IN THE NEWS

Add CBS to networks shooting for more true crime, with an order for an unscripted anthology series that will feature a new case every season, starting with the 1996 murder of JonBenet Ramsey. The news follows word that NBC is at work on franchise extender Law & Order: True Crime. What thinks Henry Schleiff, group president of Discovery Comm. nets including true crime hub Investigation Discovery? “NBC and CBS are clearly seeing what we’ve known for years – people simply love real-life stories of mystery and suspense,” Schleiff tells Cynopsis.“We welcome anyone who brings attention to the true crime genre – as the #1 network for delivery of women season to date, ID remains the one and only 24/7 home for this incredibly compelling programming.”

Melissa McCarthy will reprise her role as Sookie on Netflix’s Gilmore Girls revival. The Mike & Molly star shared the news on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday. Saying GG had been “near and dear to her heart” but scheduling conflicts had until now prevented her from taking part in the update, McCarthy announced, “They’re going to squeeze me in to do it, and I’m very happy to go back to Stars Hollow.” Filming on the four 90-minute episodes began in February.

And the winner is…Pope Francis. The pontiff is the recipient of the inaugural Telemundo Innovation Award, honoring someone whose pioneering spirit has greatly impacted society. “As the first pope to embrace social media, His Holiness has been able to connect with younger generations and become one of the most influential and innovative religious leaders of our time,” said Borja Perez, SVP, digital & social media, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. “It is an honor for us to celebrate Pope Francis for his innovative approach to redefining religion in a social and digital world.”

What would George do? AMC is using the free-for-all that is the current presidential election season to promote upcoming season three of its Revolutionary War drama, TURN: Washington’s Spies. The multi-platform campaign plays off “the reality of our current fractured political environment by comparing today with the 1770s, when the colonies were split and warring over their relationship with England,” said Linda Schupack, EVP of marketing for AMC and SundanceTV. “The campaign feels appropriate to the period but incredibly fresh as well.”

Gabrielle Carteris, who had been acting president of SAG-AFTRA since Ken Howard’s death on March 23, was elected president by the union’s board of directors. The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum had been EVP since 2012. “Ken was a great union leader, friend and mentor,” said Carteris. “He left big shoes to fill, but with the support of the national board of directors and the membership, I am committed to improving the lives of all SAG-AFTRA members.”

Sleepy Hollow killed off a major character on Friday’s finale. Spoiler alert: Nicole Beharie (Abbie) is off the show. “Alas, Abbie Mills has done all she was meant to do,” said Beharie in a statement. “I’m rooting for my co-stars and crew.” Said the Fox drama’s producers, “We thank Nicole Beharie for bringing Abbie and Sleepy Hollowto life. We are currently discussing Season 4, and should the series be picked up for another season, we have some exciting scenarios and new avenues we want to explore.”

Screenvision Media, in alliance with and KAOS Connect, announced their first Event Cinema offering. I Hope You Dance, a theatrical documentary based on the Grammy-award winning song, premieres Monday, May 16 at 2p and 7p, with encore showings on Monday, May 23 in select theatres nationwide.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Viacom’s integrated marketing and creative content division, Viacom Velocity, announced a dedicated movie studio group in Los Angeles created to work with movie studios on custom branded content campaigns. When it comes to trust between advertisers and media agencies, it’s all about the rebate, according to ID Comms. In its Transparency Survey, the UK-based consulting group found that globally, 70 percent of advertisers and agencies rate how an agency manages rebates as the most important factor in trust level. In the U.S., 67 percent of agency respondents said “how the agency trades with media vendors” and “how the agency manages rebates” were the most important factors.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Liberman Broadcasting filed a complaint with the FCC charging Comcast with blacking out its owned and operated stations in Denver, Houston and Salt Lake City. Liberman, operator of Estrella, claims Comcast is favoring its own, Spanish-language Telemundo and NBC Universo. “They’ve always been dismissive of our ratings and our value in the market,” said company CEO Lenard Liberman during a press conference. Fired back Comcast in a statement, “This purported carriage complaint is just the latest attempt by Liberman to extract carriage and fees from Comcast that are in no way justified.”

CASTING

Tony Roberts (Law & Order) will play Max Kellerman, owner of Catskills resort Kellerman’s, in ABC’s remake of the 1987 film Dirty Dancing. Abigail Breslin (Scream Queens) will have the time of her life as Baby.
