IN THE NEWS
Al Jazeera America was shuttered on Tuesday. The news net launched in 2012 with the acquisition of Current TV, but suffered from low viewership and allegations of management bias against women and Israel. In a memo to staff yesterday, net president Kate O’Brian and CEO Al Antsey looked on the positive side. “Al Jazeera America has the most talented and diverse team any media organization could wish for.So, as we enter our final day, we would like to pass on our sincere thanks, appreciation, and respect for your amazing work, and for your commitment to those we cover,” said the execs. “We all know good journalism is critical. It ensures information is reliable, and can be trusted. Good journalism doesn’t mean opinion or spin. It is a responsibility which every media organization should carry with determination and resolve. We are proud to have done so since our first to our final moment on air.”
Gavin Polone, original producer of Gilmore Girls, filed suit against Warner Bros. Television for failing to compensate him for the show’s upcoming four-episode revival on Netflix. “Defendant [makes]…the absurd claim that the Subsequent Episodes are derivative works based on the television series,” alleges the suit. “Defendant also appears to erroneously believe the Subsequent Episodes are not considered a ‘television series’ because they are being produced for Netflix, rather than a traditional broadcast network.” Polone is looking for $195,000.
Looks like season six of MTV’s Teen Wolf won’t include Arden Cho. “Unfortunately it looks like we are wrapped up with Kira’s storyline and she won’t be coming back,” posted the actress on YouTube. Cho joined the drama in season three.
CBS and Time Warner inked a deal that will have March Madness games airing on CBS, TBS, TNT and tru TV through 2032. Price tag: a combined $8.8 billion for any new media platform including ones that haven’t been invented yet.
David Letterman, documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson and The Daily Show With Jon Stewart will be honored at the 75th Peabody ceremony May 21 in New York. The gala will be air as a 90-minute special on Pivot on Monday, June 6 at 8p. In announcements beginning April 19, winners to be known as The Peabody 30 will also be named.
Sarah Palin will be at the NAB show in Las Vegas next week hawking her prospective syndicated court show, Palin Rules (wt), to station groups, reports TVNewsCheck. The outlet also notes the show’s developers are toying with the idea of having the former Alaska governor be addressed as “Governor,” since Palin has never had real-world experience as a judge. Or a lawyer. Warm Springs Productions has teamed with Palin for the project.

NEW & RETURNING SHOWS
New Girl will be back for season six. “Every network comedy should aspire to what Liz Meriwether is achieving in New Girl, with its bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast and emotionally engaging storytelling,” said Fox’s David Madden. “The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was.”
Season two of Secret Lives of Americans has a premiere date: Friday, May 20 on Pivot. First up is a young woman leading a double life, who decides to reveal her identity as a Muslim.
Man Seeking Woman landed a season three renewal from FXX. Total viewers in season two increased 2 percent over season one, to 399,000.
Travel Channel’s Mysteries at the Museum was renewed for season eleven. Things are moving in the right direction – among P25-54, the season ten premiere rated 38 percent higher than the previous season average. But there will be tweaks in the format. “[Host] Don [Wildman] is an incredible story teller so we’ll keep all the great stories that are at the show’s core,” said Courtney White, SVP, programming and production, Travel Channel. “But fans of the series will find that the upcoming season amps up the fun, is a bit lighter and has shorter segments that are easier to digest.”
What other changes are in store for Travel Channel? Courtney White offers a roadmap in the latest Cynsiders.
UPFRONTS UPDATE
Azteca America’s Upfront event Tuesday at NYC’s Gramercy Park Hotel was an elegant affair, celebrating ratings growth (41 percent up among A18-49 and 44 percent among A18-34 in 2015), and new series including adventure reality show Desafio, crossword-style game show Ahora Caigo and drama Rabia, about an outbreak of rabies. “Azteca America enters this upfront season on the heels of delivering its best March ratings in five years across all key demos in primetime,” said president and CEO Manual Abud. “We have made good on all of last year’s promises and our ‘Game On!’ theme underscores our proven counter-programming strategy.”
The network also announced Azteca GlassWorks Studio, an in-house digital content provider devoted specifically to creating multiplatform “stories” for advertisers, and revealed it is incorporating Real-Time Participatory Media technology into its programming, to engage viewers as well as collect data-driven insights into viewer behavior.
But it wasn’t just about the party. “This season, Azteca has taken its upfront into key markets a month early, to jumpstart the conversation with clients and agencies about their needs for 2016-2017,” Craig Geller, EVP of network sales & digital, tells Cynopsis. “Through this new, more consultative approach, we are finding two things. First, the demand for audience, more importantly the Hispanic audience, has never been more robust; and second, connecting to this audience through contextually relevant content is becoming even more important to clients and agencies.”
