Hours before ABC‘s Upfront, after the net had released its fall schedule, ABC president Paul Lee found himself explaining to reporters on a call that moving Grey’s Anatomy to 8p on Thursday next season

, is "not an issue," despite the drama’s steamy content. "I think that’s much less relevant than it was five years ago," said Lee. Scandal is sliding down to Grey’s spot at 9p to make room for new Shonda Rimes legal thriller How to Get Away with Murder.

IN THE NEWS

More on ABC’s lineup: Monday’s Dancing with the Stars/Castle combo on ABC will stay intact for fall, and Sunday’s only tweak is the addition of midseason drama Resurrection at 9p. Tuesday, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. moves to 9p, after new comedies Selfie and Manhattan Love Story. Drama Forever takes up the 10p hour. Another Marvel series, Marvel’s Agent Carter, will take S.H.I.E.L.D.’s place after its fall run. On Wednesday, The Goldbergs gets sandwiched between The Middle at 8p and Modern Family at 9p, with Black-ish landing at 9:30p.

A&E‘s Big Smo launches Wednesday, June 11 at 10:30p. The Brownstone Entertainment production follows country rapper Big Smo’s road to an album debut.

Investigation Discovery missing persons show Last Seen Alive debuts Sunday, June 1 at 9p. The six-episode series follows families chasing leads about missing relatives. "Last Seen Alive affords ID the rare opportunity to make a profound impact on recent missing-persons investigations, using our national platforms on air and online to bring much-needed attention to ongoing cases," said Kevin Bennett, GM of ID.

Science Channel‘s Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman returns for season five on Wednesday, June 4 at 10p. First hot-button topic: Is poverty genetic?

TV One celebrates Black Music Month with tune-centric programming in June, including the network premieres of biographical special Aretha: Frankly Speaking and HelloBeautiful Interludes Live: Trey Songz on Saturday, June 21 at 8p and 10p.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Shonda Rhimes signed a four-year extension on her deal with ABC Studios/Disney. Starting next season, the super-producer will have the net’s Thursday prime time all to herself.

AT THE UPFRONTS

ABC‘s big pitch to advertisers at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall: Disney and its properties offer a "brand halo." "When you bring them all together they are as unstoppable a force as The Force," said Disney-ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney.

Sweeney also talked up the company’s WATCH ABC app, and "a more integrated, immersive, personalized experience," saying, "When you invest in ABC you get our innovation and passion for technology." Sweeney next introduced Ben Sherwood. "I can’t wait to see you on this stage next year. Don’t forget I’m still a shareholder," she told her successor.

Cast members of ABC’s new series were onstage to help pump up enthusiasm for upcoming shows – comedy Black-ish got an especially strong response. But the audience has come to expect Jimmy Kimmel to bring the big laughs, and the late night host didn’t disappoint with a routine that took no prisoners. Kimmel joked that with all ABC’s shows about superheroes and fairy tales, "We may be a terrible network but we’re a great birthday party for a six-year-old." At the end of the presentation, stars from ABC shows emerged, and Modern Family‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet brought out a cake reminding everyone about their characters’ upcoming wedding.

Discovery U.S. Hispanic Networks had big news to share at NYC’s Stage 37: enhanced theme nights, a new reality show… and a little magic. GM Ivan Bargueiras promised "surprising stories and edgy characters."

As part of Discovery en Espanol‘s successful "Motor Mondays," the net announced the additions of Cromo Clandestino (Chrome Underground), the recently developed docu-realities Texas Trocas and Taller de Vaca. The premiere of Al Limite (Tethered) and Salvate si puedes (Survive That) give the human adventure genre a new twist, and to address viewers’ interest in natural history, the channel announced series Islas mortales con Dave Salmoni (Mystery of the Lost Island) and Sobrevivir (Survival). Bringing magic to Enigma thematic night: Mago Pop, with a young magician using all the tricks up his sleeve to meet a pop icon.

The focus of Latina-oriented Discovery Familia is topics that affect women’s lives, from health, in new series such as Soy Muy Joven Para Esto (I Don’t Have Time for This), about young women facing breast cancer, to beauty programs like Volver a Empezar (Starting Over), showing the makeovers of eight women carving new career paths. Added to parenting programming will be 13-part series Sobreprotegidos (World’s Worst Mom), dedicated to "diffusing parental paranoia."

A capacity crowd was on hand at NYC’s Hudson Hotel Rooftop Terrace to take in the spectacular view, dine, dance and, in between, hear about Estrella TV’s fall season programming slate. Calling the evening "electric," Judy Kenny, EVP, network sales told Cynopsis the net is thrilled with the response their programming is getting. "The pulse at this company is amazing," said Kenny. "These new shows are going to send us to a new level."

The shows in question include Rica, Famosa, Latina, following the lives of five successful Latinas, a la "Real Housewives"; miniseries Chalino: El Corrido de un Valiente, chronicling the rise of "godfather of regional Mexican music" Chalino Sanchez, and awards show Premios El Don, covering the same broad swath of films the Academy Awards do, but honoring Hispanics within those movies – and, of course, great dresses in a red carpet extravaganza.

Estrella TV is also launching a three-hour live daily morning show, Buenos Dias Familia ("new, fresh and funny," said Kenny), and said it is growing its sports franchise with the addition of Mexico’s Primera Division soccer.

But mostly, the night was about having fun. "We make it a year long conversation," said Kenny. "This was a party!"

There was plenty of buzz at the Univision Communications‘ Upfront, as the company touted its 11 cable channels, including Fusion (with partner Disney) and El Rey, new programming and digital series. The company had already released its programming slate, but there was still a surprise for advertisers: Simon Cowell, on hand to announce the talent show he’s launching on the net in 2015. La Banda will scour Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico to find members of a boy band; winners land a contract with Sony Music Latin and Syco Music. "There was only one destination, and that was Univision," Cowell told crowd.

The message from Univision to advertisers: "You won’t sell your stuff if you don’t speak the language," said EVP ad sales Steve Mandala.

CASTING

CBS‘s Matthew Perry comedy, The Odd Couple is recasting two roles. Georgia King (The New Normal) and Sarah Baker (Go On) will not move forward with the reboot.

Marin Ireland (Homeland) will recur on season four of HBO‘s Girls, premiering in 2015.

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

Comcast and Turner inked a deal to add complete current and previous seasons of shows on Turner networks, including TNT, TBS, CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and truTV to Comcast’s Xfinity on-demand service. Turner will insert dynamic ads in Xfinity On Demand programming on TV, computers, tablets and smartphones via TV Everywhere experiences. "VOD is a great way to help grow our audience and introduce new viewers to our programming and it also serves as another opportunity for advertisers with their targeted brand messages," said David Levy, president of Turner Broadcasting System.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Honeywell‘s Wi-fi thermostat campaign starring Mad Men‘s John Slattery has moved from digital to TV, with spots from agency mono placed in late night programming like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live. Why late night? The goal of the campaign is to "position Honeywell as an innovative leader in this category," Julie Vessel, group account director, mono, tells Cynopsis, "and that means a mix of cable, digital and late night network in order to reach an early adopter audience."

During ABC’s Upfront, president of ad sales Geri Wang announced a programmatic digital video test, leveraging tools being introduced by ad monetization platform FreeWheel. The summer trial will include digital video ad inventory, not linear TV inventory; participants will be limited to clients who commit to spend levels in advance over a defined period of time.
