TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Yesterday, Fusion presented the international premiere of documentary Silent River exclusively on Snapchat Discover. Produced by Steve Fisher, the doc follows a woman as she tries to save one of the most contaminated rivers in Mexico. In addition, Fusion will release an in-depth report on Fusion.net that examines other factors related to the polluted river.

YouTube celeb Kian Lawley (16 million video views) and singer Bella Thorne (My Own Worst Enemy) joined AwesomenessTV and Film 360’s upcoming feature film Shovel Buddies. The film also stars Alex Neustaedter, Anton Starkman and James C. Burns; Simon Atkinson and Adam Townley (Indoor) will direct. Shovel Buddies is the second AwesomenessTV feature film, with Expelled starring Cameron Dallas as its first. It was the number one “social movie” on iTunes last year.

Amazon Studios appointed two entertainment-industry executives, Bob Berney and Albert Cheng, to its team. Cheng is the former Chief Product Officer of Digital Media at Disney ABC Television Group, and will take over as Amazon’s Chief Operating Officer. Berney previously served as CEO of Picturehouse, and will lead the movies’ distribution and marketing department.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Interactive One (iOne) revamped its flagship destinations yesterday, starting with women’s site Hello Beautiful. In coming months, re-launches will follow for men’s entertainment and pop culture pub TheUrbanDaily, millennial pop culture focused GlobalGrind and NewsOne. The redesign includes new native advertising and sponsored content opportunities along with premium immersive ad units, called iMpact.

Michelle Phan’s subscription beauty company Ipsy reported $150 million in revenue this year and plans to open a new arm called Open Studios. The brand will work with up-and-coming beauty creators and already participated in the latest Generation Beauty event that took place last weekend. Open Studios will allow creators to use studio space and equipment, attend coaching sessions with Phan, access conferences and networking events and join the Glam Bag program for free.

Red Bull TV announced its slate of programming which includes Jessie Ware: Remixed (June 1-7), Wingsuit Flight Over Indonesian Volcano (June 3) and Red Bull Hare Scramble (June 7). Programming is available at Redbull.tv and through its app on multiple devices.

Free movie and TV streaming service Popcornflix added four children’s series to its library. Content will include Disney Channel’s four seasons of Life with Derek, animated entry Dragon Booster, and preschool offerings St. Bear’s Doll Hospital and My Animal Family. The kid’s programming will also be available on the Popcornflix Kids app.

Technology company Cxense will acquire ad optimization firm Maxifier from Dentsu Digital Holding, Eurovestech, and Fieldhelm. Publishers such as Condé Nast, Forbes, The Atlantic, and classifieds publisher Leboncoin are all Maxifier clients.

Coming soon to Netflix: advertising? The streaming service known for its ad-free model is experimenting with the HBO standard of pitching its original programming to viewers. “It has not attempted to sell third party ads…for the moment, only specific users in specific markets are seeing the ads,” according to Vice’s Motherboard, who got official confirmation from Netflix. Last year, Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt said, “Internet TV is divorced from the need of advertising revenue because we can develop direct relationships with the consumer.”

Dish Network’s Sling TV hired Ben Weinberger as Senior Vice President and Chief Product Officer. Weinberger was previously CEO and co-founder of recommendations tech-firm Digitalsmiths, which was acquired by TiVo for $135 million last year.

Jay Rasulo, Chief Financial Officer of The Walt Disney Company, will leave his position at the end of the month. Rasulo was expected to exit once Tom Staggs was appointed to Chief Operating Officer. As Senior Executive Vice President and CFO, he led Disney’s multi-channel network Maker Studios.

Mary Perrella joined Boingo Media as Director Of Digital Sales for the Eastern United States. Perrella most recently served Clear Channel’s airport division, where she managed national accounts for leading brands including Verizon, Delta Air Lines, and Epson.

Independent agency Drumroll named Andy Davidhazy as Creative Director. He previously held the title of Chief Creative Officer at SpotMe, as well as gigs at Downstream, Ziba Design, Hornall Anderson Design Works and Babcock + Jenkins.
