ON THE AIR

It’s the end of the line for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. The PGA of America announced that it was ending the annual event once and for all after cancelling the 2015 event amid controversy over the use of Trump National as host. In a statement, the org said that “When the PGA Grand Slam of Golf was launched in 1979, the golf world was much different than it is today. The PGA Tour’s wrap-around schedule, the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, plus other important international events, make the fall schedule very busy and hectic for the top players in the world,” adding “It had also become challenging to attract fans, television viewership and media interest. While we have enjoyed staging the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, given those many factors, the timing is right to discontinue the event.”

Longtime FOX Sports NFL staple Tony Siragusa appears to be off the books for the company. Multiple reports, including The Big Lead, state that the sideline reporter and analyst will not return to the network after nine seasons with the channel. Siragusa was most recently paired up with Thom Brennaman and Charles Davis.

If the NHL opts to approve expansion bids from Las Vegas and/or Quebec, the league laid out plans for the subsequent NHL expansion draft during meetings with GMs yesterday. If the League adds one expansion team, current teams would lose no more than one player, while two expansion teams would cap it at two. GMs were informed that they would be allowed to protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender or eight skaters of any position and a goaltender with first- and second-year pros exempt from the process. Meanwhile, per TSN’s Darren Dreger, NHL general managers were notified  that a decision regarding expansion would be made before June’s 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Turner Sports and CBS Sports will see Georgia State University men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter join their coverage of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship as a guest studio analyst. He will appear across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV. Hunter will join host Matt Winer and analysts Wally Szczerbiak and Seth Davis for first round coverage today from Turner Studios in Atlanta.

GAMING/ESPORTS

Non-endemic brands took another step toward eSports immersion as Pepsi inked a deal with OpTic Gaming to launch its new Brisk brand, Brisk Mate. rEvXP represents OpTic Gaming and facilitated the deal for the famed squad. “Sometimes it’s better to put the product into the hands of influencers who the audience looks up to instead of trying to figure out what they think they may want to hear or see,” said OpTic Gaming owner Hector Rodriguez, who noted that "The Brisk Mate brand team showed a genuine interest in eSports and they have been very collaborative in reviewing the most authentic ways to speak to our fans. They have given us quite a bit of creative latitude to express ourselves with their product(s) and it will definitely be an evolving relationship with a lot of surprises along the way for the fans and the consumers alike."

Xbox unveiled plans for the Xbox Live Tournaments Platform at a GDC 2016 panel. The platform targets developers, who will be able to integrate tournaments into games. Microsoft announced partnerships with esports networks ESL and FaceIt, who will stage tournaments using the platform.
