IN THE NEWS
Longtime 60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer died yesterday at age 84. Safer last week announced his retirement after 46 years on the newsmagazine, noting: “After more than 50 years of broadcasting on CBS News and 60 Minutes I have decided to retire. It’s been a wonderful run, but the time has come to say goodbye to all of my friends at CBS and the dozens of people who kept me on the air. Most of all I thank the millions of people who have been loyal to our broadcast.” CBS ran a career tribute to Safer last Sunday. “Morley was one of the most important journalists in any medium, ever,” said CBS chairman/CEO Leslie Moonves. “He broke ground in war reporting and made a name that will forever be synonymous with 60 Minutes. He was also a gentleman, a scholar, a great raconteur – all of those things and much more to generations of colleagues, his legion of friends, and his family, to whom all of us at CBS offer our sincerest condolences over the loss of one of CBS’ and journalism’s greatest treasures.” Noted, Jeff Fager, exec producer of 60 Minutes and a close friend of Safer’s, “Morley was a fixture, one of our pillars, and an inspiration in many ways. He was a master storyteller, a gentleman and a wonderful friend. We will miss him very much.”
Just days after the four FCC commissioners debated chairman Tom Wheeler’s proposed set-top reforms on stage at INTX, Wheeler said yesterday in an interview with analyst Craig Moffett that objections raised by Hollywood and the cable industry are “baloney.” He said, “It’s the end of the world because copyright is somehow being hurt. I’m ready to solve the problem. We don’t want copyright to be threatened. So let’s talk about how we solve those” issues.
CBS chief Les Moonves reiterated his stance that content owned or partially owned by the network gets better treatment. Speaking at the Needham Emerging Technology Conference, Moonves said the exploding syndication market has led to a climate where “having ownership is a huge, huge difference… A show that’s 100 percent owned by [CBS] will generally get a better time period and generally will be more important to the network.” Of the six new CBS shows for the fall, the network owns 100 of three of them, 50 percent of two, and 70 percent of one. CBS is not unique; ABC owns 10 of 11 new shows and Fox owns nine of 10. Moonves also called Netflix a “frenemy, but more friends than enemy.”
Liberty Media chairman John Malone told the crowd at a UJA event honoring him in NY Wednesday that the US needs to think globally for its business ventures. Interviewed by Charlie Rose at the event, Malone also said he doesn’t think streaming services like Netflix will be the end of the basic pay TV bundle. “The big bundle only breaks down if sports breaks down,” he said. “Because that’s the muscle…Sports is the glue that holds the bundle together and I don’t see that coming apart any time soon.” Malone also praised Comcast’s proposed purchase of DreamWorks Animation.
