IN THE NEWS

On Tuesday, Savannah Guthrie shared the news with her Today co-hosts (and America) that she’s pregnant with her second child, and therefore bowing out of covering the Summer Olympics. “You’re going to have to go to beach volleyball without me,” Guthrie told Matt Lauer. An outbreak of the mosquito-borne Zika virus has been blamed for severe birth defects in Rio, where the Games will be held; NBCUniversal has told employees they are not required to make the trip.

At a hearing on Tuesday to determine if 93-year-old Sumner Redstone is mentally competent to make business decisions, a Massachusetts judge said a ruling would come later this month. “I grew up in a housing project where I was lucky to have a quarter in my pocket,” said Judge George Phelan. “I’m still trying to wrap my head around the concept of billions with a ‘B,’ and it may take me a few days.” Viacom chief Philippe Dauman, attempting to overturn his removal last month from the Sumner M. Redstone Trust and the board of directors of National Amusements, the parent company of CBS and Viacom, had asked to move quickly in light of Redstone’s “overwhelming physical ailments.”

Fox News did not share questions that were to be asked during Donald Trump’s talk with Bill O’Reilly ahead of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s interview on Monday, said senior executive producer David Tabacoff. The issue came up after Trump, asked on-air whether he paid female executives less than males, replied, “I just had it checked because I heard this was going to be a question…I have a good source.” Not at Fox News, according to Tabacoff: “We never, ever tell the guests what questions will be asked. Bill O’Reilly is the only person who knows exactly what he’ll ask.”

Dr. Mehmet Oz (Dr. Oz) is partnering in a venture that would allow immigrants to view TV programs from their home countries online. The $14.99/month service, JungoTV, targeting Arabic, Chinese, Filipino, Greek, Iranian, Italian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese communities, launches in September with 18,000 hours of programming. Oz is partnering on the project with Sandy Climan of Entertainment Media Ventures.

Kerry Washington will receive the “Actors Inspiration Award” at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s 7th Annual Los Angeles Golf Classic on Monday, June 13 in Burbank. The Scandal star, a long-time champion of civil rights and public service, is being recognized by the Foundation as a SAG-AFTRA member who has given back to fellow actors and the community at large.

CBS Corp. will be among the honorees at the I Have a Dream Foundation’s 35th Annual “Spirit of the Dream” Gala in NYC tomorrow. CBS brought attention to the foundation, which has supported over 17,000 low-income students on the path to college, with a 60 Minutes segment in 1986, and continued to propel public awareness through the CBS Cares public service campaign. CBS correspondent Bill Whitaker will host the event.

Decisions, decisions: The National Cable & Telecommunications Association plans to hold its Internet & Television Expo in D.C. from Wednesday, April 26-Friday, April 28. Across the country in Vegas, the National Association of Broadcasters will be busy with its NAB Show from Saturday, April 22-Thursday, April 27. Why the conflict? “The show’s dates in D.C. had to work around both Passover and Easter (and spring breaks around that time), the convention center’s calendar, and the potential congressional calendar,” an NCTA spokesperson told Light Reading.

Sony Pictures Television grabbed a minority stake in new UK venture Blueprint Television, with an eye on international distribution of high-end UK drama series that travel well. Blueprint Television springs from Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent of Blueprint Pictures (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel). “Pete and Graham are exactly the kind of people we want to partner with - hugely creative and highly motivated,” said Andrea Wong, president, international production at SPT. “They already have an incredibly strong development slate.”

ITV Studios America and ITV Studios Global Entertainment inked an overall first look scripted television programming development, production and distribution agreement with Little Engine Productions and its co-founders Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo. ITV Studios America will be Little Engine’s studio partner on projects targeting U.S. television networks and streaming platforms, while ITV Studios Global Entertainment will focus on projects structured as co-productions with European television networks.

ITV America and Helga Eike (Toddlers & Tiaras) have launched Red Bandit Media, a new production company to be run by Eike, who will serve as president. Red Bandit will produce series across a range of unscripted styles and genres.

ADVERTISING

An eight-month study by K2 Intelligence found kickbacks and non-transparent media rebates to be “pervasive.” Released Tuesday by the Association of National Advertisers, the study revealed that “senior executives across the agency ecosystem were aware of, and mandated, some non-transparent business practices,” said the ANA. Those practices included cash rebates from media companies to agencies; rebates in the form of free media inventory credits; rebates under the cover of “service agreements” that were being used as cover for a rebate, and dual rate cards.

Publicis Groupe was among numerous companies critical of the ANA’s report, issuing a statement accusing the ANA of “failing its members, advertisers, agencies and the entire industry by releasing a report that relies on allegations about situations involving unnamed companies and individuals to make broad, unsubstantiated and unverifiable assertions. Despite repeated urging by Publicis Groupe and others in the industry to include names and sources in its report, the document hides behind suspicions and anonymity rather than encouraging real accountability.”

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Scripted comedy La Famiglia, produced by United Studios of Israel and distributed by Armoza Formats, has now been taken in two new territories. France’s Zodiak Fiction and Endemol Shine Chile have acquired the local rights to the series.

Boat Rocker Rights acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the Mountain Road Productions library, including 14 series and almost 200 hours of television. The agreement also includes a first look deal on new productions.
