CYNOPSISSPORTS
03.19.15

Good morning. It’s Thursday March 19, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

FOX Sports is hitting 20 years carrying MLB nationally and announced its coverage plans for the landmark 2015 season with a combined minimum of 65 games between the FOX broadcast network and FOX Sports 1. The cable channel will showcase 38 games this year, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader on April 11 pitting the Red Sox/Yankees at 1p and Royals/Angels at 9p. Meanwhile, the broadcast channel serves up a maximum of 31 games over 11 windows during the regular season. Coverage starts with regionalized broadcasts of three games at 7p on May 23. Meanwhile, FOX Deportes slated 26 national broadcasts during the 2015 season. Of course, the company will also feature the All-Star Game, Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series this year, with all games streamed live on FOX Sports GO.

ON THE AIR

Another notch in PBC’s belt, as Premier Boxing Champions locked in a deal with ESPN. The multi-year agreement will see 12 two-hour annual live PBC on ESPN telecasts scheduled with the first taking place on July 11 at 9p via ESPN and ESPN Deportes. The deal will see ESPN telecasts air live in primetime while ABC broadcasts will air on Saturday afternoons. The addition will mark an end to ESPN staple Friday Night Fights, which will now offer its last show on May 22. Blow-by-blow commentator Joe Tessitore and analyst Teddy Atlas will call the fights ringside on ESPN and ABC.

Speaking of which, Spike TV announced plans to replay its inaugural “Premier Boxing Champions” event from last week on Friday night at 9p.

With its new Stanley Cup Playoffs campaign underway, NBC Sports has revealed that USA Network is getting in the game for the company’s postseason plans. The first promo ran last night on NBCSN, showcasing that games will run across NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, USA and NHL Network. The channel last carried the NHL during the 1984-85 season.

Tournament updates: Turner Sports and CBS Sports added Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Buzz Williams to serve as guest studio analyst for the 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Williams joins host Matt Winer and analysts Mateen Cleaves and Seth Davis for NCAA Tournament second round coverage today and Friday from Turner Studios in Atlanta.  Second round game coverage begins today.

CBS Sports Network recruited Wake Forest head coach Danny Manning to its own roster, where he will be a guest analyst for tournament coverage today at 10p, joining host Brent Stover, analyst Pete Gillen and insider Gary Parrish.

FOX Sports reports that its UEFA Champions League coverage of Tuesday’s Arsenal victory drew 472,000 viewers to FOX Sports 1. The A18-49 demo grew 125% over the match on the corresponding day last year to net 304,000 viewers. Right after the game, America’s Pregame posted 239,000 viewers to become the most-watched edition of APG in its history.

IMG struck a deal with GolTV to carry the William Hill Scottish Cup on the bilingual soccer network. The channel will offer the 2015 semi-finals on April 18th with the final match on May 30th. The 2016 coverage will commence in February and will include all tournament matches.

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

FOX Sports continued to build up its FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 domain via a new promo that debuted last night on hit series Empire. The cross-promotion is the latest example of the slate of company-wide collaborations designed to promote the June tournament. The spot showcases a music video featuring “the triumph, determination and grit of the U.S. Women’s National Team overcoming challenges to rise to top of their game,” scored with music from the show, i.e. the song "Conqueror" featuring Estelle and Jussie Smollett. The spot will now run on FOX Sports 1 for three weeks.

Hollywood based entertainment branding and marketing innovations agency Troika debuted the latest of its “What If” brand film installments. The thought-provoking video looks at how sports brands are harnessing the shifting sports media landscape and technology to create new business opportunities and enriched fan experiences. Have a gander here.

On the local scene, MLS’ Colorado Rapids struck a deal with Transamerica that will feature the financial services company’s logo on the Rapids uniforms throughout the 2015 and 2016 seasons. The agreement was brokered by Denver-based Impression Sports & Entertainment. The team will debut jerseys featuring Transamerica in their home opener against New York City FC on Saturday.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Twitter shared its projections for March Madness, including a predictor for every game of the NCAA Tournament via Twitter mentions based on conversation around each team winning since Selection Sunday. Kentucky, Duke, Wisconsin and Virginia would appear to be headed to the Final Four based on users. You can find and follow all 68 teams on Twitter here.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

WWE is forming a new tagteam with daily fantasy sports company DraftKings Inc. The alliance will offer one fan a chance to win “the ultimate trip” to SummerSlam via a promotion through select professional basketball contests on DraftKings. The company will serve as a promotional partner for SummerSlam, with integration within the event’s telecast on WWE Network and pay-per-view, and custom digital and social media activations across WWE’s global platforms.

SportsBlog is launching Pros Marching In Madness, a special multimedia content hub of current and former NBA, NFL and WNBA pro athletes sharing their insight, opinions and predictions on the current Tournament, as well as a look back on their time playing in the NCAA’s. Contributing pro bloggers include NBA legends Sam Perkins, Spencer Haywood, Dale Ellis, Jim McIlvaine and Jerrod Mustaf; NBA players Courtney Lee of the Memphis Grizzlies and more.

ROSTER MOVES

Troika hired a Live Action Director and their sixth Creative Director Richard D’Alessio. Richard has worked with advertising clients in the US and around the world with work that includes: ABC’s Secrets & Lies, Lifetime’s Witches of East End and Lizzie Borden Took an Ax, Showtime’s Shameless, and SyFy’s The Magicians.

THE MAIN EVENT

Second round of the tournament tips off today across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV. Ohio State/VCU looks like it could be a good one today at 4:40p on TNT.
