AMC sister nets BBC America, IFC, SundanceTV and WE tv will skip regularly scheduled programming during the Mad Men series finale Sunday, May 17 at 10p, to air a special message commemorating the series. Leading up to the closer, AMC will air a marathon of all seven seasons in consecutive order beginning on Wednesday, May 13at 6p.
IN THE NEWS
The American Civil Liberties Union is requesting an investigation into gender inequality “at all levels of the film and television industry” in the hiring of women directors. “Women directors aren’t working on an even playing field and aren’t getting a fair opportunity to succeed,” said Melissa Goodman, director of the L.G.B.T., Gender and Reproductive Justice Project at the A.C.L.U. of Southern California. “Hollywood doesn’t get this free pass when it comes to civil rights and gender discrimination.”
Turner Broadcasting and Live Nation Entertainment are teaming for the Live Nation Music Awards, to be simulcast on TNT and TBS. Show celebrates live musical performances in categories like “Best On-Stage Collaboration,” “Best Special Effects in a Festival” and “Road Warrior of the Year.” Live Nation will produce in collaboration with IMG and Dick Clark Productions. Air date: October 1.
ABC anthology drama American Crime will bring some of the actors from season one back for season two in a different plotline, a la FX’s American Horror Story. “It’s a completely different scenario. Different crime,” said ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee in a conference call Tuesday. Season one centered on the murder of a war veteran.
At a private meeting with network owned and affiliate stations, NBC News chairman Andrew Lack said a decision on the fate of suspended anchor Brian Williams will come “soon,” according to the Daily Beast. Williams is four months into a six-month suspension as the network investigates possible incidences of misreporting.
USA gave a series pickup to Queen of the South. The one-hour drug trade drama, based on best-seller “La Reina Del Sur,” comes from Fox Television Studios and Universal Cable Productions. Premiere is slated for 2016.
Stana Katic will be back on Castle for season eight. The procedural had been renewed by ABC with Nathan Fillion onboard, but Katic hadn’t finalized a deal. Does the fact that Katic only signed on for one year signal the end is nigh? Not any more than McDreamy’s death bodes ill for Grey’s Anatomy, according to ABC president Paul Lee, who said in a conference call on Tuesday, “I would like to see them run for many, many years to come. They’re both powerful, vibrant brands with incredibly passionate audiences.”

SNL alum Taran Killam, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Moynihan and Kenan Thompson have joined the voice cast of PBS Kids series Nature Cat, about a housebound feline who dreams of outdoor adventure. Animated series slated for a November 25 premiere.
AT THE UPRONTS
Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen and CEOs, Fox Television Group, unveiled the Fox slate at NYC’s Beacon Theatre Monday night. “Building on the phenomenal momentum created by Gotham, The Last Man on Earth and, of course, Empire, we’re infusing next season’s schedule with new ambitious dramas, smart comedies, aspirational unscripted series and big live events and specials – all from the best creators in the business,” said Walden and Newman. “And our strategy with these bold creative swings is simple: schedule them strategically, market them relentlessly and create events that break through and captivate viewers across every platform.”
All-new Tuesdays include Grandfathered, starring John Stamos and The Grinder, with Rob Lowe, followed by comedy-horror series Scream Queens, from Glee’s Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.
Two new dramas, futuristic Minority Report, based on the Steven Spielberg blockbuster and the first of his films to be adapted for television, and Rosewood, from exec producer Todd Harthan (Psych), also debut this fall.
Event series The X-Files launches with a two-night event beginning Sunday, Jan. 24 at 10p, following the NFC Championship Game, and continuing with its time period premiere on Monday, Jan. 25 at 8p.
Joining the lineup in 2016: DC comics drama Lucifer, modern gothic action series The Frankenstein Code, from exec producer/writer Rand Ravich (Life) and exec producer Howard Gordon (Homeland) and two comedies, The Guide to Surviving Life and animated Bordertown, from Family Guy’s Mark Hentemann and Seth MacFarlane.
The 15th and final season of American Idol launches in January, and New Girl returns to the Tuesday comedy block in January with a season of uninterrupted episodes. Three-hour Grease: Live, starring Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages) and Vanessa Hudgens (Spring Breakers), airs live (of course) on Sunday, January 31.
