Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 3, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, a new, regular column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Mia Goldwyn, Chief Content Officer of StyleHaul.

What was your first leadership position and what lessons did you learn from it?
When CBS and Viacom split, I moved to New York to help manage Paramount’s distribution relationship with the Viacom sister companies, and with CBS for international home video. I worked with some amazing people and learned the value of building relationships – throughout my career I have met and re-met people in so many different capacities and those relationships matter.

What’s the most important part of managing a staff?
Communication. The best managers I have worked for did an excellent job communicating their vision, strategy, successes and challenges. It creates shared goals, it’s motivating and, at times, inspirational. At the same time, good managers have to create a space for honest feedback and input from their staff across all levels.

Tell us about a difficult management problem and what you did to overcome it.
I answered this question very differently years ago when I was applying to business school. Today, the biggest challenge is managing the rapid pace of change. This is especially true for a start-up environment like the one at StyleHaul, where new ideas and opportunities that can change the direction of a company present themselves every day. It’s important to stay focused and also informed. I spend a few hours each day catching up on industry news – I love Twitter because it allows me to get a lot of information-in a very short timeframe.

What do you look for when interviewing job candidates?
I usually look at resumes from the bottom up, starting with a candidate’s interests and hobbies. By the time a resume lands on my desk, the candidate has usually been determined to be a good match for the basic job criteria. Hobbies and interests help me figure out if the candidate will be a good fit within the organizational culture, as well as give me a little bit of insight into who they are and what drives them. A "thank you" email after the interview is an absolute must. I may be old-fashioned but, in my experience, saying thank you goes a long way in everything you do.

Caroline Baumgard was named Chief Creative Officer at Banijay Group‘s new production division, Banijay Studios North Amercia. Baumgard had been USA EVP at Endemol.
