Self-described David Letterman fan Jimmy Kimmel announced he’s not going up against Letterman’s final Late Show broadcast May 20 on CBS. “I have too much respect for Dave to do anything that would distract viewers from watching his final show,” the host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live told the New York Times. “Plus, I’ll be crying all day, which makes it hard to work.” The net will air a repeat.

IN THE NEWS

NBC picked up three Universal Television comedies to series: People Are Talking, starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Saved by the Bell), Meaghan Rath (Being Human), stand-up comedian Tone Bell and Bresha Webb (Love That Girl!); empty nesters comedy Crowded, starring Patrick Warburton (Rules of Engagement) and Carrie Preston (True Blood), and workplace comedy Superstore, with America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) and Ben Feldman (A to Z).

Lined up for NBC’s Red Nose Day event on Thursday, May 21 from 8-11p: Julia Roberts, Coldplay, Jennifer Aniston, Julianne Moore, Jodie Foster, Reese Witherspoon and Neil Patrick Harris, to name just a few, along with a slew of cast members from HBO’s Game of Thrones and Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black. Fundraiser hails from the UK, where it’s raised over $1 billion in the past 30 years.

Jimmy Kimmel’s bowing out of the competition on David Letterman’s last night as Late Show host. Should Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon do the same? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

The Mindy Project’s third season was its last …at least on Fox. While the quirky comedy won’t be back on the network, Universal Television is in talks to bring the show to Hulu.

Medical dramedy Hart of Dixie was cancelled by the CW after four seasons, and supernatural drama The Messengers after one. Dixie, which was drawing an average 1.6 million viewers and .6 among A18-49, has concluded its run; Messengers is averaging 1.2 million viewers and .3 in the demo on Friday night.

On the plus side at the CW: Arrow/Flash spinoff DC’s Legends of Tomorrow landed a series order, reports EW, along with epidemic drama Cordon and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, about a woman who exits Manhattan to find love in California.

For the first time, viewers are voting to determine the next cast of Survivor. Thirty-two past players are vying for spots; the 20 who make the cut will be revealed live on the CBS reality show’s season 30 finale Wednesday, May 20 at 10p.

The final episode of Disney XD’s Phineas and Ferb airs Friday, June 12 at 9p, after a 73-hour marathon that kicks off Tuesday, June 9 at 8p. P&F creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh are developing a new animated comedy for the net, Mikey Murphy’s Law.

El Rey Network chairman and founder Robert Rodriguez announced the creation of the El Rey Diversity Council, designed to engage the entertainment industry in developing content “that more fully represents the changing face of America.” Council members will convene for the first time in Austin on May 20.

Enrique Iglesias scored the most nominations for Univision’s Premios Juventud (Youth Awards), with fans voting on the hottest figures in movies, music, fashion, pop culture and sports. Iglesias heads to the live broadcast Thursday, July 16 at 7p with nine chances at a trophy.

Price Is Right contestant Danielle Perez, who became a social media sensation after winning a treadmill on The Price Is Right this week despite the fact that she uses a wheelchair (and being a very good sport about it), landed a spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday. After telling Kimmel of her prize, “I guess I’ll do what everyone else does and use it as a piece of furniture,” Perez was awarded an all-expense-paid Caribbean cruise – with wheelchair accessible entertainment.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Esquire is targeting the upscale, educated male with four original series in development. New shows (working titles all) include Winner’s Circle (SpringHill Productions in association with Magical Elves), featuring celeb friends exploring the party scenes at big sporting events; spin-off Friday Night Tykes: Western, PA (441 Productions); competition Team Ninja Warrior (A. Smith) and documentary series Educating America (TwoFour America). “We’re excited to partner with some of the biggest names in the industry as Esquire Network continues to gain momentum and grow its investment in authentic and original programming,” said Matt Hanna, head of original programming.

Chinese television production company Croton Media finalized a deal with recently formed Sparkstone Entertaiment, calling for Sparkstone to develop up to five series for both Chinese and international audiences, which the companies will produce together.