The highlight of Univision’s Upfront on Tuesday was Fusion anchor Alicia Mendez’ 15-minute interview with former president Bill Clinton. “This is not rocket science,” said Clinton of the buying power of the Hispanic market. “If I were an advertiser I’d study the demographic patterns.” Clinton took advantage of the occasion to call for giving immigrants a clear path to citizenship.
The return of La Banda for a second season also made a splash at the Univision Upfront. This year, the music-based, multi-media competition show developed by Simon Cowell’s SYCO Entertainment and Saban Brands and co-produced with FremantleMedia Latin America will be looking for the next girl super group.
ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood told Tuesday’s Upfront crowd that while the net has the “most loved, most talked-about, most social” shows, they’re determined to do even better with “modern, new and smarter” ways of reaching buyers. “We’re committed to winning, in every sense,” said Sherwood.
When it comes to programming, that means not a lot of tinkering with a stable lineup. Every returning show stays in place in fact, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday remain intact. New series The Muppets and Quantico land on Tuesday at 8p and 10p, respectively; Dr. Ken takes up 8:30p on Thursday, and drama Oil and Of Kings and Prophets replace Resurrection and Revenge on Sunday at 9p and 10p. The Catch takes over for Shondaland sister How to Get Away With Murder on Thursdays at 10p at the close of Murder’s 15-ep season; after The Muppets’ limited run, Fresh Off the Boat slips from 8:30p to reclaim its 8p spot on Tuesday, and lead into new comedy The O’Neals. On deck: crime anthology Wicked City, comedy Uncle Buck, season two of American Crime and thriller The Family.
Galavant bridges the two half-seasons of Once Upon a Time, as Marvel’s Agent Carter will again land between fall and spring seasons of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The strategy avoids airing too many reruns, which “just didn’t reflect the way we are watching television,” said ABC prez Paul Lee.

TURN IT UP with truTV
FOUR OF THE REASONS truTV IS BETTER THAN EVER
BILLY ON THE STREET: Billy Eichner is here. We got him and no one is safe.
FRIENDS OF THE PEOPLE: They make us laugh, but you are under no obligation.
THOSE WHO CAN’T: High school is about to get fun…for the teachers (our first scripted original).
IMPRACTICAL JOKERS: Best friends are the worst.
TURN UP your buy with Turner and truTV
The New truTV: All New Line-Up. WAY MORE FUN.
FUN OF YOUR BUSINESS
Last week we asked truTV talent, "What’s your most embarrassing real life blunder on set?" and here’s what some of them had to say…
"Flexing my poorly defined muscles on my near naked, oil-slicked body in front of my childhood crush Danica McKellar (Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years) ranks up there as the most embarrassing thing I’ve done on Impractical Jokers to date. Side note – Danica looks fabulous!" James "Murr" Murray, Impractical Jokers
"I was duped by Kevin Barnett and our show runner, Neil Punsalan, to do my pathetic attempt at the running man dance while they were secretly filming me, and then they put it on television." Josh Rabinowitz, Friends of the People
"I often mess up on Hack My Life. I’ve failed to open bottles with every object imaginable; from a piece of paper to a high-heel, success often escapes me. As far as embarrassing goes? I suppose converting a pickup-truck-bed into a swimming pool: the water was freezing cold, everyone was shivering and I could barely form a sentence. I leapt out of that thing with a quickness." Kevin Pereira, Hack My Life
"Getting rammed with a bubble ball by Jermaine and seeing death flash before my eyes." Jennifer Bartels, Friends of the People
"We were shooting promos and I was goofing around with the director, who was a friend of mine. I threw a piece of paper at him and it curved and nailed a PA directly in her eyeball. Directly. It was her first day on set. I felt like the world’s biggest jackass. Still makes me cringe." Brian Quinn, Impractical Jokers
From a favorite pillow to a model airplane, we want to know: "What are three fun things you have in your office or bring with you on set?" Join the fun and see how you stack up against our readers. Please send your responses to FOYB.Cynopsis@gmail.com. Answers to this question will be published in our May 20th eNewsletter.
FUN OF YOUR BUSINESS is brought to you by the inquiring minds at
truTV, where everything is WAY MORE FUN
