CYNOPSISSPORTS
03.30.16

Good morning. It’s Wednesday March 30, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Olympics topped the $1 billion mark in national ad sales for its coverage of the 2016 Olympic Games this August. The Summer event is on pace to lock in the most national advertising sales ever for an Olympic Games and the most by any network for any media event in US history. The dollar figure includes national broadcast, cable and digital sales and comes about four months earlier than it did for the 2012 London Olympics.

“The market is very healthy and bullish on the Olympics as evidenced by the fact that we’ve surpassed the $1 Billion mark four months ahead of London,” said Seth Winter, EVP, Advertising Sales, NBC Sports Group. “Advertisers know that integrating their brands in front of Olympic viewers is good for their businesses. We continue to expect to set the Olympic record for national ad sales.” He added that “Some of the most valuable inventory is gone; but, there is still some primetime availability on the network as well as cable-channel inventory.”

TOP STORY

The Final Four is coming to VR. NCAA March Madness Live, managed by Turner Sports in partnership with CBS, Capital One and Oculus, will offer fans live game coverage of the NCAA Final Four Semifinals as well as the National Championship in virtual reality for the first time. The stream will offer 180-degree that will be produced in collaboration with VOKE and available via a new virtual reality version of the NCAA March Madness Live app in the Oculus Store. Viewers will be able to access the game from a courtside perspective as well as have access to a virtual scoreboard with live stats.

Meanwhile, the NCAA unveiled announcers for TNT and truTV’s Team Stream by Bleacher Report team-specific presentations for the Final Four and National Championship. The Oklahoma-themed telecast on TNT at 6p will see Chad McKee handle play-by-play with Eduardo Najera as analyst and Jessica Coody as reporter. The noon-1:30p show will soon feature anchor David Lloyd from ESPN’s Bristol studios while co-anchor Cari Champion will be seen from its LA Production Center with the move designed to expand the pool of in-studio guests and analysts. “This is a move we’ve been planning for some time to increase the scope of what SportsCenter can do,” said Scott Clark, ESPN coordinating producer, who oversees the daytime editions of SportsCenter. “It’s going to be a new, different look for the show, as well as a bigger feel, and will continue to evolve what SportsCenter.

Fight Network locked in a deal with TNA Entertainment for a content partnership that will see Fight Network’s OTT app become the global home for TNA Wrestling content starting in the second quarter of this year. Fight Network and TNA Wrestling will collaborate to produce digital content and will also partner on cross-promotion and joint sales efforts in global markets, as well as in the U.S. and Canada. “Our enhanced partnership with Fight Network to deliver new and archived content through linear and over-the-top platforms, as well as to bring TNA programming to new and emerging markets around the world, is a significant step in the execution of TNA’s strategic plan,” said TNA president Dixie Carter. “Fans are hungry for easily accessible content they can view on demand, and come this summer, the action of TNA Impact Wrestling will be more available than ever.”

Telemundo landed the first one-on-one interview with FIFA’s Gianni Infantino, and will air portions throughout the week on Un Nuevo Dia, as well as Al Rojo Vivo, Noticiero Telemundo and Titulares y Mas. Avid locked in a deal with WWE to provide a new production workflow powered by the Avid MediaCentral Platform. Avid stated that WWE chose “to protect its investment in the new workflow solution, as well as its media assets by implementing a back-up system so it can continue to produce content in the event of an unexpected disruption,” citing a scalable, efficient, and integrated workflow to generate and manage content. “We can now edit and distribute all of our content seamlessly within the Avid environment,” said Mike Grossman, Senior VP of Television Operations at WWE. “With a centralized system, we can manage multiple production groups and repurpose content much more easily. Avid’s integration with third-party applications means that the system can grow with us in the future, and the new back-up system mitigates the risk of disasters affecting our production and revenue.”

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

Sportradar locked in a strategic partnership with the WWP Group and invested into WWP’s subsidiary D/UNIT, a digital communication and marketing agency in the sports sector, based in Munich. The deal will enable D/UNIT to leverage proprietary sports content to create unique sponsorship solutions. “As a well-established player in the international sport business, WWP recognizes digital activation will become ever more important for brands and fans. Therefore, we have developed D/UNIT into a potent strategic and operational extension of our business, which has already showcased and delivered a range of innovative campaigns in a highly competitive market” says Philipp Radel, CEO of WWP Group. “Therefore, we are very excited to welcome Sportradar as our new partner. Their portfolio of powerful sports content solutions paired with our intimate knowledge of the digital sponsorship business will ensure fully-tailored and innovative solutions which our customers will benefit greatly from.”

Degree Deodorant will be leveraging the NCAA Men’s Final Four to conduct a series of real-time fan movement studies in partnership with the NCAA this weekend. The brand will use Lightwave, a bioanalytics technology, to measure and analyze “everything from the reaction of a buzzer beater to the results of the crowd moving in unison during "The Wave," at the National Semifinals” on Saturday as well as at the National Championship Game on Monday. The data will be used to provide Degree further insight into human motion with Lightwave deploying connected sensor devices throughout NRG Stadium, and equipping select fans withwearable devices.

Meanwhile, NCAA Corporate Partner LG Electronics USA is tackling the NCAA Men’s Final Four Weekend with “Do Game Day Right,” featuring interactive experiences at two events: the "Tip Off Tailgate Presented by Infiniti" and Final Four Fan Fest presented by Capitol One. SOCIAL MEDIA

Rob Gronkowski joined Instagram with a bang, as he became the first athlete in the world to utilize Instagram’s new 60-second video option. The Patriot uploaded a 60-second video showcasing what he’s been doing during the off-season under the handle @GRONK.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Peter King inked a multiyear contract extension that will keep him with Sports Illustrated Group, and will continue in his role spearheading the editorial direction for TheMMQB.com. "We are thrilled that Peter will continue in his role as Editor of TheMMQB.com, which has quickly become the gold standard for NFL coverage," said Paul Fichtenbaum, Sports Illustrated Group Editor. "Peter and his team of reporters and editors are unique multi-platform storytellers who inform and entertain millions of people each month."

ESPORTS/GAMING

MotoGP is launching a Fan World Championship series as an eSports play. The tournament will be held in conjunction with the release of MotoGP Championship Quest, the official MotoGP mobile racing game. The Fan World Championship marks a world first in eSports and targets the massively growing global mobile phone market which is expected to reach 2.35 billion units in 2019. "We didn’t want the Fan World Championship™ to be a popularity contest because if it were, the riders leading the live championship would win every week," said Mark De Simone, CEO of WePlay Media, developer of the mobile game. "Instead we wanted to make it about the fan’s contribution to their rider, effectively democratizing the MotoGP field and focusing on fan engagement."
