NBC‘s Brian Williams landed a big one: The NBC News anchor interviewed Edward Snowden for a primetime special airing Wednesday, May 28 at 10p. Williams was in Moscow this week to talk to the former National Security Agency contractor, in exile since leaking classified documents about U.S. surveillance programs, for his first U.S. television sit-down.

IN THE NEWS

Syfy snatched U.S. basic cable rights to all three seasons of Starz‘s Spartacus, along with prequel Gods of the Arena. "Our strategy of acquiring hit shows to complement our premium original scripted series has really resonated with our audience," said Chris Regina, programming SVP. Gladiator drama launches Thursday, June 26 at 10p.

Acknowledging the problems in its electronics operations, Sony Corp. CEO Kaz Hirai said Thursday that the company would increase its focus on its television production business. Pointing to the growing demand for content, Hirai said, "The strength of the big four networks, with their links to major studios, have been considerable, and some suggested that we suffered because of that. But the rise of the Internet has changed that. Not being linked to one of the networks will work to our advantage."

Primetime content available on demand jumped from 70 percent in the 2012-2013 season to 84 percent the following year – and the amount of time spent viewing surged 42 percent during that period, reported Rentrak execs at a presentation at Thursday’s On Demand Summit. "People have been anticipating when on demand would mature, and now it’s really here," said Rentrak’s Cathy Hetzel, corporate president.

RadicalMedia sent a letter asking Warner Bros. to change the name of upcoming ABC drama Forever, reports Deadline. The studio is developing its own drama, based on the 2003 Pete Hamill best-seller of the same name, also about an immortal man living in NYC. "This claim is baseless," responded Warner Bros. TV.

Everyone’s talking about Hispanic Millennials – and Michael Teicher, EVP, Media Sales for Twentieth Television, is one of the experts unearthing insights. What do marketers need to know to reach this coveted demo? "This group is on the pulse of pop culture, major consumers of media and while there are rituals and customs endemic to their culture, they are very assimilated," Teicher tells Cynopsis. For more, register for Cynopsis’s June 10 webinar, "How to Reach Hispanic Millennials."

Pivot‘s nightly 10p news program TakePart Live is launching a year-long, multi-platform campaign centered on younger veterans. Airing Thursdays, "Return the Service" will celebrate service men and women, while exploring the challenges they face returning home. "I’m incredibly proud of my father and brother who served our country," said co-host (and daughter of John) Meghan McCain. "This is a great opportunity to bring attention to our brave military personal and also shed light on serious issues facing them."

E! announced the launch of E! Now, making available live streaming of the net’s shows (including Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Chelsea Lately and Fashion Police) and red carpet events, as well as signature programming on VOD. Content can be accessed via E! Now on desktop and the new E! Now app, for iOS. An Android version of the  E! Now app is scheduled for release in mid June.

History has launched a campaign to honor the country’s servicemen and women through its "Mission to Honor" tribute gallery. Viewers can go to www.history.com/mission and the net’s social media platforms to submit stories and images of loved ones who have served or are serving.

E! signed Mara Menounos to a multi-year agreement that includes a producing role. The TV personality will host new entertainment news mag Untold with Maria Menounos and make appearances on Live from E! and various specials across platforms, and the net gets first look rights for projects at Menounos’s Underman/Omegagirl Productions. Menounos’s reality series, Chasing Maria Menounos, airs on sister net Oxygen.
