IN THE NEWS

ESPN settled its breach of contract lawsuit against Verizon, filed last April when the Verizon’s FiOS service began to offer a skinny bundle of pay TV nets that didn’t include ESPN. The companies aren’t disclosing settlement terms of the case, filed at New York State’s Supreme Court.

After a 12-year tenure at the network, Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless is stepping down. Ganeless, who had a 25-year run at Viacom, is being replaced by Kent Alterman, currently president of original programming. “Michele has decided to step away from her role as President of Comedy Central. During her long and successful tenure the network has grown into a true multiplatform powerhouse,” said Doug Herzog, president of Viacom Media Networks Music & Entertainment Group. “Her strong and strategic leadership have helped build Comedy Central into one of the most admired and culturally relevant brands across the entire media and content spectrum.” The move follows ratings declines for Comedy Central, which has had to transition its late-night roster after the one-two departures of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Bob Iger does not “currently” have plans to extend his contract beyond its June 2018 expiration date, the Disney CEO said during an analysts call yesterday. The company’s expected succession plan hit a bump after the resignation last month of presumed heir apparent, COO Thomas Staggs. The Disney board, which has twice before persuaded Iger to extend his contract, is “very actively engaged in the succession process,” said Iger.
