Matthew C. Blank, Chairman and CEO of Showtime Networks since 1995, will pass his CEO title on to David Nevins, current president of Showtime, on January 1. “Matt Blank has led Showtime as its Chairman and CEO through two decades of dramatic change and evolution in the industry,” said Leslie Moonves, president and CEO, CBS Corporation. “One of the key attributes I look for in my leadership team is the capacity and willingness to bring up the next generation of management. Matt has been an eager partner and invaluable contributor to the succession planning process.” Blank will continue as Chairman of the division after the transition.

IN THE NEWS

A succession plan is also in the works at 21st Century Fox. Numerous reports on Thursday cited sources saying Rupert Murdoch, 84, will hand his CEO crown to son James; the elder Murdoch would remain executive chairman with son Lachlan as co-executive chairman. Chase Carey would give up the COO title but continue as advisor. Last year, heir apparent James Murdoch was promoted to co-COO. “The matter of succession is on the agenda at our upcoming, regularly scheduled board meeting,” Nathaniel Brown, a Fox spokesman, said in a statement.

In a move FCC chairman Tom Wheeler called “a huge victory for Internet consumers and innovators,” the DC Circuit Court denied requests for a stay to the FCC’s Open Internet order. “Starting Friday, there will be a referee on the field to keep the Internet fast, fair and open,” said Wheeler. “Blocking, throttling, pay-for-priority fast lanes and other efforts to come between consumers and the Internet are now things of the past.”

The Republican candidates who don’t make the cut for Fox News’ GOP debate on August 6 won’t be left out the conversation – they’ll just sit at a different table. The net is hosting a 90-minute forum at 1p, carried live from Cleveland, for those who don’t qualify for the primetime session. “Our intention has always been to provide coverage to the wide field of Republican candidates,” said FNC EVP of news editorial Michael Clemente. FNC had announced it would use national polling to whittle the field of candidates to the top 10, a decision that had some Republicans calling foul.

About 7 percent of U.S. households – 8.4 million – have broadband and OTT service but not pay-TV subscriptions, according to a report from Parks Associates, which projects sub revenue from OTT services will climb from $9 billion in 2014 to $19 billion by 2019. “The OTT video services marketplace continues its rapid rate of change, impacting the video ecosystem across world markets,” said Brett Sappington, director of research at Parks. “While operator attempts at TV Everywhere have made little impact, OTT video services are experiencing a boom…. How the industry responds to this change will ultimately affect the fundamental structure of the video industry for years to come.”

Despite the fact that the number of apps available is constantly growing, the number actually used has remained at about 27 for the past two years, according to a new report from Nielsen. But the time spent using apps is increasing, to 37 hours and 28 minutes/month in 3Q14, up 63 percent from 3Q12. “The reward for being one of the chosen apps is heavy engagement by the user,” notes the report.

Lifetime released a trailer for A Deadly Adoption, the once-secret Lifetime movie starring Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig. Campy two-hour tale from Mar Vista Entertainment and National Picture Show premieres Saturday, June 20.

TV One announced the three finalists for its inaugural sponsorship of the American Black Film Festival’s TV One Screenplay Competition: Brandi Ford, Kiki McKnight and Chad Quinn. The net is also debuting two of its original movies, Runaway Island and Girlfriends’ Getaway 2, as well as holding its first “Celebrity Scene Stealers” event, at ABFF in NYC, now through June 14.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nat Geo and executive producers Morgan Freeman, Lori McCreary and James Younger of Revelations Entertainment are teaming for The Story of God, exploring mankind’s quest to understand the divine. Freeman will host the series, slated for 2016 in the U.S. and globally in 171 countries and 45 languages. Faith-based programming may be on the upswing, but it’s hardly new territory for Nat Geo, which boasts “a rich history of producing thought-provoking programming on religious topics, such as the highly regarded specials Killing Jesus,Gospel of Judas, and Secrets of the Bible,” Tim Pastore, president, original programming & production, reminds Cynopsis. “Great TV should reflect and tap into the interests and beliefs of the audience, and faith is a huge part of many people’s lives. Faith-based programming represents a chance to reach a much broader and global audience – to engage with those viewers who believe, those who want to learn more than they think they know, and a secular audience.”

ABC Family greenlit scripted drama pilot Stay, a thriller about a widowed police detective and his two daughters stranded at a mysterious hotel. The pilot, one of three recent orders, is another step towards the net’s goal of doubling its original programming over the next four years.

FremantleMedia and Jadran Film Zagreb are partnering to bring the work of one of Croatia’s most popular writers, Marija Juric Zagorka, to global TV audiences. Bestsellers in Central and Eastern Europe, Zagorka’s novels have never been translated into English. Jadran and FremantleMedia’s will develop scripts based on the novels and look for international investment.

Nickelodeon picked up a third season of animated preschool series Blaze and the Monster Machines. The first preschool show to cover all areas of STEM in every episode, Blaze ranks as the number one preschool show in its time period on TV.

A weekly primetime talk show hosted by longtime friends Tyrese Gibson (Transformers) and ordained minister/reality star Rev Run (Rev Run’s Sunday Suppers) will debut on OWN in early 2016. Eight-ep series from CBS Television Distribution will feature discussions from a man’s point of view. “When Rev Run, Tyrese and CBS came to us with the idea of a primetime series we were energized by the chance to bring OWN viewers something fresh and entertainingly real in the ‘love space,’” said Sheri Salata, OWN president. “We can’t wait to turn them loose.”

Keith Eisner moves from The Good Wife to serve as exec producer on upcoming Epix comedy Graves under an overall deal with Lionsgate TV. Eisner will also develop and produce new programming.

COMING UP

Outcasts, thieves and gamblers populate Gunslingers, returning for season two on American Heroes Channel Sunday, July 19 at 10p. The show is AHC’s number one original series in Prime delivery among P25-54 (213,000) and M25-54 (151,000); its debut scored a net record 770,000 P2+ viewers.

The lifesaving power of faith is explored in TLC’s Answered Prayers, a six-parter hosted by Roma Downey (Touched By an Angel) launching Sunday, July 26 at 10p. Docu-series comes from Downey’s LightWorkers Media.

Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones star in a performance of Driving Miss Daisy recorded in Melbourne, Australia, airing on Thirteen’s Great Performances Friday, July 17 at 9p on PBS (check local listings).

The inaugural season of El Rey wrestling series Lucha Underground will wrap with a two hour finale event, “Ultima Lucha,” on Wednesday, August 5. “All of our compelling storylines and characters will intersect in an action-packed and entertaining spectacle that our fans have come to expect from us,” promised exec producer and showrunner Eric Van Wagenen.

Little Big Town will threepeat as hosts of CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock, airing Tuesday, August 8 at 8p on ABC. The quartet is the reigning CMA Vocal Group of the Year.

Leading up to Father’s Day, the dad of Idiotest host Ben Gleib is a special guest on the GSN game show Wednesday, June 17 at 10p. Mom’s along for the ride.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

DHX Media inked a deal for U.S. broadcast and on-demand rights to the new Teletubbies series for Nick Jr. Nickelodeon also took all 365 eps of the original series for mobile subscription service Noggin.
