:30p.

The Weather Channel‘s AMHQ is scheduled to air a segment on sun safety tips this morning at 8a, live from Virginia Beach. An American Cancer Society expert will be on hand with sunscreen tips.

RETURNING SHOWS

Season three of Bravo‘s Don’t Be Tardy, featuring Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Kim Zolciak Biermann, premieres Thursday, July 17 at 9p.

Syfy‘s Face-Off is back for a seventh go-round Tuesday, July 22 at 9p. This season’s theme: "Life and Death."

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Hulu sold sole sponsorship rights to Hyundai for new unscripted series The High Road, hosted by restaurateur Mario Batali. The show will be presented by Hyundai, supporting its new Genesis model – but the car company’s not just going after kids. "I don’t think digital is a youth play anymore," Hyundai’s director of marketing David Matathia told Adweek. "Those platforms are more and more common."

Upfront sales are almost behind CBS, which boasted it "once again achieved the highest pricing and most total dollars in the upfront marketplace." As for C7? The seven-day window is "now playing a meaningful part in our negotiations." Ad time in CBS’s new Thursday Night Football is still being negotiated, said AdAge.

CASTING

Mary Steenburgen broke the news via Twitter Thursday that she’s joining the cast of Netflix‘s  Orange Is the New Black. "Will I be in orange or black?" teased the Joan of Arcadia alum.

RATINGS

Ratings for ABC‘s coverage of the NBA finals Thursday beat the other Big Four nets combined in the A18-49 demo from 9p-11p, 6.0 to 2.7, according to Nielsen.

Score! The opening game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup (Brazil versus Croatia) on Thursday drew 4.4 million viewers, the highest number since ESPN started receiving local ratings for the event in 1998. Friday’s Spain/Netherlands match delivered 3.1 million.

The season six premiere of A&E‘s Duck Dynasty delivered a 1.8 rating among A18-49 and 4.6 million total viewers Wednesday night. That’s down 45 percent and 46 percent, respectively, versus the season five bow in January, but enough to handily beat cable competition for the night.

The third season averaged 1.1 million total viewers, making it the most-watched season of the series.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: ABC scored the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 4.7/17, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. A 1.7/6 for CBS’s The Big Bang Theory and Mom beat Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen by .1 at 8p but ABC’s coverage of the NBA finals took over at 9p with 5.2/18, followed by 1.5/5 for Univision’s Que Vida me Robo. Basketball scored 6.4/21 to win 10p, versus 1.2/4 for NBC’s Last Comic Standing and Univision’s Que Pobres Tan Ricos.
