IN THE NEWS

Clear the decks: Ahead of Upfronts, broadcast nets burst the bubbles of series awaiting word on their fates. ABC’s The Muppets, Marvel’s Agent Carter, Galavant, Nashville, Hearbeat and Castle will not be back. In addition to cancelling CSI: Cyber after two seasons, CBS sent Supergirl flying to sib CW. Fox’s The Grinder, Grandfathered, Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Life, Minority Report and Second Chance join Bordertown in the cancellation heap, but Sleepy Hollow has been renewed for season four. Game of Silence goes quiet on NBC, along with Telenovela, Undateable, Mysteries of Laura and midseason comedy Crowded.

Acknowledging that the changing business of television motivates networks to give shows from their own studios preferential treatment, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said during a conference call on Sunday, “We certainly take into consideration ownership issues when we decide where a show goes on schedule. But at the end of the day, we are looking for the best shows to get the best places on the schedule.” As for the issue of stacking rights, allowing the net to stream all episodes of a show’s current season, Greenblatt said, “Stacking is important to us….It is the order of the day.”

MTV has stopped Faking It after three seasons. The low-rated comedy’s now-series finale airs Tuesday, May 17 at 10:30p.

Freeform canceled Recovery Road after one season. “im heartbroked it ends after ten amazing episodes,” tweeted writer Holly Sorensen of the drama about a teen girl dealing with addiction.
E!’s Live from the Red Carpet will livestream NBCUniversal’s Upfront red carpet at Radio City Music Hall this morning at 9:30a. Jason Kennedy and Maria Menounos will host the celeb parade.

In a move that a year ago we could have been more certain was a joke, ABC late night host Jimmy Kimmel threw his hat in the ring for Vice President of the U.S. During Thursday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel said he would build a wall – but on the Northern border, “to keep the Mexicans out of Canada.” Kimmel’s next stop: morning show Live! With Kelly and Not Michael, today.

Discovery Channel grabbed U.S. TV rights to Morgan Spurlock doc Rats, based on the Robert Sullivan best-seller about the history and habitats of the rodents. The film, co-produced by Warrior Poets & Submarine, will be finished in 4Q16. Um…what’s the appeal? “Morgan and his team have found a community of critters very few people have covered: Rats,” said John Hoffman, EVP, documentaries and apecials, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Science Channel. “Their creative vision on this project is something not to be missed.”

The cast and producers of History’s Roots head to D.C. tomorrow, May 17 for a White House screening and discussion of the miniseries reboot. Valerie Jarrett, assistant to the President and senior advisor, welcomes an audience of students and opinion leaders to talk about why now is a good time to reimagine the groundbreaking 1977 show. Roots premieres on History Monday, May 30 at 9p.

NBC sent Midnight, Texas to series, a supernatural drama from director Niels Arden Oplev (Mr. Robot) based on the hit book series, as well as spin-offs The Blacklist: Redemption and Chicago Justice, time travel series Timeless, family sitcom Marlon, starring Marlon Wayans, and Great News, exec produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. The Carmichael Show was renewed for season three, and while Cruel Intentions was not picked up to series, it’s still in play. “It goes under the heading of embarrassment of riches,” said Bob Greenblatt on Sunday. “There’s just so many shows that have scheduled or ordered…we like it, and we’re still discussing it.”

UPFRONT UPDATES

The theme of Screenvision Media’s Upfront event, held at NYC’s Skylight at Moynihan Station on May 12, was “Impact Like No Other.” The national cinema ad company announced the roll-out of its “Connected Cinema” experience  via alliances with MovieTickets.com, Timeplay, Shazam, EdisonX and Branded Entertainment Network, Screenvision Media promises to engage with consumers before, during and after their movie-going experience, starting at the point they search for a ticket. Brands will also be able to extend the reach of on-screen campaigns to the digital platforms of MovieTickets.com and Hollywood.com; MovieTickets.com will be able provide aggregate front-end insights by connecting moviegoers and specific movies to purchase behavior, as well as back-end analytics to elevate campaign success measurement.

An alliance with Timeplay will allow moviegoers to control and impact the action on the screen through their mobile device; brands will be able to integrate into Screenvision Media’s Front & Center preshow with interactive experiences such as branching video and multi-player gaming with leaderboards and prizes. The platform will be rolled out in 1,000 screens by January 2017.

Brands will also be able to integrate into 2017 blockbuster films themselves through an exclusive alliance with interactive platform Branded Entertainment Network. The relationship enables brands to find branded integration opportunities based on budget, demographic and other variables within Hollywood film and premium videos, and to integrate into films.

Screenvision Media will be working exclusively with Shazam on the creation of branded Shazam Sessions, segments aimed at giving brands the opportunity to align themselves with top musical artists for creation of on-screen content. And, of course, no Upfront event would be complete without a measurement mention: comScore has developed a product enabling Screenvision Media to better perform targeted programming for advertisers, and provide attribution regarding product purchases following moviegoing.

Ahead of mother ship NBCUniversal’s Upfront presentation at Radio City Music Hall tonight, Telemundo and NBC Universo announced a lineup of new programming for the 2016-2017 season that includes over 1100 hours of new formats and multiplatform content.

Telemundo’s new lineup features four Super Series, including El Chema, a spin-off of El Senor do los Cielos; Hugo Chavez, El Comandante, inspired by the life of the Latin American leader; season five of El Senor d los Cielos and a third installment of the Senora Acero franchise. A Sunday primetime programming block features a kids talent show, a wildlife show featuring exotic animals, two mini-series, and a celeb-filled late show hosted by Don Francisco.

Next month, the net launches “El Poder En Ti,” a company-wide community initiative aimed at empowering viewers in the areas of education, health, and finance. The multi-platform initiative is supported by a specialized website, digital tools and resources, and PSAs starring network talent, including Don Francisco as the narrative voice of the campaign.

NBC Universo’s lineup features The Riveras, a celeb-reality series following the family of the late Mexican music legend Jenni Rivera, Zapata Justice, an action-packed reality series set in a Texas border town, and the return of The Walking Dead for season three.

Noting a “tectonic change in Hispanic media,” Cesar Conde, chairman NBCUniversal International Group and NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, said, “The U.S. Hispanic market continues to be the biggest growth opportunity for any business. We are redefining Hispanic media by investing in the most innovative original content, a $250 million state-of-the-art facility and the best talent, in front of and behind the cameras.”

CASTING

Amanda Peet (The Good Wife) has joined the cast of IFC comedy Brockmire, starring and exec produced by Hank Azaria. Season premieres in 2017.

Jenna Fischer (The Office) is exiting upcoming CBS comedy Man With a Plan. Matt LeBlanc’s leading lady will be recast.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Trade association Cinema Advertising Council is merging operations with the Video Advertising Bureau, one year after the VAB was formed to unify the multiscreen TV business. “We realized that we and the VAB were promoting the same ideals – highly engaged audiences, appointment viewing, great content and national scale – and decided that we are stronger together as part of one larger Video Advertising Bureau,” said Katy Loria, president and chairman of the CAC.
