IN THE NEWS

A handful of A-listers are on tap to stop by NBC’s new comedy variety show Maya & Marty, headlined by Maya Rudolph and Martin Short, for its premiere May 31 at 10p. Guests Miley Cyrus, Larry David, Jimmy Fallon and Tom Hanks will appear on the premiere episode of the show, exec-produced Lorne Michaels and produced by Matt Roberts, Erin David, Dave Becky and Marc Gurvitz, along with Rudolph and Short.

The curtain will rise on Cate Blanchett, Carole King, Nathan Lane, Audra McDonald, Patina Miller, Saoirse Ronan and Oprah Winfrey, who will join nominees Steve Martin and Edie Brickell (both of The Bright Star) as presenters for the 70th Tony Awards. The show is slated to air June 12 on CBS; James Corden will host the ceremony live at the Beacon Theater.

Lionsgate told analysts yesterday fans are “clamoring” for more seasons of the company’s drama Nashville, which ABC canceled after four seasons. That’s likely the reason the show’s final ABC airing on Wednesday night felt more like a cliffhanger than a finale. The company also said it is working on stories for a potential next season. The series signed off of the ABC airwaves with a 10-week high, drawing 4.2 million viewers.

As the Viacom turns… In the latest twist in the saga, CEO Philippe Dauman and board member George Abrams asked a Massachusetts court to hold the trial “no later than four months from now” to hear their plea to overturn Sumner Redstone’s effort to oust them from his family trust and the National Amusements board. The two are seeking a ruling that 93-year-old Redstone was not competent to make the decision last week to remove them from the trust and board.
