Comedian and actor Garry Shandling died suddenly Thursday, March 24 in LA. He was 66. According to reports, Shandling appeared healthy and talking with people yesterday morning, but was taken to the hospital after a 911 call and passed away there later in the day. Shandling, who started as a writer before becoming a stand-up comedy star in the 1980s, was best known for HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show (1992-1998), as well as for being a frequent fill-in for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show.
CBS leads the nominations for the 43rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, announced yesterday by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. CBS’ 77 noms including 27 for The Young and the Restless – place the network well ahead of the pack. ABC’s General Hospital garnered 24 nominations. National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences president Bob Mauro also shared news that the awards will not be televised this year, due to production costs.
Entertainment One has acquired for $23 million a 65 percent stake in Renegade 83, the unscripted production company helmed by David Garfinkle and Jay Renfroe. The shop is behind Discovery Channel show Naked & Afraid. Garfinkle and Renfroe contining to lead the company as co-presidents.
U.S. pay-TV households dipped below the 100 million benchmark during the fourth quarter, according to Nielsen, falling to 99.44 million. In its quarterly Total Audience Report, Nielsen said there were just more than 100 million US pay-TV subs in the Q3 2015, and 100.93 million in Q4 2014. Live linear TV viewing declined 1.2 percent to 4 hours, 27 minutes a day, on average, which actually marked a deceleration. It dropped 5.6 percent year over year in the fourth quarter of 2014. Time-shifted TV usage grew from an average of 32 minutes a day per viewer from 31 minutes a year ago.
Charter Communications is in talks with Amazon to join Comcast in the electronic retail giant’s new cable services storefront. According to the Wall Street Journal, a Charter rep said MSO is in talks but has not yet decided on whether to pursue the relationship. Comcast is all-in on the Amazon Cable Store, where it will offer 30-plus Xfinity products.
The chorus of disapproval for a Georgia bill that would allow faith-based groups to discriminate based on sexuality continues to swell. Will it be loud enough to reach the ears of Gov. Nathan Deal, who is considering signing the legislation into law? A day after Disney said it would take its business out of the state and AMC and Viacom voiced opposition, Comcast NBCU, Discovery Communications, MGM, Time Warner and Harvey and Bob Weinstein urged the Republican official to put the kibosh the Free Exercise Protection Act. “At Time Warner, diversity in all its forms is core to our value system and to the success of our business,” the parent company of HBO, CNN, Turner and more said in a statement Thursday. “We strongly oppose the discriminatory language and intent of Georgia’s pending religious liberty bill, which clearly violates the values and principles of inclusion and the ability of all people to live and work free from discrimination.”
