IN THE NEWS
Les Moonves said CBS “is salivating” ahead of Upfronts, anticipating bigger sales and higher prices than last year. In CBS’ earnings call yesterday, the CEO predicted double digit percent price increases, shrugging off concerns about competition from digital. “Questions are now arising about the effectiveness of certain digital media platforms,” noted Moonves, who also said skinny bundle services like Hulu’s planned offering will be a “huge positive” for CBS, as they’d pay rates higher than current partners. CBS’s 1Q16 net earnings were $473 million, up 20 percent versus last year to beat Wall Street forecasts. “CBS delivered a spectacular quarter as we continue to execute on our strategy of creating and distributing the content that audiences have to have,” said Moonves. “Looking ahead, we are in a very enviable position for this year’s Upfront.”
ABC late night host Jimmy Kimmel will be first to sit in the guest co-host seat on Live With Kelly Ripa after the departure of Michael Strahan (did you hear he’s going to Good Morning America?). Kimmel joins Ripa on the syndicated morning talker Monday, May 16. The show will rotate co-hosts until a permanent partner for Ripa is found, as it did after Regis Philbin’s departure in 2011; back then the first guest co-host was Jerry Seinfeld.
Is there something in the morning show water? According to The Wrap, Whoopi Goldberg, whose contract with ABC’s The View expires this season, has said she’s “fed up” with the talker and wants to leave. Goldberg is reportedly in talks with the net about extending her contract. Goldberg’s publicist and agents did not return calls or emails regarding the matter.
CBS is ditching the CBS Evening News brand on weekends and replacing it with CBS Weekend News, effective this Saturday. CBSN anchors Reena Ninan and Elaine Quijano will serve as anchors on the show, replacing Jim Axelrod on Saturdays and Jeff Glor. (Both are staying with the network.) The new news show will feature content from CBSN, the network’s live-streaming news service.
Nominations were announced for The 70th Annual Tony Awards, airing live on Sunday, June 12 at 8p on CBS. Hamilton (surprise!) leads the pack, with nods in a whopping 16 categories, making it the new record holder.
Corbis Entertainment has been renamed Branded Entertainment Network. The move reflects the company’s evolution to connect global brands to consumers through the power of popular entertainment. “We exclusively access and turn premium entertainment content into measurable advertising opportunities,” said CEO Gary Shenk, BEN. “BEN represents an overarching ability to connect global brands with the most popular shows, stars and icons across the entire entertainment spectrum whether it’s television, film or digital content.”
The portrayal of veterans on television influences not just the general public, but veterans and their families. Says Bill Rausch, executive director of Got Your 6, “There is real potential here to break through the clutter and change minds.” Find out which shows are having the most impact (you might be surprised) in the latest Cynsiders.
Only one third of broadband customers would recommend their service provider, according to a survey from Incognito Software Systems conducted in March. What’s the beef? “In this era of subscriber monetization, it’s essential that broadband providers clearly grasp what’s important to their existing subscribers,” said Stephane Bourque, president and CEO of Incognito. “As our survey shows, providers are expected to do more than ever before: provide faster speeds, lower prices and superior WiFi capabilities to live up to their subscribers’ demands.” Suburbanites were most sensitive to price, with 46 percent of them listing it as their top concern, versus 35 percent in urban areas. On the bright side, only one in ten customers actually went ahead and switched providers in the last year.

UPFRONTS: MEASUREMENT EDITION
A study of nine cable and broadcast shows across genres showed A18-49 ratings grew as long as 18 weeks past the original air date, from 4 to 58 percent over Live+7 numbers, revealed Nielsen at a press breakfast on Tuesday. Genre determined the lift: reality competitions saw a 4 percent boost, while serial drama had a 13 percent lift, episodic dramas rose 16-30 percent, sitcoms had a 21-32 percent rise and animated comedies (which skew young and can be watched out of order) rose 52-58 percent.
Among other insights: Only 7 percent of DVR playback occurs after Live+7, as viewers move to VOD. “The method of viewing changes as the distance from the original airing grows,” said Glenn Enoch, SVP, audience insights at Nielsen. “The longer you go down the line, the more likely you are to go to a digital source or a VOD source to watch the program.” And that audience is catnip to advertisers, because “the average are of a program, over time, will get younger and younger,” said Enoch. Also of note: Live viewers average 15 minutes per program, while VOD and digital viewers average over 30 minutes.
While the measurement company has completed the framework for its previously announced Total Audience Measurement (including digital, over-the-top VOD, set-top box VOD and DVR viewing after Day 8), the new findings won’t take center stage as networks strut their stuff over the coming weeks. “Our clients have asked us to be sensitive to the upfront season," said Kelly Abcarian, SVP, product leadership for Nielsen. “They’ve asked us to work with them to introduce this new data set into the marketplace.” Third party syndicated data is expected later this year. Ultimately, the goal is to “bring the data together so that both the buy and sell side can understand how to plan and sell on audience across time, programming and sites,” said Abcarian.
