UPFRONTS UPDATE

It’s not just about Christmas at Hallmark and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. “We continue to build franchises and events that sync up with the Hallmark brand and retail calendar,” said Bill Abbott, president and CEO of Crown Media Family Networks, to an audience gathered at NYC’s Rainbow Room. “Rather than rely on one hit show or one franchise, we have created a 365-day experience.” Talent on hand included actors Lori Loughlin, Jack Wagner and James Denton, and as well as Kitten Bowl host Beth Stern and announcer Mary Carillo.

Coming up in 2017 is Hallmark’s fourth Kitten Bowl, and two weeks of Valentine’s-themed programming. “June Weddings” and “Summer Nights” come in the summer, with new Hallmark series Chesapeake Shores. That’s along with plenty of Christmas fare, of course, including a broadcast of the annual Christmas tree lighting in Washington, D.C.

What’s the pitch to advertisers? “Crown Media Family Networks experienced another year of growth in 2015, with Hallmark Channel up 9% and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries up 31% year to year among Women 25-54, while cable and broadcast were down, 6% and 8%, respectively,” EVP, ad sales Ed Georger tells Cynopsis. “Hallmark Channel is the undisputed top performer in the key fourth quarter holiday season, delivering more W25-54 viewers – no exceptions – than any other network with our 24/7 seasonal programming.” But it’s not just about the numbers. “Our ‘event’ strategy throughout the year provides relevant content aligned with marketer’s seasonal focus,” adds Georger. The key to success for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, the fastest growing mid-sized cable network, projected to be in 70 million households by year end, reports Georger, is “a more focused brand identity and more original content. The channel has quickly moved into the mid-tier competitive set and consistently delivers an engaged audience with classic a unique mix of dramatic films and suspenseful ‘who done it’ mystery movie franchises. Both channels are district and exclusive in their programming, yet both benefit from the quality and legacy of the Hallmark Brand.”

Just for fun: Some of the networks’ brightest stars revealed their can’t-miss shows.
Alison Sweeney (Murder, She Baked): “I love Better Call Saul, which is from last year but it’s my new favorite.”
Lori Loughlin: “Fuller House or Grandfathered. Love them both!”
Beth Stern: “Kitten Bowl!”

CASTING NEWS

Angela Kinsey (The Office) and Steve Little (The Grinder) join Netflix comedy Haters Back Off, based on YouTube character Miranda Sings (Colleen Ballinger-Evans).

J.D. Evermore was promoted from recurring to series regular for the fourth and final season of SundanceTV’s Rectify.

ADVERTISING

Cablevision Media Sales announced a tool to help political advertisers reach voters, offering granular, actionable insights to target desired audiences based on party affiliation. Example, please? “The CMS Political Insights Toolis designed to help political media planners reach audiences in places on the dial that may not be obvious,” Jennifer Koester, SVP of Advanced Advertising and Data Analytics, tells Cynopsis. “If a PAC is looking to increase voter turn out among non-registered voters in a certain region of the New York DMA, the tool helps to find those networks and programs that over-index with this audience, such as Hispanic networks that may not have otherwise been considered.”

The Africa Channel is on a roll, retaining T Media Sales to oversee ad sales focused on programming sponsorships and direct response sales. “The line-up of lifestyle, travel and cultural series on this truly beautiful network delivers a unique audience that advertisers want to reach,” said T-Media’s Lee Warpack. The net also enlisted HotHouse Media to handle affiliate sales and distribution.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Endemol Shine Group factual thriller Hunted has been sold to Russia’s NTV Channel. Social experiment will be produced by Weit Media, Endemol’s production company in Russia. Germany’s Endemol Shine acquired Armoza Formats docu-reality The Foodies, the show’s first deal.

Keshet International sold its Israeli series The Baker and The Beauty and Milk & Honey to Channel 4’s recently launched foreign language drama on demand service, Walter Presents. Both dramas will broadcast on the UK service later this year. Keshet game show BOOM! has been licensed by Endemol Shine Italy and will be produced for the Discovery Group’s channel NOVE.

RLJ Entertainment streaming service Acorn has secured U.S. rights to The Secret Agent from Content Television. Spy drama makes its broadcast debut later this year on UK’s BBC One.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Ride Television Network and CenturyLink struck a deal to distribute the equestrian lifestyle channel to CenturyLink customers.  Ride TV, which launched in 2014, will join the Prism Sports Plus package on April 19.

Litton Entertainment and TVF International have entered into an agreement that will have TVF distribute hidden camera show Chicken Soup for the Soul’s Hidden Heroes to all markets globally outside of the U.S. Series targets teens.