AT INTX

Research execs parsed how to get, and keep, the attention of millennials during the session, Oh Those Crazy Kids: Understanding Millennials from the Inside Out. “We have to be reinventing ourselves and be as nimble as they are… that reinvention has had to get even faster,” said Jane Gould, SVP, consumer insights & research, at MTV. Gould advised execs to pay attention to “how quickly things can happen. As recently as five years ago if you were relevant once a week you were doing a great job. Now if you’re relevant once a week it’s like, Where have you been? We need to be relevant every minute at this point.” Donna Murphy, SVP, consumer & strategic insights at Discovery, pointed to the importance of creating a chain reaction with programming. “Content becomes a bedrock not just for conversation but for action and sharing. It starts with a great story and solid characters. When they aren’t there, it falls flat and can be ignored because there are so many places in ecosystem they can travel.”

Tough love celebrity chef Robert Irvine, star of Food Network’s Restaurant Impossible, told Cynopsis he emphasizes the love when working with the family dynamics that often surround restaurants in need of a turnaround. Chatting during the INTX Chairman’s Reception, Irvine said, “It’s always about fixing the family first. The restaurant comes second.”

COMING UP

PBS and BBC announced Big Blue Live, a live television event showcasing marine life along the West Coast. Humpback whales, great white sharks and dolphins are among the special guests expected for content airing over three nights, August 31-September 2 on PBS. Programming is part of a co-production deal with PBS, BBC and BBC Worldwide North America.

Funny or Die’s The Spoils Before Dying will premiere “in its full cinematic glory” as a three-night comedy mini-series event Wednesday, July 8-Friday, July 10, announced IFC. Cast includes exec producer Will Ferrell and fellow SNL alums Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig, among others. “We may all wind up in jail, but this epic tale of sex, drugs, violence and jazz WILL be seen,” assured IFC president Jennifer Caserta.

Telemundo is going Big Brother with Gran Hermano, the first-ever Spanish-language U.S. reality show based on the worldwide hit format. Original series will be produced by Endemol Shine Latino exclusively for the net, featuring a U.S. Hispanic cast.

Mother Funders, a “comedic docu-soap” about the triumphs and disasters of a parent/teacher organization run by suburban moms who will do anything for their kids, gets a special preview Mother’s Day, May 10 at 10:30p on Bravo.

The 2015 Billboard Music Awards opens with the world premiere of Taylor Swift’s new music video, “Bad Blood,” which sounds like a doozy, including “multiple starring roles played by a cast of Golden Globe winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winner, and Oscar nominee, blockbuster movie stars.” And supermodels. Awards show airs live Sunday, May 17 at 8p on ABC.

TV One original film For the Love of Ruth debuts Saturday, May 9 at 8p. Inspired by the Biblical story of Ruth, the movie features Grammy nominated singer Angie Stone, and incudes her original song, “Dream.” D’Angela Proctor, SVP original programming, tells Cynopsis, “We hope that the story of compassion told in this film will encourage viewers to spread kindness and humanity.”

Reelz is airing the American Veterans Center’s 2015 National Memorial Day Parade live on Monday, May 25 at 2p. World War II vets will be honored as Grand Marshals; Gary Sinise serves as celebrity guest.

What’s the thinking behind Destination America’s “I Want My Mommy” marathon, airing Sunday from 1-11p and featuring episodes from When Ghosts Attack and Ghost Asylum? The programming gives viewers “extra motivation to hold their moms tightly this Mother’s Day,” Marc Etkind, net GM, tells Cynopsis. “You can run and you can hide, but in the end there’s nothing like a mother’s love to banish things that go bump in the night.”

More DA news: Tonight’s Impact Wrestling goes live a 9p, with “sadistic and bloodthirsty” Eric Young challenging Olympic Gold Medalist and TNA champ Kurt Angle for the title.

Justice Network commemorates National Police Week, beginning Monday, May 11, by showcasing five “Top Cop” stories, with videos shared on its web site and social platforms, and promoted on the net. Other highlights during the week include a candlelight vigil posted to social media and a roll call of fallen officers.

Paley Center for Media is celebrating ABC’s Dancing With the Stars with “a screening and conversation” Thursday, May 14. Assorted DWTS talent, TBA, will be on hand.

