IN THE NEWS
Ben Silverman has landed in the chairman’s seat at Propagate Content, and will serve as co-CEO along with longtime collaborator Howard T. Owens. The company, which is expanding its programming slate to include all genres, received an additional round of investments form A+E Networks and has partnered with Will.i.am and Apple on an unscripted series about app developers. “I have always admired Ben and Howard’s long and lucrative track record of building thriving businesses together,” said A+E Networks CEO Nancy Dubuc.“They are two of Hollywood’s most impressive and prolific producers and we are very much looking forward to our successful partnership as they develop and produce multi-platform content for the global marketplace.” Most recently, Silverman was founder and chairman of Electus, launched in 2009.
TBS late-nighter Conan is heading back to the Big Apple for the first time in six years, for a week of shows from Harlem’s Apollo Theater. The visit, set for October 31-November 3, continues Conan O’Brien‘s travels – he recently journeyed to Korea for a special extended episode airing Saturday, April 9 at 11p and will again be doing a week of shows from Comic-Con International in San Diego this July. Conan airs Monday-Thursday at 11p.
Amazon’s Galaxy Quest revival is on hold. Sam Rockwell, who co-starred in the 1999 sci-fi comedy with Alan Rickman, revealed the news on Chris Hardwick‘s Nerdist podcast. “We were ready to sign up,” said Rockwell. “[Then] Alan Rickman passed away, and Tim Allen wasn’t available – he has [Last Man Standing]- and everybody’s schedule was all weird. It was going to shoot, like, right now. And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That’s a hard void to fill.” Rickman died in January.
Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) is set to host the 2016 Peabody Awards ceremony, celebrating projects in the fields of news, entertainment, documentaries, children’s programming, education, interactive programming, and public service. The show goes on Saturday, May 21, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, televised in a 90-minute special to air on Pivot on Monday, June 6 at 8p.
The constellation of stars scheduled to perform at the 2016 Billboard Latin Music Awards continues to grow. Newly added to the mix are Colombian superstar Juanes, singer, actress and TV host Lucero, urban music singer Yandel, pop singer and La Voz Kids coach Natalia Jimenez, and Marc Anthony. Awards show airs live on Thursday, April 28 at 8p on Telemundo, preceded at 7p by red carpet preshow.
Lisa Simpson is a vegetarian, but fans want writers to take her advocacy for animals one step further. A Care2 petition urging The Simpsons writers to make the character vegan has gathered over 20,000 signatures. “I figured the most popular animated TV show in history already has a vegetarian, why not ask for her to be vegan?” says longtime fan Matthew Hanson, who started the campaign. The show’s late co-creator, Sam Simpson, was vegan. David Mirkin, showrunner during the “Lisa the Vegetarian” episode, is also a vegetarian.
Universal Cable Productions is opening its doors to storytellers looking to create the next great television series in its first pitch fest on April 28. “We’re taking a fresh approach as we mine for new talent and incubate ideas,” said Dawn Olmstead, EVP, Development. “It’s a great opportunity to engage with novice storytellers and give them an entry point to bring their projects to life.” Applicants must complete a submission release form and know a UCP employee or have a direct connection to someone who does business with the studio. Selected entries will be contacted for a 10-minute pitch meeting with Olmstead and her team.
LAFF, the broadcast television network devoted to comedy around-the-clock, has acquired rights to five series from Carsey-Werner Productions. In multi-year licensing agreements announced on Thursday, the network picked up Roseanne (9 seasons), That ‘70s Show (8 seasons), 3rd Rock from the Sun (6 seasons), Grounded for Life (5 seasons) and Cybill (4 seasons). “With comedy-driven cable networks now focused on producing original series for millennials, LAFF is positioned to become the new leading comedy destination for adults 18-49,” said Jonathan Katz, President and CEO of Katz Broadcasting, LAFF’s parent company.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
It’s an interactive talk show meets a build show meets a live comedy show. Spike is teaming with the producers of Talking Dead to launch a live series starring Adam Carolla. Adam Carolla And Friends Build Stuff Live will feature the television, radio and internet personality taking on building projects with celebrity pals in need of his carpentry expertise. The series, which will be broadcast live from Los Angeles and include taped segments illustrating the prep-work that went into each week’s project, debuts in 2017.
