FX’s Justified scored the most Critics Choice Television Awards nominations for a regular series, with five, a number matched by HBO limited series Olive Kitteredge. Tied with four nominations each: FX’s The Americans, HBO’s Bessie, CBS’s The Good Wife, Amazon’s Transparent and PBS’s Wolf Hall. HBO grabbed the most nods overall, with 27, followed by FX’s 16. A&E airs the awards show live on Sunday, May 31 at 8p.

IN THE NEWS

In the wake of a $15 million lawsuit alleging discriminatory practices and the exits of three top executives, Al Jazeera Media Network replaced CEO Ehab Alshihabi with Al Anstey yesterday. Anstey, who started his career with CBS News, joined Al Jazeera in 2005.

Former President Bill Clinton will appear at Univision’s NYC Upfront presentation on May 12, for a Q&A in front of advertisers. Theme of the morning: “This Way Forward.”

Debbie Allen, who has acted and directed on Grey’s Anatomy in the past, will serve as exec producer/director for the ABC medical drama’s upcoming season twelve, reports Deadline. Allen has also directed Shondaland’s Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder, as well as the season finale of Fox hit Empire.

Latin music star Alejandro Sanz will take a judge’s seat for Univision’s upcoming La Banda. Music reality competition developed by Univision, Simon Cowell’s SYCO Entertainment and Saban Brands is slated for a September premiere.

Female-focused Lifetime announced the launch of Broad Focus on Tuesday, an initiative designed to provide women with more opportunities to write, develop, produce and direct for the net. “There is a large, untapped well of female talent out there and we want to remain first in line to that source of creativity,” said Nancy Dubuc, President and CEO, A+E Networks. Broad Focus will be showcased on-air through sponsored short-form content about women filmmakers, as well as with short films directed by women in partnership with marketers.

TNT adjusted its summer sked, moving Public Morals to Tuesday, August 25 at 10p, and pushing the season two premiere of Legends, which originally filled that slot, to fall.

Bob Bain (Teen Choice Awards, Miss America Pageant) will exec produce the 2015 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, his first year on the job. Spike Jones Jr. had been at the helm for 11 of the last 12 years.

WE tv got so many selfie submissions of viewers with their furry friends for the net’s #WatchingWE on-air initiative, now they’re asking viewers to upload photos to Instagram tagged with #WELovePets. The overall promotion is part of WE tv’s “All In” rebrand.

The 5th annual PromaxBDA Station Summit hits Vegas June 23-26. Among the highlights: the local broadcast marketing industry celebrates their finest at the PromaxBDALocal Awards and Just Cause Awards on June 25, at a ceremony hosted by Jonathan Kite (2 Broke Girls).

The Federal Aviation Administration is turning to CNN, along with two other companies, for input on how to expand commercial drone use. “Government has some the best and brightest minds in aviation, but we can’t operate in a vacuum,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “This is a big job, and we’ll get to our goal of safe, widespread UAS integration more quickly by leveraging the resources and expertise of the industry.”

AT INTX

FCC chair Tom Wheeler’s talk of regulators and the cable industry finding common ground on the open Internet mostly fell on deaf ears yesterday at INTX. “I know this industry does not support the recent open Internet order,” Wheeler said. “But I also believe that we can note where we agree … Maintaining, improving and protecting broadband transmission is the right thing to do. America depends on it.” Well, not so fast… “I’m baffled by the chairman’s remarks. I’ll say it because he doesn’t regulate my business,” said Michael Fries, president/CEO of Liberty Global. “There’s a presumption of guilt and punishment of the success this industry has achieved that I’ve never witnessed before. It’s terrible regulation, I’ll say what these guys are probably thinking… We’re happy to be abroad, let’s put it that way.” These guys, BTW, refer to Cablevision CEO James Dolan, Cox president Pat Esser, Time Warner Cable chief Rob Marcus and Charter president/CEO Tom Rutledge, who joined Fries on stage. Not one disagreed with his assessment.

Tough words from Liberty Global’s Michael Fries. Do you agree with his description of Internet regulation? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

In today’s fragmented viewing landscape, it’s vital to be a content owner. This according to John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions, who said at INTX that because FX owns the majority of programming on its three networks, the company is benefiting from OTT consumption that’s happening in the after-market. “We benefit from preserving the first window for our cable partners. If we were in the business of renting programming instead of owning it, that would be a licensing business. I don’t think we could make the numbers work,” he said.

Quote of the day: TVE growth is all about big live events, said Greg Weinstein, VP, audience development, at Univision, adding, “If we TVE marketers were retailers, events would be our black Friday.”
