ABC’s World News Tonight With David Muir broke the 288-week total viewer winning streak of NBC Nightly News, with 7.99 million viewers versus NBC’s 7.91 million. ABC also won in the A18-49 and A25-54 demos, its first trifecta in over seven years. NBC was quick to voice support for its anchor, who took over when Brian Williams was suspended in February for misreporting events: “Lester Holt has led NBC Nightly News to great success over the past two months, and we continue to be pleased with his strong performance during this time.”

IN THE NEWS

Ruling on a complaint by Comcast, The Council of Better Business Bureau’s National Advertising Division said DirecTV should discontinue certain claims made in a series of TV commercials featuring Rob Lowe. Comcast challenged statements in the ads saying DirecTV has 99% signal reliability, and its customers get the industry’s “best picture quality and sound.” DirecTV is appealing NAD’s findings, noting that the Lowe ads “are so outlandish and exaggerated that no reasonable consumer would believe that the statements being made by [Lowe’s] alter-ego characters are comparative or need to be substantiated.”

Vampire Diaries fan favorite Nina Dobrev is leaving the CW drama. “I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure,” the actress announced via Instagram. Said Vampire exec producer Julie Plec, “Nina is excited to spread her wings, get some rest, travel the world and also take it by storm, and we support her a thousand-fold.” Michael Trevino is also leaving the show, to do a pilot. As for the plotline, “Fasten you seatbelts,” Dobrev told her fans. “If you think you know what’s coming, you don’t.”

Vampire Diaries fans are lamenting the departure of Nina Dobrev. Which series stars are irreplaceable? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

In 1990, the median age of viewers was 41, versus 33 for the population. But all is not lost – despite the chatter about Millennials, 75 percent of brands’ sales efforts are focused on consumers age 35 and up.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Seven months into their new overall deal with CBS Television Studios, The Good Wife creators Robert and Michelle King launched their own King Size Productions. Liz Glotzer, formerly president of Castle Rock Entertainment, will oversee the company. "We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Liz,” said the Kings. “Not only does she have spectacular taste, she has years of experience working with wonderful feature writers – many of whom are now looking to explore TV.”

Entertainment One Television struck a first-look deal with veteran television and film producers Mark Ford and Kevin Lopez and their Creature Films banner. Under the terms of the pact, Ford and Lopez will develop and produce unscripted programming with eOne.

UPFRONTS UPDATE

At a press breakfast at NYC’s Rainbow Room on Tuesday (waffles, anyone?), USA Network announced a packed summer slate, more content from live action entertainment company WWE and two reality show spin-offs in development.

First the spin-offs, inspired by Chrisley Knows Best. A late night talk show hosted by Todd Chrisley is in development, along with a pilot produced by series partner Maverick TV focused on the family. “Fans can’t get enough of the Chrisleys,” said Jackie de Crinis, EVP of Original Programming. “We’re excited to give viewers an even bigger dose of this entertaining, unpredictable and lovable family.” Chrisley Knows Best returns for season three Tuesday, June 2 at 9p.

Also rolling out this summer are five original dramas, another reality series and a comedy. New hacker drama Mr. Robot and thriller Complications bow in June, along with Chrisley Knows Best, season seven of Royal Pains, season five of Suits, the return of season three of Graceland and competition reality show WWE Tough Enough. August brings season two of comedy Playing House.

The net’s also making room for more WWE programming, with SmackDown (currently airing Fridays on Syfy) joining the Thursday lineup in 1Q16. “WWE consistently delivers one of the largest and most socially engaged live audiences in entertainment and we’re excited to expand our long-standing relationship and be the true cable home for the WWE fan,” said USA Network President Chris McCumber. Monday Night Raw stands as the most-watched, regularly scheduled year-round program on cable, airing a live three-hour block every Monday. McCumber also announced, to cheers, that after 35 years the Stanley Cup, in association with NBC, would be returning to the net.

On the development slate: nine scripted drama projects, from Charlize Theron, Rob Reiner, Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), Eric Kripke (Supernatural), Aaron Korsh (Suits) and Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), among others, and an alternative project with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

FUN OF YOUR BUSINESS

To launch our new Wednesday editorial section we asked our readers "What is the App you can’t live without and why?" We received some really great responses. A number of our friends from the West Coast listed the navigation app WAZE. Good to know for our next trip out to LA. Here are some others…

What’s the app you can’t live without and why?

Mint.com – "Mint.com. It’s a finance and checking app. It keeps daily track of how much you spend." Christian Slater, star of USA Network’s Mr. Robot

Dark Sky – "It’s my favorite weather app. Our show is based in Chicago, need I say more about shooting in weather?" Chris Lamson, Sr Consulting Producer, Steve Harvey

YELP – "I could not live without my Yelp! app. Living in LA is great for any foodie, but there’s also an abundance of restaurants so it’s really hard to choose which one to try next. If I’m going to invest in a meal, I want it to be amazing. If a restaurant doesn’t have at least 4 stars on Yelp, then I’m not interested!" Rachel Nearen, Sales Planner, HGTV | DIY | Scripps Networks Interactive

Want to join the fun and have a chance to be listed in next week’s issue? Then tell us… "How do you show your fun side around the office?" Please send your responses to FOYB.Cynopsis@gmail.com
