Where You Get Your Weather Matters

IN THE NEWS

Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira and Savannah Guthrie are set to host NBC’s coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the XXXI Olympic Games on Friday, August 5, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This year’s Games mark Lauer’s 11th Olympics for Today, and his fifth time working the primetime Opening Ceremony broadcast. It’s Vieira’s third Opening Ceremony for NBC, and Guthrie’s third Olympics for Today.

More proof the rumors of traditional TV’s death have been greatly exaggerated. The four broadcast networks soared to the top in a Tivo survey in March that asked: If you could only choose a limited number of programming sources from which you could watch TV, which of the following do you consider “must-keep”? The choices included 65 top-rated TV nets in addition to Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. Among participants, 77 percent cited ABC, 76 percent CBS, 75 percent NBC and 57 percent Fox. “There is a lot excitement around new non-tradition video options today,” Tara Maitra, GM and SVP, Tivo Research, tells Cynopsis. “However, it seems people still like tradition – ranking the big four broadcast networks as their favorites.”

Fox will not be proceeding with its series plans for Famous, the half-hour comedy created by writer/producer Ralph Farquhar (Real Husbands Of Hollywood) and Ty Hodges, reports Deadline. The project was given a 10-episode straight-to-series order earlier this month and was slated for June 12 premiere.

The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors today announced this year’s Documentary and Education winners: Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief (HBO), How to Dance in Ohio (HBO), Independent Lens: India’s Daughter (PBS), ISIS in Afghanistan (PBS/WGBH), Listen to Me Marlon (Showtime), Night Will Fall (HBO), POV: Don’t Tell Anyone (PBS), The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst (HBO) and What Happened, Miss Simone? (Netflix).

Fox News Channel’s On The Record with Greta Van Susteren will host a Donald Trump town hall today (April 27), live from the Hilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Gordon Ramsay, chef, TV personality and producer, has cooked up Studio Ramsay, an indie production company solely owned by him, where he plans to create unscripted shows and develop talent. Studio Ramsay also will have a scripted division to focus on food-themed programming. Ramsay and his new company are in a joint venture with All3Media, with which he’s had a business relationship for six years.

Kerry Washington signed an overall deal with ABC Studios, home of her hit series Scandal, and its cable/digital division ABC Signature Studios, for her new production company Simpson Street. The two-year pact will see Simpson Street, develop exclusive broadcast, cable and digital projects. Washington brings Sharla Sumpter Bridgett to the studio as development executive and producing partner at Simpson Street. Simpson Street’s first project, in the works before the ABC deal, was Confirmation, HBO’s movie about the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas scandal.

Paramount TV will serve as lead studio, and Jeff Okin and Kerry Roberts from Anonymous Content will produce along with Abby Ex. Traister will exec-produce.

TBS is continuing to mine the former Daily Show coffers. The network gave a pilot order to weekly late-nighter Rob Riggle’s Sportsbook, which aims to display the humor in the 24-hour digital cycle of sports, news and entertainment. The move follows TBS’ successful collaborations with Daily Show alums Samantha Bee and Jason Jones.
