Tonight’s Finales:
ID: Vanity Fair Confidential at 9p

IN THE NEWS

DISH Networks is holding onto NBCUniversal channels for the time being, despite Sunday’s contract negotiation deadline. A notice requesting arbitration for the carriage dispute puts into place a 10-day cooling off period, per the FCC. Responded NBCUni, “We are glad DISH recognizes the great value that NBCUniversal provides their subscribers and is committed to reaching a new distribution agreement.” Dish customers were at risk of losing access to NBCUniveral-owned NBC and Telemundo affiliates in markets including New York, LA, Chicago and Miami, and cable channels including USA, Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC and Syfy.

Fox News fired back after Donald Trump continued his attacks on Megyn Kelly. On Friday, Trump tweeted, “Always a hit on Trump! She is sick, & the most overrated person on tv.” Responded the network, “Donald Trump’s vitriolic attacks against Megyn Kelly and his extreme, sick obsession with her is beneath the dignity of a presidential candidate who wants to occupy the highest office in the land. Megyn is an exemplary journalist and one of the leading anchors in America – we’re extremely proud of her phenomenal work and continue to fully support her throughout every day of Trump’s endless barrage of crude and sexist verbal assaults.” Tweeted Trump in response, “If crazy @megynkelly didn’t cover me so much on her terrible show, her ratings would totally tank.”

CNN is interviewing all five presidential candidates tonight (March 21). Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer will talk to Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and John Kasich from Washington, D.C., while Bernie Sanders will speak from the campaign trail. Fox News canceled its GOP debate, scheduled for tonight in Salt Lake City, after Trump said he wouldn’t show because of a speaking commitment in the capital.

While Freeform’s Switched at Birth will be back for a fifth and final season, fans had better not hold their breath waiting for the return of Bay and Daphne. The drama, which ended its fourth season in October, won’t be back until 2017. “It’s a bummer but it is what it is,” tweeted series creator Lizzy Weiss on Friday night.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

A+E Networks format Seven Year Switch debuted to a number one ranking in its time slot in total viewers, A16-39, A18-49 and A25-54 for Australia’s Seven Network. In its first season in the U.S. on FYI the show grew 35 percent from the premiere to finale.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Viacom and comScore announced a multi-year partnership on Friday for cross-platform measurement. Viacom will have “deep access” to comScore’s measurement and data tools, to be translated by Vantage advertising products and used as currency for transacting. “This partnership with comScore marks a fundamental watershed moment in the business of television,” said Bryson Gordon, SVP Data Strategy, Viacom. “This revolution in targeting, currency and measurement is the equivalent of shifting from black and white to color.”

Total TV advertising rose 5 percent in February versus February 2015, reports Standard Media Index. Biggest gainer was syndication (up 15 percent), followed by national cable (up 11 percent) and local cable (up 9 percent). The picture isn’t as rosy for broadcast, with national TV down 2 percent and spot up just 1 percent.

Make ‘em cry: When programming elicits a strong emotional reaction from viewers, those viewers are more likely to recall the ads within it, according to a new study from Twitter, Starcom and Canvs. “Not all TV audiences are created equal: we’ve long believed that viewers respond differently to commercials depending on how they feel about what they’re watching,” said Heather O’Shea, Twitter’s global agency research and data strategy lead, in a blog post. “When it comes to getting a pulse on people’s emotional reactions during live TV, now we know that Twitter can drive even stronger results for brands.” According to the study, Twitter users are 48 percent more likely to recall an ad that airs during an intense show.
