CYNOPSISSPORTS
04.25.16

Good morning. It’s Monday April 25, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

For those that missed last week’s Cynopsis Sports Awards, we’ll open today with some snippets from our luminaries, MLS Commissioner Don Garber, FOX Sports President, COO and Executive Producer Eric Shanks, Hyundai VP of Corporate & Product Planning Mike O’Brien and MLB Network President Rob McGlarry.

Don Garber on FIFA corruption: Change is good when governance is managed from within. You try to figure out how you can get better when you go about making decisions. But when change is forced upon you, then things can happen in a really fast, more effective way and that’s what happened with FIFA. With a new president in place, our government and Department of Justice and many other organizations around the world are now looking at the organization and saying that all of this stuff is not ok. The way decisions were made, the way people were behaving, the way they were operating; there was a real culture of corruption within the sport. I believe that the government shifts that have been enacted have been good and positive for the sport. I think we are in for some positive changes for the sport that has had some challenges.

Eric Shanks on shifting FS1 away from news: It’s pretty clear (how people are now consuming sports news). You look at great products like Bleacher Report, the ESPN app, the FOX Sports app, and clearly consumers are changing how news and highlights find them and that impacts your linear strategy, you digital strategy and your social media strategy. Consumers are telling you what they want on different platforms and news and highlights are things that you get in your pocket even before you get home from work. On linear TV, they are telling us that they want us to put all of that news and highlights, which are still important, in context with great personalities.

Mike O’Brien on Hyundai’s approach to sports: At Hyundai, we believe the emotional connection between our brand and fan passion by partnering with the biggest brands in media and sports sponsorships, we are able to build deep relationships with our consumers across multiple channels from an integrated perspective, which is truly evidenced as to why we are here today.

Rob McGlarry on the difference between running a baseball and a hockey network: Some are pretty obvious. In hockey, they play indoors and while that seems obvious, you would not imagine how much time MLB spends talking about the weather and whether it rains in St. Louis and when we think that game might end. So not having to worry about the weather has been a blessing. There is also the clock. This is not about me talking about the pace of play at MLB, but a game can range anywhere from two hours to longer. In hockey, during the regular season, we have a pretty good idea how long games are going to last and when our studio shows are going to come up. But the similarities are really more important, the NHL has a great heart just as MLB has been since the beginning. The biggest thing is the passion and the professionalism that they both bring in every day, whether they are working on hockey or baseball is unparalleled.

ON THE AIR

Speaking of Don Garber, the MLS Commissioner told a slew of Associated Press sports editors on Thursday that the next round of expansion decisions to push the league to 28 teams overall, would get take place in the mid-2020s and mark the final round of expansion for the league over the next 10 years. "There was a time when we were trying to figure out how to get cities and communities and investors to want an MLS team, and now we need to figure out how to get all the cities that want an MLS team to be prioritized for us so that we can grow our league for the rest of time," Garber said, per Sports Illustrated. "When we were looking at expanding in our last round, we did not think in our wildest dreams that we would have 60,000 people coming out in the second year for the opening game in Orlando, or that we would be playing in the Citrus Bowl and now have to build a soccer stadium that is now 10,000 seats larger than we originally planned. That’s not something that was part of the original plan, to be frank."

NBA TV continues to see its playoff telecasts climb, as Thursday’s coverage of Warriors/Rockets averaged 4.6 million viewers for a 15% markup over the comparable numbers in 2015.

Elsewhere, the lack of a Canadian team in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs has found Sportsnet’s cable channels and CBC average around 500,000 viewers from April 13-17, according to ESPN, sliding 60% from last year’s average of 1.3 million over the same period a year ago, when five of the country’s teams were still competing. Meanwhile, NBC saw the first eight days of the postseason average 484,000 viewers, up from 2015.

Speaking of hockey, the NHL lined up Game 6 of the start time for Game 6 of the First Round series between the Ducks/Predators for 8p on CNBC tonight. Meanwhile, Game 7 of the First Round series between the Blues/Blackhawks begins at 8:30p tonight on NBCSN.

ESPN detailed plans for the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, set to take place during the opening weekend of the college football season from Daytona Beach this year with Alcorn State University/Bethune-Cookman University, while 2017 takes place in Baton Rouge in 2017 and features South Carolina State University Southern University. Both games will be aired on an ESPN network.

Game 5 of the Blues’ first-round playoff series against Chicago ranks as the most-watched Blues game on FOX Sports Midwest in the team’s 20 seasons on the regional sports network. The double-overtime matchup drew a 15.0 rating/183,000 households for the channel in the St. Louis market, according to Nielsen, ranking as the most-watched program of the day.

ESPORTS/GAMING

ESL made headlines over the weekend after enforcing a new rule that bans Team YP from participating in future events. VentureBeat reports that the eSports team, which is owned by the adult website YouPorn, has now been banned as a result of a rule that blocks sponsors widely known for adult entertainment and products. “I am disappointed that Team YP’s growth is being stunted by this decision, not to mention the effect that this will have on our roster of players,” Team YP manager Claire Fisher said in a statement. “While for some, our participation in eSports has been controversial, stopping our players from competing because they are sponsored by us, in spite of Team YP operating as a completely SFW brand, clearly separated from any adult content, seems unfair to say the least.”

Gfinity is opening up eSports tournaments to more Xbox One players, courtesy of a new app allowing users to build their own tournaments, marking the first time in console history that players can “create and manage your own cups, leagues, ladders and competitions” directly from the console. In addition, the company unveiled a $2,000 Rocket League Tournament for Europe and North America on the console.

Pizza Hut is coming back to serve as title sponsor of RTX, according to Fortune. The annual gaming event is expected to draw around 60,000 attendees and the brand will partner with the event organizer and Web video production studio Rooster Teeth to host tournaments, booths and other activities throughout the weekend.

Former Warner Bros. exec and Monolith Productions founder Jace Hall was named the new CEO of eSports outfit Echo Fox. “I feel very fortunate to welcome Jace to the Echo Fox family,” Rick Fox, owner of Echo Fox said in a statement. “He is an industry leader whose experience, vision and knowledge of the eSports [sic] industry make him an incredible addition to our franchise.”