UPFRONTS UPDATE
Adding to its history of soapy dramas, Freeform has picked up to series Famous in Love, from Pretty Little Liars executive producer I. Marlene King and starring Bella Thorne. Based on the novel by Rebecca Serle, series follows ordinary college student Paige (Thorne) as she gets her big break after auditioning for the starring role in a Hollywood blockbuster and discovers the highs and lows that come with being the new It Girl in town.
There’s a spinoff on the horizon for Young & Hungry. Currently in development, the untitled series stars Ashley Tisdale as Logan Rawlings, a lesbian magazine editor.
The network heats up the summer with three new dramas. Set in the late 1980s, Dead of Summer, from Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (Once Upon a Time), focuses on the seemingly idyllic Camp Stillwater. (Bows Tuesday, June 28 at 9p.) Guilt, from Lionsgate TV and Thunderbird Films, is a one-hour soapy drama surrounding the murder of a young girl. (Debuts Monday, June 13 at 9p.) Docuseries Cheer Squad follows two-time World Cheerleading Champions on the long road to defending their title. (Premieres Monday, August 22 at 10p.)
Switched at Birth will end its five-season run in 2017 with a special 90minute series finale. The Peabody Award-winning drama delves into racial tensions at Daphne’s college and celebrates its 100th episode with the return of Gilles Marini.
Freeform make its first venture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with new series Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, a superhero love story. The net is also launching original programming in late night with Alice, a half-hour weekly variety-style platform showcasing experimental short-form content.
The network also gave a green light to pilot Issues. Inspired by Cosmopolitan editor in chief Joanna Coles, the scripted show is a glimpse into the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for a global women’s magazine.
SOCIAL GOOD AWARDS
There was no shortage of goodwill in the room at Cynopsis’ second annual Social Good Awards Breakfast in New York City on April 7. Campaigns ranging from exposing trafficking in endangered species, to empowering veterans, to preventing bullying were spotlighted, to an appreciative (and packed) house.
Giving back is in the DNA of many of the brands in attendance. “Social good is good in terms of a corporate reputation, but also you live and you work in these communities and you want to make sure you’re supporting the causes your customers care about,” Irma Arizmendi, Jet Blue’s manager of corporate responsibility, told Cynopsis. “It’s not only important for the community, it’s important for us as a group of brands to get together and stand behind anything that would make a difference in America, in the world.”
FedEx is another company with a long history of giving back. “FedEx cares and has always cared,” said Steve Pacheco, director of advertising & sponsorship marketing. “Anywhere you see the FedEx brand, chances are you’ll see activation of our community and social responsibility message.”
It’s not just about doling out dollars, emphasizes Meredith Hahn, VP, corporate social responsibility at American Express. “We realize just making grants is not going to capitalize on the power of our employees to bring their voice and their energy to causes, as well as our customers, many whom are very interested in causes. We really wrap our arms around how we can find easy ways for them to get involved.”
There’s no denying the feel-good factor. “We’re an ad agency, and there’s not a lot of ad agencies in these kinds of awards,” Kevin Meagher, copywriter Deutsch, told Cynopsis. “But we’ve done work for WATERisLIFE for quite a while and it makes us feel good knowing we’re doing something better for the earth.”
“Disney is driven by storytelling and technology – and we know that kids introduced to computer science today will become the innovators and storytellers of tomorrow,” said James Pitaro, chairman of Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media. “We are honored to have partnered with Code.org to introduce millions of students to coding, which is becoming one of the most important languages of their generation.”
But sometimes, doing something for the greater good actually helps the bottom line. Notes Pete Borum, CEO of Reelio, “When a brand mixes their call to action with something that is cause related, they may get a two and a half times lift. It really does have a lot of impact on business metrics to integrate a message with a cause-related call to action.”
At the end of the day, “We’re all striving to do good work, and anytime we can do good in television, it’s a great thing,” said Erich Archer, executive director, Cape Ann Television. “It’s a very powerful medium.”
Proud to salute those in the industry doing such a stellar job raising awareness and inspiring action, Cynopsis got into the act with a contribution to Red Nose Day.
