South African comedian Trevor Noah will take over as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show when Jon Stewart exits. Calling Noah, who joined the late nighter as a correspondent in December, “wickedly funny,” net president Michele Ganeless said, “We set out to find a fresh voice who can speak to our audience with a keen take on the events of the day, and we found that in Trevor. He has a huge international following and is poised to explode here in America.” Said Stewart, who has not announced a departure date, “I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor….In fact, I may rejoin as a correspondent just to be a part of it!”
IN THE NEWS
Nat Geo scored the highest total viewership in network history with Sunday’s premiere of Killing Jesus. The three-hour special, based on the book by Bill O’Reilly, drew 3.7 million viewers; its 2.8 HH rating was the second-highest ever. The show encores on Fox News Friday, April 3 at 8p and Easter Sunday, April 5 at 8p.
Anne Sweeney’s next act includes sitting on the board of directors at Netflix. Sweeney, until January co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney-ABC Television, joins Brad Smith, EVP and general counsel, legal and corporate affairs at Microsoft Corp. on the nine-member board. “We look forward to benefiting from Brad and Anne’s perspective as we continue to build our global Internet TV network,” said CEO Reed Hastings.
NBC’s next live musical event will be The Wiz. Sound of Music and Peter Pan producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron return for the production, airing Thursday, December 3. But that’s just the beginning. Produced by Cirque du Soleil’s new stage theatrical division, the show will have a Broadway revival for the 2016-17 season. The move to Broadway is “a natural next step for our live musical events,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt.
Bill O’Reilly barely had time to celebrate Nat Geo’s Killing Jesus ratings win when the Fox News host, who has been accused of embellishing reporting during the Falklands War, faced a challenge from a former CBS colleague. Of O’Reilly’s account that he rescued a bleeding cameraman from a skirmish, Ignacio Medrano-Carbo told Mother Jones, “No one I know of who worked with me in Buenos Aires during the Falkland War ever heard of any CBS crew member getting beat or hurt.” Responded O’Reilly, “This is nothing more than another coordinated attack which predictably comes on the heels of my appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman.”
NBC Entertainment teamed with Google to create an online companion site for drama series American Odyssey, premiering Sunday, April 5 at 10p. Fans can visit cities from the show via Google maps, and view photos, documents and other content available only on “Explore American Odyssey.”
TLC brings its traveling “Say Yes to the Prom” event to Discovery’s Silver Spring, MD headquarters today. The program, designed to build self-confidence in young women, offers mentoring, prom dress shopping and makeovers, as well as a video message from First Lady Michelle Obama. And for the first time, guys get an invite, too – they’ll leave with stylish tuxedos.
Downton Abbey writer and creator Julian Fellows will receive the 2015 International Emmy Founders Award at the International Academy of Television Arts & Science’s NYC gala on Monday, November 15. “Julian has brought a career’s worth of experience and ideas to this landmark television series and we look forwarding to welcoming him and members of the Downton Abbey cast at our Gala,” said Bruce L. Paisner, Academy president and CEO.

UPFRONTS UPDATE
Housewives mixed with execs and the press at an elegant lunch in midtown Manhattan’s Andaz Hotel on Monday, March 30, the setting for a first look at programming on NBCUniversal Lifestyle nets Bravo, Esquire and Oxygen. And there was plenty to see.
Bravo’s slate included a total of over 40 original series focusing on food, fashion, beauty, design and pop culture.Getting the green light: NeNe and Kim: The Road to Riches, Apres Ski, Fit Club, My Fab 40th, Mother Funders, Tour Group and Recipe for Deception, as well as expanding franchises with Below Deck Mediterranean, Ladies of Dallas and Married to Medicine Houston.
New season orders went to series including Ladies of London for a sophomore run, Don’t Be Tardy… for season four, Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles season eight and Manzo’d with Children season two, joining Bravo’s first scripted series, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, recently picked up for a second season. More scripted is on the way with the net’s first half-hour comedy series, Odd Mom Out, premiering with back-to-back episodes on Monday, June 8 at 10p.
“Bravo continues to super-serve the most educated, affluent, engaged and loyal audience with our original content on all platforms,” said Frances Berwick, president, Lifestyle Networks, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.“We are excited to launch these new unscripted and scripted series and believe the new slate will deliver the same high-quality and viewingbenefits, but with a broader lens to drive even more ‘affluencers’ to view as well as engage socially.”
Esquire, launched in 2013, boasted it is surpassing onset goals, with a spike in ratings that’s made it the second-fastest-growing entertainment cable network, and number two cable net for affluent and educated Men 18-49. How do they anticipate keeping the upward trajectory going? With a lineup that includes five original series: Going Deep with David Rees, Somm (wt), The Agent, United States of Burgers and Comedians of LA, a series produced in partnership with Oxygen that uses one cast to provide two “his and hers” points of view. “As a young network, we’re constantly on the look-out for new and innovative ways to deliver quality programming – Comedians of L.A., delivers a groundbreaking concept not only in the way it is produced and presented, but also in the unique and transparent perspective it will give viewers,” said Matt Hanna, SVP of original programming.
The distaff side of that co-production, Living With Funny, will run on Oxygen, during the same time period as Comedians. But it’s just one of eight new series premiering on the network targeting Millennial women, including Douglas Family Gold, The Hustle, Pretty.Strong., Player Gets Played, Boss Nails, the third installment of Preachers of Atlanta and half-hour syndicated comedic show Crazy Talk, coming in the fall from NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution.
Oxygen’s highest-rated freshman series in 2014, Sisterhood of Hip Hop has been picked up for season two, with all five cast members returning, and business mavens Randi Zuckerberg, Ido Leffler, Sarah Prevette and Lauren Maillian will serve as mentors and investors on Time to Quit Your Day Job (previously The Investors Club).
“Oxygen is unveiling our most ambitious slate, embracing the new brand filter with bold and optimistic programming for young multicultural women,” said Berwick. “We are excited to be partnering with leading producers to create content that cuts through the clutter, connects our millennial viewers to the things that matter to them, with depictions of real people living life on their own terms.”
