IN THE NEWS

Lifetime announced multi-platform initiative The Fempire, featuring content for women, by women and about women. Projects include a scripted Selena Gomez drama, inspired by the singer and Justin Bieber ex’s time in Hollywood. The net also inked movie deals with Janet Jackson, Serena Williams and mixed martial artist/actress Ronda Rousey. Jackson will EP the true story of 1920’s New York City mobster, Queenie (wt), the first and only woman gangster during the prohibition, Williams will serve as EP on Sister Dance (wt), a story inspired by the annual dance-off competition she hosts with her sister, Venus, and Rousey signed a three-picture movie deal.

Kelly Ripa was a no-show Wednesday on her morning talk show, Live With Kelly And Michael, the day after her co-host Michael Strahan announced he was decamping for a full-time job on ABC’s Good Morning America. While ABC said Ripa had a “previously scheduled vacation” slated for Friday-Monday, her absence before that offered credence to reports that she was blindsided by Tuesday’s announcement.

The 2016 Beta Research Brand Identity Study revealed its top ranked basic cable and digital basic cable networks and History, HGTV, Investigation Discovery, American Heroes Channel and Discovery Channel statistically tied for first as a favorite channel among network viewers age 18+. Nets with viewers more likely to buy products advertised included Food Network, OWN, HGTV, and Nickelodeon among basic cable nets, while American Heroes Channel, INSP, Velocity and DIY were among top ranked digital basic networks.

The Weather Channel was named the 2016 Harris Poll EquiTrend TV News Brand of the Year for the sixth consecutive year. The Index is comprised of three factors: familiarity, quality and consideration.

UPFRONTS UPDATE

BET Networks announced its 2016 programming schedule for BET and Centric at its upfront presentation on Wednesday. “We have developed a deep and authentic relationship with our audience over the last 36 years, and it is that genuine connection that has allowed BET to expand into a global multiplatform brand. This year, we are committed to reaching far beyond the television screen and continuing to deliver more of the premium content that our audiences have come to expect,” said Debra Lee, chairman and CEO, BET Networks. “With BET being more accessible across more platforms, we are creating a powerful 360 degree experience for our audience to interact with the BET brand like never before.”

New scripted shows include Tales, a 60-minute anthology series weaving hip-hop songs into 3-act narratives, and The Yard, starring Tony Award winners Anika Noni Rose and Ruben Santiago-Hudson, which takes viewers inside the unique, culture-filled world of historically Black colleges and universities. On the docu-series front, Music Moguls explores the lives of Birdman, Dame Dash, Jermaine Dupri and Snoop Dogg as each entrepreneur navigates everything from grooming new talent to raising their college-bound children. New Edition: The Movie, a 3-part miniseries about the boy band, and Madiba, an original production that focuses on the story of Nelson Mandela, cap off the net’s movie events.

Empowering new programming on Centric include Queen Bee, a reality competition that discovers entrepreneurs building real-life companies, and Monica Morton, P.I., centered on a real-life investigator and crisis manager.

With more premium programming and platforms than ever, “We have a great story to tell,” says BET Networks chairman and CEO Debra Lee. Find out more – including what movie studios need to learn about African American movie-goers – in the latest Cynsiders here.

At Crackle’s upfront presentation, Sony’s streaming service announced the network’s program, advertising and virtual reality offerings. Crackle General Manager and EVP, Sony Pictures Television digital networks, Eric Berger said, “At Crackle, we believe that creating content and ad experiences that mirror changing consumer habits are instrumental for driving viewer attention. We’re charting a path for television with a sustainable ad model that is a win for the advertiser, the network and most importantly, the consumer.” As a result, an advertising solution for bingeing original series, called “break-free advertising,” was unveiled. Instead of 300 ads over the course of a linear TV series, during a Crackle original with 10 episodes the viewer will only get five ads per episode. The same five advertisers will have a spot in each of the 10 episodes, and those advertisers will be able to tell a story across multiple episodes with only four other advertisers to capture the viewer’s attention.

New scripted drama Startup, starring Martin Freeman, Adam Brody, Edi Gathegi and Otmara Marrero, is slated to debut this fall. The 10-episode series explores what happens when a brilliant, yet controversial tech idea gets incubated on the wrong side of the tracks. In addition, Snatch, an original drama based on the Guy Ritchie movie of the same name, is in the works. The 10-episode, one-hour drama centers on a group of twenty-something, up and coming hustlers who stumble upon a truck load of stolen gold bullion and are suddenly thrust into the high-stakes world of organized crime.

The Art of More kicks off production on its sophomore season in Montreal on May 2. Series stars Dennis Quaid, Chrisitan Cooke and Kate Bosworth took the upfront stage to discuss the show, which premiered last November. The auction house drama returns in Q4 this year for another 10-episode season.