What are the Upfront prospects? “We’re seeing healthy marketplace growth, and combined with Azteca’s exceptional audience growth, we see great opportunities for Azteca at upfront this year, especially in a market where some of the major players are experiencing audience erosion,” says Geller. “As we continue to innovate our on-screen and cross-screen offerings, we’re becoming an even better partner for our current clients and the new additions entering the market.”
SOCIAL GOOD
Azteca America also expanded a partnership with non-profit Voto Latino that includes a series of PSAs through election day aimed at American Latino voters. Network talent includes hosts of Al Extremo, Veronica del Castillo, Juan Barragan and Gaby Crassus, network news anchor of Hechos Nacional, Roberto Ruiz, Pati Chapoy and her team of Ventaneando correspondents, Atala Sarmiento, Daniel Bisogno, Cesar Casares and Pedro Sola and sports commentator, Luis Garcia, among others.
Discovery Communications is extending its partnership with online volunteer engagement network VolunteerMatch to connect viewers with opportunities to give back in their communities. Campaign kicks off with a PSA airing this week (National Volunteer Week!) across Discovery’s 13 networks. VolunteerMatch technology will be integrated into Discovery Communications’ digital platforms, and DCI’s network of other nonprofit partners will now be connected with VolunteerMatch to extend their reach to potential volunteers.”
CASTING NEWS
The third and final season of ITV’s Broadchurch will include Julie Hesmondhalgh (Happy Valley), Georgina Campbell (Murdered By My Boyfriend), Sarah Parish (Atlantis), Charlie Higson (The Fast Show) and Mark Bazeley (Home Fires). Crime drama airs on BBC America on this side of the pond.
ADVERTISING & BRANDS
Length matters when it comes to videos, according to a new study by IAB in partnership with Millward Brown Digital and Tremor Video. While ten-second mobile video ads had maximum impact on Millennials, 30-second spots were more effective for those age 35-54. Spots tested were for brands in the auto, CPG and quick casual restaurant categories. Best practice advice included ensuring that ads are well-targeted, relevant and enjoyable for consumers sensitive to mobile ad clutter, and making brand logos and product shots large enough to be seen on small mobile screens.
Nielsen unveiled its new Nielsen Marketing Cloud, integrating consumer and media data with marketing activation and analytics applications on a single platform. Nielsen clients currently using the Cloud span food, pet, digital media, broadcast and personal care categories. Count Scripps in. “The In-Flight Analytics application gives us a real-time view into consumer consideration, intent and purchase metrics,” said Michael Meah, director of digital ad products and sales research, Scripps Networks Interactive.“The tool enables us to better optimize our campaigns while they are running, from media allocation to creative versioning, and helps us close the loop, from exposure to sale, delivering on our advertiser’s ultimate goal.”
GLOBAL GOINGS ON
Northern Ireland indie Big Mountain Productions appointed Donna Higgins as head of production and Lucy Wedlock to the newly created position of series producer. Higgins’ recent credits include Web of Lies and Dr. Jeff Rocky Mountain Vet. Wedlock has had roles at Channel 4, ITV, and RTE, among others.
Zee Entertainment Enterprises heads Punit Goenka and Amit Goenka received the highest television honor at MIPTV, the Médaille d’Honneur Award, recognizing executives who have made an exceptional contribution to the international television business.
UK indie 7 Wonder will produce a special for E4, 24 Billion Pound Party People. Show follows nightclub expert Joe Fournier and his team of young entrepreneurs as they travel the globe putting on parties for the international jet set.
DIGITAL DOINGS
AMC is running a social media campaign to promote upcoming series Preacher that will bring pop-up screenings of the drama, based on the comic franchise, to super fans’ hometowns. Fans are invited to visit Twitter or Instagram to post photos, videos or comments about why their hometown deserves an screening using the hashtag #PreacherFanScreenings; AMC will select four towns for a screening ahead of the series premiere Sunday, May 22 at 10p.

RATINGS
FX limited series The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story wrapped as cable’s most-watched new series of 2016. On a Live+7 basis (through eight weeks, first-run), the series is averaging 7.5 million total viewers, 4.0 million A18-49 and 1.9 million A18-34, number six in delivery of A18-34 and eighth in A18-49 among all primetime TV shows (broadcast and cable) in 2016. Time spent viewing adds up to 143.9 hours, or 8.63 billion minutes.
The season two premiere of Starz’ Outlander delivered 1.46 million Live+SD viewers, more than double its series debut (721,000), for a Starz premiere record. Counting re-airings and on demand data so far, the tally stands at 2.68 million viewers. The Girlfriend Experience launched to a strong 1.49 million viewers for premiere night viewership, the best for a new series since Outlander in August 2014.
AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead started its sophomore season (opposite the MTV Movie Awards) the number one show in all of television with 6.7 million total viewers and 3.9 million among A18-49, but down 34 percent in total viewers and 37 percent in the demo versus its August season 1 launch.
