IN THE NEWS

Fox primetime special Megyn Kelly Presents has been moved up to Tuesday, May 17 from May 23. It will be the first in a series of specials starring Fox News Channel’s The Kelly File host, whose FNC show on Wednesday drew 2.2 million viewers as she described her recent meeting with Donald Trump. “Mr. Trump and I discussed the possibility of an interview. And I hope we will have news to announce soon,” said Kelly. Coupled, a new dating show from Mark Burnett, will follow the May 17 special.

For your consideration: Showtime is offering Television Academy members a free subscription through its stand-alone streaming service. All of Showtime’s Emmy-eligible programming, including newcomers Billions and The Circus, will be featured in advertising encouraging Academy members to vote. Freebie lasts through June 30.  Showtime will also once again have a dedicated awards site for screening programs, and is hosting a series of panel events for Television Academy and Guild members in LA and NYC.

NBC is airing an extended, 90-minute version of Adele Live in New York City on Friday, May 6 at 8p. The show’s December 14 telecast averaged a 3.7 rating among A18-49 and 13.8 million viewers in Live+7, NBC’s most-watched concert special in 13 years.

President Obama backed the FCC’s plan to give independent manufacturers of set top boxes alternatives to cable and satellite company deals. Consumers now pay $20 billion to rent or lease boxes, up 185 percent 20 years ago, noted the White House, while the prices for TVs, computers and mobile phones have declined by 90 percent. “Across our economy, too many consumers are dealing with inferior or overpriced products, too many workers aren’t getting the wage increases they deserve, too many entrepreneurs and small businesses are getting squeezed out unfairly by their bigger competitors, and overall we are not seeing the level of innovative growth we would like to see,” said Jason Furman, Chairman of the Council of Ecumenic Advisors, and Jeffrey Zientz, Director of the National Economic Council and Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, in a statement. Responded broadband provider trade association USTelecom, "When the president ‘calls upon’ his appointees and an agency chairman who serves at his pleasure to act in a particular way, he is ‘directing’ them, and all credibility in the independence of the agency and trust in the administrative process evaporates.”

In a court filing, CBS and Big Ticket Television scoffed at the talent agency Rebel Entertainment Partners’ claim that it was owed payments for Judge Judy dating back to 2010.  “Judge Sheindlin, her producers and crew have worked for 20 years in producing a successful syndicated program,” said CBS and Big Ticket. “[Rebel’s Richard] Lawrence has never been on the set of the program in 20 years, nor has he had any communication with his talent.” The filing said the agency had collected $17 in package fees “for doing nothing,” and didn’t represent Judy Sheindlin.

Chosen for the 2015 Television Academy Honors are A&E reality show Born This Way, HBO documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Showtime’s Homeland, Cinemax’s The Knick, Smithsonian Channel doc Mississippi Inferno and Netflix film Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom. Event hosted by Dana Delany will be held in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, June 8.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

TV Land gave a 10-episode order for Throwing Shade, based on the podcast and Funny or Die series. The political and pop culture late nighter is slated to premiere in the 11p timeslot in January 2017.

Happy City, from comedy group Extremely Decent and Dan Harmon (Community), has been put in development at FX. Project centered on a young taxi and his fire truck and helicopter pals  is described as Thomas the Tank Engine for adults.

Production is underway in Canada for Up original movie Rescue on the 55th Floor, starring Catherine Bell (The Good Witch) and Adrian Homes (Arrow). Drama about an architect saving her family from disaster is slated to premiere 1Q17.

Fox pilot Chad: An American Boy, greenlit in February, will not complete production in time to be considered for the fall season. “Because of our commitment to authenticity, we conducted a worldwide casting search for several roles in this pilot which meant that we wouldn’t have been able to get visas in time to shoot within the traditional pilot window,” said 20th Century Fox TV. Shooting on the Middle Eastern family comedy starts in late May.

Lamorne Morris (New Girl) checks into syndicated talker The Doctors today, where topics include fat shaming, working in the food service and butt cheeks.

It didn’t offer much beyond a date (Saturday, April 23  at 9p), but a preview posted on HBO and Beyonce’s social media platforms over the weekend teased a world premiere event called “Lemonade.”

RETURNING SERIES

AMC renewed Fear the Walking Dead for a third season. The zombie drama’s season two premiere delivered 8.8 million total viewers, including 5.3 million among A18-49 in Live+3. Airing Sundays at 9p, the series ranks number two on cable and number seven in all of television.

Food Network freshman Cooks vs. Cons will be back for another season. The competition pitting home cooks against professionals has seen double digit increases across both A25-54 and A25-34 versus year-ago, as well as 17 percent in-show growth during the first half of its six-episode run.

Hallmark Channel ordered a fourth season of drama When Calls the Heart, slated to begin production in Vancouver this summer. No surprise there  the season three final earned a 2.6 HH rating and 3 million total viewers in Live+3, becoming the highest-rated episode in the series’ history. The Sunday, April 10 debut also became the series’ most-watched episode in all demos, and in its 9p time period, elevated Hallmark to rank as the second-most-watched cable net among HHs and total viewers.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Brands have a new way to reach sports fans. The NBA approved jersey sponsorships starting with the 2017-28 season, after selling sponsorship rights to Kia for patches for February’s NBA All-Star Game. Each team will sell its own sponsorship as part of the three-year pilot program. It’s win-win, said NBA commissioner Adam Silver: “Jersey sponsorships provide deeper engagement with partners looking to build a unique association with our teams and the additional investment will help grow the game in exciting new ways. We’re always thinking about innovative ways the NBA can remain competitive in a global marketplace.”

DIGITAL DOINGS

Louis C.K. notified fans via email that there will be no new episodes of his self-financed web series, Horace and Pete. “That was it,” wrote C.K. “I didn’t want to say, in the last email, that it was the last episode. Because I didn’t want you to know, as you watched the episode, that it would be the last one. But yeah, obviously, that was it.” All ten eps of the dramedy starring C.K. and Steve Buscemi are now available for $31.

Daredevil showrunners Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez will be joined by Drew Goddard to run another Marvel superhero series on Netflix, The Defenders, set to start streaming in 2017.

CASTING

Tone Bell (Truth Be Told) landed a role in CBS hybrid comedy pilot My Time/Your Time, from How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.

Frankie Adams (New Zealand’s Shortland Street) has been cast in Syfy space drama The Expanse, based on the best-selling book series.
