Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 28, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.
TODAY’S TOP NEWS
It’s makeover time at Genius Brands International. The company continues its Baby Genius brand relaunch this week with the debut of fresh redesigns of Baby Genius signature characters from artist and self-described "professional doodler" Todd Goldman, founder of David & Goliath. The company also recently extended its agreement with Xfinity TV by Comcast; Baby Genius has amassed 50 million downloads over the past seven years. Select Baby Genius home entertainment titles are also currently available via Netflix. In April, GBI announced the introduction of a new online streaming service at http://babygenius.com, which features the entire Baby Genius content library. The library offers thousands of songs, including classic nursery rhymes, learning songs, seasonal classics and more. Other Baby Genius products, including books, toys and videos are available for purchase.
Buzz grew over Memorial Day weekend that children’s entertainment hothouse Kidz Bop may be on the block. According to a Billboard story the company, which recently released the 25th volume of the Kidz Bop CD series, is attracting suitors including Disney. Execs from Kidz Bop and Disney were not available for comment. To date, the imprint developed in 2001 by Razor & Tie co-founders Cliff Chenfeld and Craig Balsam, has sold 14.6 million albums in the States, plus 3.7 million download track sales. The brand also now counts a tour, book series and SiriusXM radio show among its empire. Other possible bidders mentioned in the article are Entertainment One; Canadian music publisher Ole, and several major record labels.
MEET ANIMATION INNOVATORS STEVE BORST & GARY DOODLES
It’s not all fun and games when you’re the show runners of a new hit series on Nickelodeon. Wait… it kind of is. Breadwinners creators/exec producers Steve Borst and Gary Doodles spill their recipe for staying creative and juggling a crazy schedule.
Inspiring minds
Breadwinners is a mix of lots of different inspirations from our lives and childhoods that we’ve thrown all together in a blender. Videogames, particularly old-school Lucas Arts games and Nintendo games, influenced various elements of the show, including a pixilation look we’ve given certain backgrounds. Classic toons like Ren & Stimpy and Animaniacs were a big inspiration for Gary and the visual aesthetic. Music is also a big inspiration. Gary was in a band with the composer of our show, so everything about our show is very musical. From a story perspective, Steve has drawn inspiration from the fantasy genre by incorporating fantastical creatures, magic, and lore. Action movies like Indiana Jones and Star Wars have also inspired Steve to incorporate a strong adventure element. An example of how our inspirations intersect is the use of the mine carts down in the bread mines. For Gary, the inspiration is Donkey Kong Country. For Steve, the inspiration is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Typical day at the "office"
On any given day, we’re working on multiple different episodes that are all at different stages of the production process. Each of us has our own area of expertise. Steve’s is story/scripts, and Gary’s is direction/art. So half the time we’re in the same meetings, and half the time we divide and conquer. We might start the day with a two-hour meeting with a director to review an animatic. After that, Gary might hop into a meeting to review designs, while Steve might work with his team of writers on an outline for another episode. Later we might hop into a voiceover record with our actors. We might finish the day with a meeting to present yet another episode’s animatic to the Nickelodeon network executives for their review. At around 7pm, we generally split off. Steve will generally work on punching up the first draft of a script till around midnight. Gary will work on punching up an animatic with our composer Tommy before it ships to our animation studio Titmouse. If your head is spinning after reading this, you’ve gotten a good sense of what our days are like.
Most fun, most challenging?
Collaboration is super fun and super crucial to our process–we’re constantly bouncing ideas off each other and quacking each other up. This back-and-forth collaboration, which we encourage across the entire crew, helps an idea grow and evolve through every stage of the process. The really great part about our partnership is that we both have similar sensibilities but different skill sets. The most challenging part of running a show for both of us is the schedule. At any given time, there are about 20 different cartoons at different stages of the process. And being perfectionists, there’s always something we want to be working on and improving. During the first season we were working on average seven days a week, 12-14 hours a day, in order to get the show to where we wanted it.
From YouTube short to full-fledged series
Breadwinners seemed to happen almost overnight for us. We made the short over the span of a couple months, put it online, and there was an instant positive response. Within a couple of months we were developing the show at Nickelodeon, and within six months moving into full production on the first season. But the reality is we both spent many, many years developing our skills and working our own projects. There’s no one right way to get your content discovered. But as a general philosophy, we believe you should just make it and put it out there. The technology is there. You can make animation from start to finish on your own without the tremendous resources it once required. And if you don’t have the skills to execute every stage of the process, you should collaborate with someone who can complement your skills.

Straight from the official Pixar website: "Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life." … Meanwhile, Disney is teasing Big Hero 6, the studio’s first animated theatrical release based on a Marvel Comics animated feature, with clips featuring robotics ingenue Hiro Hamada and his robot Baymax. The film is directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, and follows the two pals as they work to help save the futuristic city of San Fransokyo from a twisted criminal plot. The film is slated to premiere Nov. 7.
