ABC demonstrated its faith in Jimmy Kimmel as a weapon in the late night war with a two-year contract extension. In the face of fierce competition, JKL is up 16 percent in total viewers this season and up 13 percent among A18-49.

IN THE NEWS

NBC yanked Believe and Crisis from the May sweep lineup for Sunday, May 18, slotting a Women of SNL special instead. The midseason dramas scored 1.0 in the A18-49 demo on Sunday.

IFC unveiled a new logo and a new look. "After nearly four years it was time to give IFC a little facelift," said Blake Callaway, IFC’s EVP of marketing & digital media. "The new brand design is not only a great look, but it also allows us to apply our uniquely offbeat sensibility to everything we do – show promotions, movie promos and even the boring stuff like ratings disclaimers will have our unique take."

The average TV home gets 189 channels, versus 129 in 2008 – but consumers still tune in to an average of just 17 of those channels, according to Nielsen‘s Advertising & Audiences Report. What’s the best strategy? "Be the best option," says Nielsen.

After the first iHeartRadio Music Awards helped boost NBC‘s Thursday A18-49 average by over 50 percent, to 1.7/5 on May 1, the net signed with Clear Channel Media for a 2015 telecast.

CBS Cares and the National Stroke Association have teamed for PSA storytelling messages to raise awareness of the risk factors associated with strokes. "We learned that every 40 seconds someone in the United States experiences a stroke, often when doing very ordinary things," said Matthew Margo, SVP, program practices, CBS. "So we wanted to portray that experience for our audience and emphasize that strokes can happen to anyone, anywhere, even at a family event, and to illustrate that they are preventable." The campaign runs through May.

Calling Discovery nets "platform agnostic," CEO David Zaslav said in an earnings call Tuesday that he’d consider selling programming to online ventures. "This is the best time to be in the content business when you own your own content," said Zaslav. As for reports that Discovery is interested in U.K. production company All3Media, the exec said, "We look at everything, but only want to buy assets that will help us strategically."

Country star Brad Paisley will take a judge’s chair on ABC‘s upcoming singing competition Rising Star, reports Deadline. Auditions are underway for the series, based on the red-hot Israeli format, premiering Sunday, June 22 at 9p.

With A-list talent and high-profile deals, it’s clear the NewFronts are on the fast track… but to where? In a new Cynsiders column, "NewFronts Are Primetime," IAB’s Julie Van Ullen makes the case that while high quality digital content is hardly abundant, "the NewFronts serve an important role in this exploding marketplace."

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Hispanic cabler mun2 is teaming with 7UP for dance series Dance y Electro Powered by 7UP. What prompted the partnership? "29 percent of the electronic music festival goers are Hispanic and 7UP believes this is the space that we definitely need to be part of," Dave Falk, VP of marketing for the brand, tells Cynopsis. "It’s part of a larger cultural movement happening with millennials and we have to be where these influencers are." Adds Joe Bernard, SVP Sales for mun2, "7UP was a logical sponsor. They are a brand our audience knows supports their lifestyle and passion points." The 12-ep, 30-minute series premieres Thursday, May 8 at 4p.

Part of IFC‘s aforementioned brand refresh involves a new advertising approach. "30 Seconds of Cuteness" places an advertiser’s product in a sea of playful puppies or kittens; "Commercial Replay" has a commercial run back to back, with the second airing getting IFC commentary. "Our audience knows they’re watching an ad, so we have fun with it," said the net.
