IN THE NEWS

CBS has renewed freshman dramas Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Code Black, as well as comedy The Odd Couple and reality series Undercover Boss for new seasons. But it’s one and done for Rush Hour.

Up is going in a new direction. The net’s “We Get Family” tagline heralds new programming that veers a bit from its gospel/faith and family roots. Sandwiched between the former ABC Family and Hallmark, Up is aiming for the “Me to We” life stage – getting married, having children and raising kids. “Our extensive, 18-month research endeavor revealed that over 42 million adults are searching for family in mind programming. We believe this is a substantial opportunity and as the most trusted brand for family content, we are poised to own it,” said Amy Winter, EVP and GM, UPtv.

Viacom is hosting what it has dubbed a Datafront, today in NYC, to explore changes in the media business and its impact on consumers and marketers. “This is a watershed moment for television as data has redefined how we consider so many aspects of the business, from alternative currencies to measurement to branded entertainment," said Kern Schireson, EVP Data Strategy and Consumer Intelligence. Topics included the convergence of screens, measurement, brand content creation and how to authentically speak to fans.

PRODUCTION

PepsiCo’s in-house Creators League is opening of a new content studio in NYC, with plans to collaborate with AOL’s Partner Studios and Tip “T.I.” Harris. Creators League will serve as an internal production arm for branded content, brand-inspired long and short form scripted series and films, reality and competition, OTT and digital content. “Consumers are hungry for inventive, engaging content, delivered in a timely fashion and across a multitude of channels,”  said Brad Jakeman, president, PepsiCo Global Beverage Group. “Creators League will allow us to provide that content with maximum speed, efficiency and creative control.”

PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew launched the Mtn Dew Green Label Multi-Channel Network, the first brand-owned MCN, partnering with influencers who will create YouTube content across key verticals (action sports, hoops, art, music, gaming and racing). By eliminating the traditional third-party, the brand explains it eliminates the third-party management fee. The arrangement also provides a new revenue stream from ad sales revenue, and delivers a more authentic relationship to influencers. For their part, influencers get a long-term brand integration deal.

DISTRIBUTION

Cinedigm ’s faith and family Dove Channel has added new programming from Litton Entertainment. The three-week rollout begins Tuesday, May 17. Included in the distribution deal: Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown; Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin, an exploration of Earth’s least understood resource, our oceans; Born to Explore with Richard Wiese; Sea Rescue, focusing on the stories of marine animal rescue, rehabilitation, and return to the wild; and The Wildlife Docs, following the challenging lives of a veterinary staff that cares for over 12,000 animals.

Ride Television Network, Inc. (RIDE TV) and the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative reached an agreement to make RIDE TV available to NRTC members’ video subscribers.  RIDE TV debuted in the fall of 2014 and serves the equestrian lifestyle community.

UPFRONTS UPDATE

Why combine NBCUniversal’s broadcast and cable presentations? “We manage that company as one company,” said CEO Steve Burke at the company’s Upfront on Monday. “Hopefully this will come through during our two hours today.”

NBC, poised to finish first for the full 52-week September to September 2015-16 primetime season in A18-49, announced three new series, as well as a Thursday NFL package. “Coming off the Rio Olympics in August, we can’t wait to get the fall underway,” said Robert Greenblatt, chairman, NBC Entertainment. Drama highlights include This Is Us, from Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love), where seemingly disparate people’s lives intersect in the most curious ways; and Timeless, from Eric Kripke (Revolution) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield), focused a scientist, soldier and history professor who must change the past while trying to capture a dangerous fugitive.

Midseason dramas include Taken, which will air at 10p Mondays in the prime post-Voice timeslot, spin-off Chicago Justice, Emerald City, a reimagination of The Wizard of Oz, spin-off The Blacklist: Redemption, and Midnight, Texas, based on the hit book about the vampires, witches, psychics and hit men who inhabit this small town.

On the comedy side, this fall Emmy Award winner Mike Schur returns to NBC with The Good Place, starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson. One of the most anticipated shows of the new season is the return of The New Celebrity Apprentice, with Arnold Schwarzenegger taking control of the boardroom post-Donald Trump. Said Paul Telegdy, NBC Entertainment President of Alternative and Late Night Programming, “We can honestly say we’ve never been more excited about a new slate of alternative series than we are this year.” More on NBCUni cable tomorrow…

Fox has slated a midseason return for Prison Break. The six-episode event series reteams the cast and crew of the original series that aired from 2005 to 2009. The trailer presented at the net’s upfront presentation suggests that Wentworth Miller’s Michael Scofield, who was believed to be dead, isn’t. The series is slated for a Thursday 9p time slot when it launches, following Rosewood.

Fox TV Group chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman were optimistic when questioned about another installment of The X-Files event series. “We have had conversations with (creator) Chris Carter and David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. I believe everyone is on board to do another installment of the show,” said Walden. The series was the second-most-watched Fox program on VOD last season behind Empire.

24: Legacy, the latest reboot of the 24 franchise, will debut on Sunday, February 5  right after Fox’s broadcast of the Super Bowl. The series, which chronicles a race against the clock to stop a devastating terrorist attack on United States soil, is in signature real-time format, but in 12 episodes; half that of the original.

The net’s remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show is slated to air in October. The two-hour event follows Janet Weiss (Victoria Justice) and Brad Majors (Ryan McCartan), who stumble upon the bizarre abode of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Laverne Cox), a sexually ambiguous, flirtatious mad scientist.

Emphasizing the evolution of Univision Communications Inc.‘s broad array of complementary media brands and how they are being leveraged to create more meaningful buying opportunities for marketers, the company’s 2016 upfront presentation focused on the theme "United We Stand. Together We Grow." "Univision is evolving to be a media company of the future, with more catered programming and advanced offerings that better position us to reach a rapidly evolving consumer marketplace. The strength of our relationship with U.S. Hispanics has allowed us to expand our capabilities to account for more than language," said Randy Falco, president and CEO of Univision Communications. "Now, we not only serve one of the biggest growth populations in America, but also the nation’s next generation of growth consumers  the diverse American youth.…Simply put, we are taking steps to ensure UCI continues to be a powerful, innovative partner for marketers."

Between its controlling investment in The Onion, and an agreement with ABC to become the sole owner of Fusion, the Company is doubling down on comedy content across linear and digital. The new slate of sitcoms caters to a more youthful audience, including 40y20, which explores what happens when a divorced, 40-year-old dad and his 20-year-old son live together like bachelors, and Super X, which centers on how friends Lalo and Alex’s lives change when an accident leaves Alex with superpowers. UCI will also further leverage both Flama and Udisea through sponsored interstitials on Univision Network, UniMas and Galavision and, in 2017, The Onion will gain a linear home with the launch of a new show on Fusion.

Working with Televisa to reimagine telenovelas and make them more relevant to the evolving Hispanic consumer, UCI’s approach will be on shorter, crisper stories on Univision Network and a focus on fast-paced action series and real-life stories on UniMas. New shows slated for the season include, Mujeres De Negro, Tres Veces Ana, and El Principe, all of which will allow fans to consume content across multiple platforms in the UCI ecosystem.
