Good morning. It’s Friday, May 16, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Home is seemingly where the heart is, as WWE announced a multi-year renewal with NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment for WWE’s flagship series Monday Night RAW on USA Network and Friday Night Smackdown on Syfy. In addition, the deal will see E! – in partnership with WWE and Bunim-Murray Productions – continue to broadcast the reality series Total Divas.

"USA Network President Chris McCumber, Syfy President Dave Howe and I are incredibly pleased to renew this strategic partnership with WWE," said NBCUniversal Cable Chairman Bonnie Hammer. "In today’s TV landscape, live event programming is an extraordinarily valuable asset, and WWE remains the only entertainment franchise that consistently delivers this on a 52-week a year basis. We look forward to bringing WWE’s action-packed and unique brand of drama to the wide audiences across our cable networks for many years to come."

"We are proud to continue our long-standing partnership with NBCUniversal given their premiere position in the marketplace and vast promotional platforms," said WWE Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Vince McMahon. "We are excited about our future as we further the reach and popularity of our live, family-friendly entertainment programming 52 weeks a year."

ON THE AIR

Game 7 of the Canadiens/Bruins rivalry on Wednesday averaged 2.276 million viewers for NBCSN, marking the most-watched game featuring a Canadian team ever on the channel, excluding the Stanley Cup Final. It also ranked as the most-watched cable game of the 2014 playoffs so far; and the third-most watched second-round game ever on the network. On the digital front, the contest broke a slew of records to rank as best authentication-required NHL game ever  beating both authentication-required Stanley Cup Final games last year delivering 3.99 million minutes and 79,633 uniques. Meanwhile, Game 6 of Ducks/Kings delivered 1.036 million viewers, up 22% vs. the comparable game last year (Sharks-Kings).

Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig and the Major League Executive Council formed a succession committee to uncover the game’s next Commissioner with seven members who will oversee the succession process. The committee will be chaired by William O. (Bill) DeWitt, Jr., Principal Owner and Chief Executive Officer of the St. Louis Cardinals. The other members are Colorado Rockies Owner/Chairman & CEO Dick Monfort; Philadelphia Phillies General Partner, President & CEO David Montgomery; Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Owner Arte Moreno; Pittsburgh Pirates Chairman of the Board Bob Nutting; Minnesota Twins CEO Jim Pohlad; and Chicago White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. Selig is slated to retire upon the completion of his current term, which runs through January 24, 2015.

The NBA’s Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale of the Milwaukee Bucks to Wesley Edens and Marc Lasry. "We are pleased that Wes Edens and Marc Lasry have been approved as the new owners of the Milwaukee Bucks," said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in a statement. "The Bucks and their fans will benefit greatly from their vast business experience, energy and strong commitment to Milwaukee. I would like to thank Senator Kohl again for his unprecedented and historic financial gift toward the construction of a new Milwaukee arena and for his outstanding service to the league and his community over his nearly 30-year tenure."

The Cynopsis tradition continues. Our friends at HRTV have once again delivered Preakness picks from a trio of HRTV on-air talent. The 139th Preakness Stakes will air Saturday at 4:30p on NBC.

The WNBA has its TV schedule. The regular-season begins on ESPN networks on Saturday on ESPN2 with the Sky/Liberty. This year’s 20-game slate includes six doubleheaders, with five airing on Tuesday evenings in July. The Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star Game 2014 will be shown on Saturday, July 19 on ESPN at 3:30p. Ryan Ruocco returns for play-by-play along with analyst Rebecca Lobo and reporter Holly Rose. Meanwhile, Pam Warn teams with analyst Carolyn Peck.

Around the dial, NBA TV tips off its 2014 WNBA coverage tonight with a doubleheader featuring the San Antonio Silver Stars facing the Atlanta Dream at 7:30p, followed by the Sparks/Storm at 10p. The network will preview the regular season Thursday, May 15, at 8p, with host Kristen Ledlow and analyst LaChina Robinson.

HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel returns on Tuesday at 10p with a look at the billions being spent in Brazil on World Cup and Olympic venues profiles of ring announcers Michael and Bruce Buffer, and an examination of recent racism incidents in European soccer.

CBS carries the third and final rounds of the HP Byron Nelson Championship this weekend from 3-6p on both days. David Feherty will man the 18th tower on Saturday and Bill Macatee on Sunday alongside lead analyst Sir Nick Faldo. Ian Baker-Finch calls the action at the 17th hole and Peter Kostis at the 16th hole.

The Pac-12 Conference found a home for its annual football championship game for the next three years, with Commissioner Larry Scott announcing that Levi’s Stadium will play host to the matchup. The first game will take place on Dec. 5, and follows three years of the game taking place at the home stadium of one of its participants.

Turner analyst Steve Kerr’s departure into coaching the Warriors will reportedly happen following the end of the company’s postseason coverage after the Western Conference Finals. "Steve has been one of the premier analysts in all of sports during his tenure with Turner," the company said in a statement. "We thank him and wish Steve the best as he takes on this new professional challenge with the Golden State Warriors."

The Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago’s WGN-TV entered a three-year rights extension that keeps the team on the channel through the conclusion of the 2018-19 NHL season. The deal will see WGN-TV broadcast 20 regular-season games each year. "WGN-TV is synonymous with Chicago and is the perfect partner to continue to help serve our expanding fan base," said Blackhawks President & CEO, John McDonough. "From Lloyd Pettit to Pat Foley, WGN-TV has been a highly-valued member of the Blackhawks family."

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

NASCAR is taking speed to the next level. Warner Bros. Consumer Products, in conjunction with DC Entertainment, is joining Team Hendrick, locking in a three-year deal with Hendrick Motorsports that will allow the team and its partners to develop consumer promotions and original content to "engage youth, drive fan excitement and energize licensed merchandise initiatives." The agreement will see WBCP and DCE build on- and off-track programs teaming star drivers Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. with the likes of Batman, Superman, The Flash and Green Lantern.

Minor League Baseball inked a national sponsorship agreement with automotive service chain The Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack. Promotional elements will focus on Pep Boys’ "Trust the Boys to get you there" theme, will be activated in targeted MiLB markets and clubs across the country this season with opportunities for league-wide expansion in future years.

New Era, in its first year as a NASCAR licensee, will shift from retail to the racetrack for the 2014 Sprint Showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday. The apparel company will have its logo on the side panel of AJ Allmendinger’s #47 Chevrolet as the driver attempts to clinch one of two available spots in Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

The Legacy Agency has launched a partnership with Australia’s Nine Live to promote NHL GameCenter LIVE, the National Hockey League’s live streaming game service, in the country. "We have seen how Australia has embraced other North American sports staples like baseball and the NFL, and know that hockey as a TV property is prime for growth and are glad to be the facilitator of this new deal," said Mike McCarthy, TLA Head of Media Consulting.

SOCIAL MEDIA

NBC’s coverage of the Preakness this weekend will incorporate on-air integration of live tweets from celebrities, horse racing experts and @NBCSN. The company will also feature a trending bar on its live coverage.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

FOX Sports and The Associated Press have sold sports data company, STATS LLC, to Vista Equity Partners, a leading San Francisco-based private equity firm. FOX Sports brought in AP as an equal partner in STATS in 2005. Both AP and FOX Sports will continue their usual business relationship with STATS after the sale. AP customers will not be affected by the sale.

LiveU laid out technology and service support plans for customers at the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. Over 200 LiveU units will be deployed in the 12 host cities across Brazil by media companies from over 30 countries. Units will offer live video transmission, as well as hot spot connectivity via the LiveU DataBridge solution. The company will also provide onsite support at all the main venues in Brazil both directly and through its local partner, UCAN Digital Transmission.