NEW SERIES

Holly Robinson Peete (21 Jump Street) and NFL-er hubby Rodney Peete are set to star in docu-series For Peete’s Sake (wt) for OWN’s Saturday night lineup. “As longtime members of The Oprah Show family, we’ve watched Holly and Rodney navigate successful careers in show business, a devoted marriage and a growing, love-filled family,” said Sheri Salata, president, OWN. “This new series gives an entertaining and honest look at a modern family that just happens to live in the celebrity spotlight.”

TLC’s The Little Couple returns Tuesday, May 26 at 9p, coinciding with the release of Jen Arnold and Bill Klein’s book, “Life Is Short (No Pun Intended)”. Theme of the season: trying new things.

Season two of Call to Cosplay launches on Myx TV Tuesday, May 12 at 8p. Anime expert Keith Kawamura hosts.

Chris Jericho will host USA’s WWE Tough Enough, premiering live Tuesday, June 23 at 8p. Panel of experts includes WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan, WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan and WWE Diva Paige. Series will feature live voting, with immediate results.

UPFRONTS UPDATE

Bounce TV packed a punch announcing programming plans for the 2015-2016 Upfront season that include more of what’s working, its first-ever drama series and live boxing events.

Mann & Wife, the net’s most-watched original series ever, will be back for season two, sitcom Family Time returns for season three and stand-up series Off the Chain was renewed for season four. What’s new? Drama Saints & Sinners, set against the backdrop of a large southern church, is in development with Swirl Films’ Eric Tomosunas for a 2016 debut. The net also inked a multi-year deal to televise live Premier Boxing Champions events, starting in July with monthly PBC The Next Round.

“We continue to expand our original programming line-up to offer marketing partners fresh and engaging new programming that our loyal and dedicated viewers will love,” said Elverage Allen, EVP of ad sales. “Our originals have been helping to fuel Bounce TV’s record-setting ratings and viewership growth which combines with our exclusive and unduplicated reach to make the network a must-buy for brands seeking to reach the African American consumer.”

Univision, hosting its Upfront presentation May 12, unveiled elements of its “The Way Forward” presentation, including tailored content targeting three groups: Hispanics, millennials and bilinguals – or “billennials.” Its formula for success: Scale (49 million unduplicated consumers monthly across platforms), Live Viewership (an average 91 percent live viewing among A18-49 in primetime this season); Commercial Audience Retention (96 percent of viewers don’t fast-forward through commercials) and Unduplicated Audiences (73 percent of the net’s weekly primetime audience doesn’t watch any of the top-rated English-language nets).

“The Hispanic community is a bold, dynamic force fueling the growth of this country and influencing our economy, culture and policymaking across the board,” said Randy Falco, president and CEO of Univision Communications. “Hispanics represent one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. population and are projected to fuel the country’s growth. This is our audience, and we are here to show marketers that in addition to being 57-million strong, Hispanics are young, bilingual, upwardly mobile, socially engaged and digitally savvy…It’s clear that our audience is the way forward for marketers to grow their brands.”

Ahead of its annual, hot ticket Upfront event, which this year will feature a performance by Miley Cyrus, Turner’s Adult Swim avoided the crush by releasing its slate of new and returning programming early, including 30 new original series, specials and pilots.

“Adult Swim has always been known as a place for taking risks and for great talent trying interesting things,” said Christina Miller, president and general manager, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Boomerang. “Mike (Lazzo) and his team continue to raise the bar, always knowing what the Adult Swim fan wants; and this new slate of original programming adds to our growing line-up of successful primetime comedies.”

New series include quarter-hour animated sketch show TV Sucks (Titmouse), half-hour life action Untitled Gold Special (Alive and Kicking), miniseries Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter (PFFR), two new Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories (Abso Lutely), the third installment of Brett Gelman’s half-hour “Dinner” specials (Abso Lutely) and Robot Chicken DC Comics Special III: Friendship is Magic (wt), with Batman and Superman’s bromance “taking a competitive turn.”

“There is no better environment for an advertiser seeking to engage and connect with this sought-after millennial consumer,” said Donna Speciale, president of Turner Broadcasting Ad Sales. “Through premium top-rated multi-screen programming, custom-produced branded content, on-site media activations and digital engagement, there is limitless return potential for marketers aligning with us and this valuable brand.”
