JULY 8th

A+E NETWORKS

Unique Brands.  Captivating Content.

The CW is cleaning house, cutting Tomorrow People, Star-Crossed and Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries. Coming back: The 100, Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast.

IN THE NEWS

Fox cleared the deck, too, amidst a flurry of series orders, canceling three first-year comedies, Dads, Surviving Jack and Enlisted, as well as drama Rake. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the lone freshman comedy standing.

ABC News announced its "Fun in the Sun" lineup of live Good Morning America concerts. Acts performing for the morning show from Central Park start with Lady Antebellum on Friday, May 23 and end with Brad Paisley on Friday, August 29 – for everyone in between, go here.

At the earnings call for AMC Networks, COO Ed Carroll said despite soft ratings for newcomer Turn – 1.4 million viewers and .36 A18-49 on April 20 – net execs "like what we’re seeing so far… it’s a feel thing." The Revolutionary War drama will appear on Netflix, added Carroll, but not "for a while."

FYI has a partner in Pinterest. New series We’re Moving In (wt) will integrate creative direction from the visual discovery tool, as couples and families blend styles. "Pinners are incredibly diverse and share their passions across multiple interests which are reflected in FYI’s programming," said Jana Bennett, president of FYI and LMN.

Ahead of its Upfront event Monday, May 12, NUVOtv unveiled a new programming concept: Nu America. The franchise will feature series that combine topical storytelling with social commentary. NUVO also announced upcoming shows, including documentary immigration series Los Jets and reality competition Sensation, both from Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions.

Chase Carey, president and COO of 21st Century Fox, said despite the promotion in March of James Murdoch to co-COO, he’s not going anywhere. "Rupert [Murdoch] and I have an understanding in a new agreement," Carey told reporters in an earnings call. "We simply have not gotten it on paper yet."

Amy Paffrath (Last Night On TV) will host VH1‘s Dating Naked. The reality series from Lighthearted Entertainment bows Thursday, July 17 at 9p.

Showtime‘s Years of Living Dangerously is moving to Monday nights at 8p, starting May 12. The celeb-filled documentary event series explores human impact on climate change.

American Idol announced audition cities and dates for season 14. Hopefuls can collect in Minneapolis on June 18, New Orleans on June 25, Uniondale, NY on July 23, Nashville on July 30 and San Francisco on September 29, or skip the lines and submit auditions online at www.americanidol.com. Season 13 is winding up Tuesdays at 8p and Thursdays at 9p.

Whoopi Goldberg‘s One Ho Production and 44 Blue are partnering for a docu-series following Goldberg’s daughter, Alex Martin, and her extended family. "To say that Alex has a gift for frankness is an understatement," said co-founder and EVP of 44 Blue Stephanie Drachovitch. "She clearly comes by it honestly."

Discovery Communications and Liberty Global announced a pact to form a 50-50 joint venture to acquire international producer and distributor All3Media. "This venture allows us to work closely with Liberty Global, a valued partner and the largest international cable company, in managing a financially strong, innovative and creatively prolific production company," said David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery Comm.

Sony Pictures Television and Televisa will co-produce Senorita Polvara, about a beauty queen who falls in love with a hitman. It’s the first series announced under a multiyear deal the companies announced this week.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Automated ad-buying technologies are driving ad dollars to sites with pirated content, with marketers often unaware. "We work diligently to protect our content so it’s unfortunate that ad dollars are finding their way to illegal video sites, most likely unbeknownst to the brands involved," Jeff Cusson, a spokesperson for HBO, told The Wall Street Journal, reporting on the trend. The Journal cited a MediaLink study estimating that 596 sites that air pirated movies and TV programs grab $227 million in ad revenue annually.

A new study from Unruly Media, "The Science of Sharing 2014," analyzes whether Celebrities "are worth the budget spend." Judging from Super Bowl XLVIII, the answer is no. "Celebrities do not drive online ad sharing," says the report, adding, "This is not just restricted to the Big Game. Despite brands using celebrities for many of their ads, only 13% of the most shared ads of all time (top 100) feature stars."

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

Beyond Distribution inked a deal with Travel Channel for season two of BBQ Crawl. The road trip/cooking show is produced by RTR Media Inc for Travel + Escape Channel Canada.

AT THE UPFRONTS

NYC’s Park Avenue Armory was the site for A+E Networks’ Upfronts presentation, chock full of programming news to tantalize advertisers.

A&E greenlit four series and four pilots. New series Dogs of War tells the stories of war veterans matched with companion canines, premiering in fall 2014; reality show Godfather of Pittsburgh launches in fall 2014; social experiment Love Prison (wt), will make a summer 2014 bow and Lone Star Lady (wt), about a woman trying to keep her struck-it-rich family humble, arrives in summer 2014.

In development at A&E are 8 Minutes (wt), about an organization working to save young girls from prostitution; build-a-business show Big Brew Theory (wt); Nightwatch (wt), following emergency responders, and The Unproduceables (wt), about a producer trying to create a reality show starring senior citizens.

"We are making a significant investment in growing our original programming," said David McKillop, GM and EVP of A&E. "These projects represent a small percentage of the new innovative formats that we hope will excite current A&E viewers and attract and engage new audiences."

On the Lifetime front: the net is adapting best-seller The Red Tent for a two-part mini-series, starring Rebecca Ferguson (The White Queen), Morena Baccarin (Homeland), Minnie Driver (About a Boy) and Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment).
