IN THE NEWS
SAG-AFTRA president Ken Howard died Wednesday at age 71. Perhaps best known for his role in sports drama The White Shadow (1978-81), Howard earned an Emmy Award for his performance in HBO’s Grey Gardens, and a Tony for Child’s Play. Howard was elected president of SAG in 2009 and 2011, eventually becoming president of the merged unions. No cause of death was announced.
Just in time for Upfronts, Discovery Communications launched new marketing effort for advertisers, with tools that can be customized and combined. “As consumers change the way they view content, it is important for us to evolve our advertising model,” Sharon O’Sullivan, EVP, client and brand partnerships, tells Cynopsis.“Our new One Discovery offering will allow us to put clients’ brands in the center of every consumer touch point, utilizing all resources, technology and data to effectively connect their brands with our fans.” In the One Discovery toolbox: data management and analytics platform Discovery Engage; TV Everywhere platform Discovery Go, which will allow clients to integrate ads into content on any device in the U.S.; Millennial-luring web-native networks; virtual reality experiences, and an in-house production team to produce branded entertainment.
The LA Rams will be the subject of HBO training camp docu-series Hard Knocks for season 11, as they return to the City of Angels after playing in St. Louis since 1995. Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) will narrate when the five-episode run kicks off August 9 at 10p. Chances are the show won’t be a distraction for the team the past six teams to participate equaled or improved their regular season record, and four went to the playoffs.
Nielsen clients will have access to brand-level TV connected device data starting April 25, as well as information about device type. The measurement company also announced its new Total Use of Television metric, adding connected TV device usage to traditional usage. “The ability to know how many consumers use which brands of TV-connected devices, for how often and for how long, is critical for clients who need to make informed content decisions and understand their total audience,” said Sara Erichson, EVP of client solutions and audience insights for Nielsen.
Netflix tops Ampere Analysis’ entertainment brand power list, with subscribers in the U.S. and UK most likely to recommend the service to others. But while UK broadcasters like the BBC and ITV also rank highly, U.S. viewers are more likely to promote pay-TV channels like HBO and Starz. Scores are based on people who actually use the service.
Dog lovers can choose from among 174 nominees at www.herodogawards.org, and vote for their favorite canines in eight categories for the 2016 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards. Top pooches get the red carpet treatment during a two-hour special on Hallmark Channel this fall.
