Where You Get Your Weather Matters
IN THE NEWS
Kelly Ripa will be back in her Live! With Kelly and Michael co-host seat tomorrow. Upset about the way the announcement that co-host Michael Strahan was decamping for ABC’s Good Morning America was handled, Ripa was a no-show on the syndie talker Wednesday and radio silent until Friday night, when she emailed staffers, “I wanted to thank you all for giving me the time to process this new information…We are a family and I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday morning.”
Concern for the rights of copyright holders has been expressed by numerous groups regarding the FCC’s proposed set-top box regulations. Public filings were submitted Friday, and the DGA, SAG-AFTRA and the Independent Film and Television Alliance were among those arguing that the ability of content creators to be properly compensated will be adversely affected by the proposed new rules, which would push cable companies to make their video services deliverable by means other than set-top boxes.
The National Cable Telecommunications Association also called foul on the FCC’s set-top box rules rewrite. “What they’re proposing exceeds the statutory parameters of what they’re required to operate under,” said NCTA president and CEO Michael Powell on Thursday.
The National Cable TV Cooperative is “finishing up a deal with Netflix,” said CEO Rich Fickle last week. About 20 NCTC members are already integrating Netflix into their set-top, and that has led to higher overall usage, said Fickle. Under a master agreement, NCTC members would have the option of integrating the streaming service through the TiVo interface with a revenue-sharing model. NCTC already has a pact in place with Hulu.
Univision is targeting the second half of 2016 for its initial public offering, according to Bloomberg, assuming market conditions place the offering’s value at over $6.5 billion. The Spanish-language broadcaster announced last July that proceeds will be used to repay debt and for other corporate expenses.
Saturday, the night her short film, Lemonade, aired on HBO, Beyonce surprise-dropped a record of the same name on streaming service Tidal. The pay-TV special, announced the week prior via Instagram, featured cameos from Serena Williams and Jay Z.
A 20th anniversary Everybody Loves Raymond reunion panel scheduled for June’s ATX Television Festival in Austin has been canceled. “Many factors made this not the right time,” tweeted organizers on Thursday. The announcement comes after the death of cast member Doris Roberts on April 17.
Among the Peabody 30 winners, for entertainment and children’s programs, were Beasts of No Nation, Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Master of None from Netflix; ABC’s black-ish; SundanceTV’s Deutschland 83; USA’s Mr. Robot; HBO’s The Leftovers; Amazon’s Transparent; Lifetime’s Unreal; PBS’s Wolf Hall and Cbeebies’ Katie Morag. Documentary and education winners will be announced on the Peabody Facebook page Tuesday, April 26 at 2p.
The Paley Media Council’s PaleyDialogue on Thursday featured Starz CEO Chris Albrecht and Power creator, showrunner and exec producer Courtney A. Kemp. Words of advice? “We’ve made a commitment to find those people who are passionate about our shows,” said Albrecht of social media efforts. “They’re an auxiliary marketing team.” Offered Kemp, “I can plot like nobody’s business but I can’t write an action scene. Know what you don’t know and what you can do.”
In the bag: ABC talker The View kicked off its Spring Handbag Sweepstakes on Friday. Winner gets a Neverfull Louis Vuitton purse valued at over $1300, “frequently seen on the arms of some of the best-dressed stars.” Enter on the show’s Facebook page; winner will be announced live on April 28.
Did Kelly Ripa overreact by not showing up for work after learning Michael Strahan was leaving Live! With Kelly and Michael? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

RESEARCH
Binge watchers are also big linear TV viewers, according a Forrester Research study. Heavy binge watchers take in about 12.3 hours of linear television a week, versus 11.8 hours for non-bingers. But binge-watching was on the decline from 2014 to 2015, reported respondents, dropping from 78 percent to 74 percent among A18-26, and from 63 percent to 54 percent among A36-49.
About 65 percent of U.S. TV homes have a connected TV, up from 44 percent in 2010, according to a new study from Leichtman Research Group. And there are more connected TV devices than set-top boxes. Of homes with a device, almost three-quarters have more than one.
