Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 14, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

More of a good thing: Based on early success of its new free AT&T U-Verse app, BabyFirst is planning a line of interactive apps optimized for use while the child is watching its linear channel. Sharon Rechter, BabyFirst EVP, business development, says the app, which enables kids to create images using an iPhone or iPad that can appear on-screen for U-Verse subscribers tuned to the BabyFirst network, takes the company’s passion for helping parents interact with their young children "to the next level… This is a new frontier, and we’re looking at developing a whole line of apps," Rechter tells CynKids. "We have the ability to change TV viewing from a passive experience to an active experience, and to personalize it for each child." Given that BabyFirst owns all of its IP, the possibilities are endless, she says. "The next app could be completely different." Although the new interactive app is exclusive to AT&T U-Verse, Rechter says she’s already in discussions with "most of the big operators to create unique apps" for each of them. The BabyFirst TV network is available in U-Verse’s U-family and U300 packages and above.

It just keeps getting better. Manuel Torres, Nickelodeon’s SVP, Global Toys and Publishing, has joined our CynKids webinar The New Lessons of Licensing: How to Maximize Tune In, Brand Engagement & Revenue. Join us Thursday, May 29, 1:30-3 ET. Torres joins speakers Marty Brochstein, SVP, Industry Relations & Information, International Licensing Industry Merchandisers Assn. (LIMA); Kirk Bloomgarden, SVP, Global Consumer Products, Saban Brands; Gregory G. Economos, SVP, Global Consumer Products at Sony; and Erin Dippold, VP, Consumer Products, DHX Media. MEET ANIMATION INNOVATOR CORT LANE

Aside from the obvious-his totally super heroic name-Animation Innovator Cort Lane was born to be in the business. Marvel’s VP, animation development and partnerships, was an early comics enthusiast and gets to live his dream daily as a supervisor on series including Marvel Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble and Marvel’s Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., all airing on Disney XD. Cort shares some insights with CynKids about…

Spidey season three
The third season is incredibly innovative in terms of format and animation technique, and it’s incredibly flexible from a programming and promotional standpoint. Spiderman starts the season by doing the Avengers-there will be two huge episode crossovers with Avengers. There are a lot of elements.

More Marvel-Disney Channel crossover?
I hope so. Phineas and Ferb was such a fun project to work on. They invited me to all the recording sessions and I got to weigh in with my two cents. That was a real highlight of my year last year.

Ch-ch-changes
Viewing patterns have changed so much with kids, and we are all trying to get our arms around them. They’re watching on an apps basis, they’re DVRing, they’re watching on SVOD. How does that affect how we structure a season? We have to reach kids in all these different viewing platforms. It creates creative challenges, but also huge opportunities to do different kinds of arcs.

His wish list
For me it’s less about projects and more about the character stories I want to tell. There are a few characters that we haven’t mined yet so I’m always trying to get them to be part of our series. One thing I’m proud of is that in Ultimate Spider-Man we created a strong female character–White Tiger. One of my personal challenges is developing female heroes in shows that boys can get into, and dispel the myth that boys don’t like female characters.

What will be different about his job in 5 years
My job changes so much from year to year on the basis of Marvel’s needs to explore character and story across all kinds of experiences. Now I find myself working on things like the Marvel Cruise experience, and voice recordings for the Marvel live show. I think there will be more of that, but I can’t even project what those projects will be. I just need to be incredible flexible. I’m constantly getting out of my comfort zone to explore something new.

(CynKids will be running Q&As with each of our Animation Innovators every week leading up to the !magination Awards.)

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Sprout’s newest animated series, Lily’s Driftwood Bay, premiered this week during The Sunny Side Up Show live daily morning show. The show engages highlights key environmental topics, with a strong emphasis on recycling, re-purposing and preservation, through the adventures of a 5-year-old girl. Voice cast included Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones) and Stephen Fry (The Hobbit, Alice in Wonderland). The series showcases different themes by using items that have washed up on the beach such as plastics, pottery, driftwood, glass and more, which help tell the story; its animation is made from 10,000 original real-life items found on beaches. Producer is Sixteen South, and Henson Independent Properties is the distributor.

Last night’s edition of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee covered another important topic: "The Politics of Peer Pressure." The episode, which premiered at 8p, explores the power of peer pressure and its negative and positive effects. Nick News, produced by Lucky Duck Productions, is now in its 23rd year and is the longest-running kids’ news show in television history.

APPS & GAMES

Time for a new app! Cupcake Digital and Zodiak Kids are releasing a new addition to the Tickety Toc line, Tickety Toc: Card Maker Time! The second app based on the preschool series enables fans to create and send Tick Tocktastic "postcard-style" messages and greeting cards to family and friends. The app is available in the App Store, Amazon Appstore, Google Play and for Nook, Nabi and Tabeo devices.

Oceanhouse Media tomorrow will release its very first "board book" app, based on the Little Critter books by Mercer Mayer. Little Critter ABCs is designed to help kids 2-5 to learn the alphabet through engaging illustrations and easy-to-read pages. It also comes with a record-and-share feature allowing youngsters to record themselves practicing their ABCs. Little Critter ABCs is the first in a four-part, iOS-exclusive series, with each app teaching a different subject including: Numbers, Colors and Shapes.

LICENSING

Pups-to-the-rescue series Paw Patrol is headed to Toys R Us beginning Sunday, May 18, with a line including plush, vehicles and figures that’s exclusive to the retailer through June. Developed by Spin Master Ltd., the series airs weekdays at noon on Nickelodeon and follows a pack of six heroic puppies led by a tech-savvy 10-year-old boy. "We worked closely with our partners at Spin Master to be the first retailer to bring this highly coveted line of toys to children who can’t wait to experience all the excitement and adventures from the show during playtime," said Jamie Uitdenhowen, VP/General Merchandising Manager at Toys R Us, U.S.

INTEGRATIONS & PROMOTIONS

Tree Fu Tom is headed for the resort life. FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment and travel operator Thomas Cook are in a new deal that sees the superhero of the self-titled series, which airs on Sprout in the US and CBeebies in the UK, premiering at 51 Thomas Cook resorts this summer. Secured in conjunction with agency Play 7, the promotion started this month and will continue until September. The initiative is expected to reach 80,000 UK kids and families vacationing with Thomas Cook. The resorts’ Kids’ Clubs will run special two-hour Tree Fu Tom themed sessions, where kids receive activity booklets and be able to play with selected Tree Fu Tom-themed products.
