CYNOPSISKIDS
03.16.16

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 16, 2016, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Kids!

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

The countdown is on. Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup make their long-awaited return to Cartoon Network in a reimagined series premiering with back-to-back episodes on Monday, April 4 at 6p. “Powerpuff Girls will deliver the best of the old show – but add a healthy injection of 2016,” Rob Sorcher, CN global chief content officer, tells CynKids. “There are artists on that crew who grew up on PPG, in some cases this series inspired them to become animators. So the passion for this property is palpable and it shows in the execution.” Sorcher says the associated mobile game features a unique “dual mode” play – one for sugar (combat mode) and one for spice (puzzle mode).

The series is produced by Cartoon Network Studios, with Nick Jennings (Adventure Time, SpongeBob SquarePants) serving as exec producer and Bob Boyle (Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!) as co-exec producer. The original PPG series created by Craig McCracken premiered in 1996, scored two Emmys and has earned $2.5 billion in retail sales. The new series will be supported by a consumer products campaign including a Moschino fashion line.

The Girls are no doubt a big focus of CN’s Upfront this year, for which the net is hosting advertisers and agencies at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank. “We’re showing them how we are ideating for each platform and how a show could start on mobile or start as an app and make its way to a linear show or just stay in that space,” Joe Hogan, EVP, Turner emerging consumer ad sales, tells CynKids. “There is no one correct recipe.”

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Ariana Grande and DNCE are scheduled to perform at the 2016 Radio Disney Music Awards, which will air as a two-hour special Sunday, May 1 at 7p on Disney Channel. Katherine McNamara and Emeraude Toubia of Freeform’s Shadowhunters are onboard to present.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Production companies Breakthrough Entertainment and Buccaneer Media are the team co-producing new live-action series Ride for Nickelodeon and Canada’s YTV. The series follows the adventures of Katherine “Kit” Bridges when she and her father move to England for his new job at an elite equestrian boarding school. Ride was created by writers Jill Girling (Life with Derek, Satisfaction) and Lori Mather-Welch (Would be Kings, Queer As Folk). Exec producers for Breakthrough Entertainment are Joan Lambur, Ira Levy, Peter Williamson, Michael McGuigan, Nat Abraham and Shelley Scarrow; exec producer for UK-based Buccaneer is Tony Wood.

NBC has already picked up a sophomore season of Little Big Shots. The kid talent show, hosted by Steve Harvey, garnered 14.8 million viewers in its time-slot premiere on Sunday, March 13, after attracting 12.8 million viewers during a sneak peek airing on March 8.

DIGITAL UPDATE

SVOD service Oznoz Video, created for bilingual kids, has extended its agreement with Sesame Workshop. Oznoz features Sesame content such as Elmo’s Potty Time, The Great Outdoors and 1,2,3 Count With Me in languages including French, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and Persian. Customers can access the $9.99/month platform via mobile devices, browsers and OTT services including Roku, Amazon FireTV and Fire TV stick.

APPS & GAMES

Disney launched Disney Build It: Frozen, a new app enabling kids to build their own version of Arendelle alongside the characters from the smash hit film. Players can make Frozen-themed snow globe worlds by creating and customizing buildings such as Elsa’s Castle, Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post and Arendelle towers. Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Sven and Kristoff will play along and add musical themes to the world, and accompany players on mini-missions. Download costs $3.99.

Peppy Pals, a children’s game that first gained popularity in Sweden, is now available in the U.S. The game is an interactive experience that teaches the value of empathy and emotional intelligence. Peppy Pals consists of three apps: Peppy Pals Farm ($3.99), Peppy Pals Beach ($4.99) and Reggie’s Play Date ($1.99), via iOS, Android and Amazon.

Infinity’s latest update, Marvel Battlegrounds, features new figures for players to collect and use in the game, including Black Panther, Vision, black suit Spider-Man, a First Avenger-style Captain America and Ant-Man. The play set introduces brawler action, which lets up to four players fight across Marvel-inspired locales using the new characters and any other Marvel figures released for the Infinity franchises.

At the same time, four in 10 parents feel their child does not spend enough time being read to. Most parents reported that children had ready access to electronics  more than half said their child uses a television (65 percent) or a tablet (54 percent) at home.

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer and poster for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children! From director Tim Burton, based on the best-selling novel, it centers on Jake, who discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times and finds a magical place known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. The film hits theaters on Friday, September 30, 2016.

CBBC, the BBC‘s children’s television channel that’s home to Blue Peter, Horrible Histories and Danger Mouse, unveiled a new logo on Monday. “Our new logo is not overt, it doesn’t scream ‘children’s TV’ but its various iterations are fun and unpredictable and have broad appeal,” said network controller Cheryl Taylor. Viewers expressed concerns last year that CBBC, the older of the corporation’s two dedicated channels for children, would follow BBC3 online after the BBC announced a new digital portal for its children’s TV offerings, but BBC director general Tony Hall assured there were no plans to axe either CBBC or the CBeebies channels.

Yolanda Adams, Sara Bareilles and Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros will contribute original songs to The SpongeBob Musical. The show opens June 7 in Chicago; tickets are available beginning this week.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles topper Pete Ploszek scored a recurring role on MTV series Teen Wolf. Ploszek will again play Leonardo in upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

The collaboration marksthe first time that Better Life for Girls has tapped into an animated series.
