IN THE NEWS

Fox News’ Megyn Kelly (The Kelly File) will host a one-hour special on Fox, interviewing celebrities and discussing her time covering the 2016 presidential campaign. Bill Geddie (The View) will produce the show, slated for Monday, May 23 at 8p. Kelly’s star was already on the rise at FNC when presidential candidate Donald Trump’s attacks after the first GOP debate raised her profile; Fox News’ next debate is Monday, March 21.

In a carriage dispute that threatens NBCUniversal channels if a deal isn’t reached by Sunday, DISH Network filed a lawsuit that could keep networks including NBC, Telemundo, USA, Syfy, Bravo, CNBC and MSNBC on the air. Saying its goal is to reach a mutually beneficial deal, DISH added it expects to file for arbitration, which would prevent NBC from blacking out DISH customers. “Under the conditions imposed by the FCC and Department of Justice in approving the Comcast-NBCUniversal merger, NBC is forbidden from blacking out its networks if a pay-TV provider chooses, in its sole discretion, to exercise its right for binding arbitration,” said DISH. NBCUni, insisting it is just “asking Dish to pay fair market value,” had warned viewers on Monday that channels could go dark absent a new agreement.

The Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network announced a strategic partnership with Natcom, which produces health and well-being content, to include health and lifestyle segments as part of its regular programming. Natcom will supply HITN-TV with 24 monthly segments in Spanish designed to promote healthful living habits among Hispanic viewers.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

The Voice judge Christina Aguilera is partnering with Spike TV for Tracks, a music-based game show, produced by Mission Control Media and MX Productions in association with Lionsgate. “Having finely tuned my ear for music over the years, I thought it would be fun to test other folks and see if they can identify a track - with a twist - since contestants will have to focus on a single component of a song,” said Aguilera. “I’m excited to have Tracks debuting on Spike TV, and proud to have this as the first project springing from our first-look deal with Lionsgate.” Tracks will debut as a half-hour special later this year.

E! mixes business with pleasure in Mariah’s World, a docu-series following pop diva Mariah Carey during her European tour, as she plans her wedding to business mogul James Packer. Bunim/Murray is producing in association with Magic Carpet Productions.

COMING UP

A&E is airing back to back episodes of Wahlburgers this season, “which is new for us,” 44 Blue Productions president Rasha Drachkovitch tells Cynopsis. Tonight kicks off with “Family & Faith,” in which Mark meets the Pope. “Simply put, this episode was an amazing experience,” says Drachkovitch. “Mark was asked to emcee the Festival of the Families, so we traveled to Philadelphia to capture this one-in-a-lifetime event. Over 750,000 people were in attendance – right where Rocky Balboa ran the steps in the Rocky films. Aretha Franklin and Andrea Bocelli performed – it was larger-than-life. This episode took the series to a new level because it meant so much to Mark and the entire Wahlberg family, and we were proud to be there to capture it all and share it with fans of the show.”

It’s not OK anymore: Meredith Corp. is replacing American Media as publishing company partner for OK!TV, which had been a co-production of Unconventional Studios and AMI, owner of OK! Magazine. AT THE UPFRONTS

The theme of National Geographic Channels’ Upfront breakfast on Tuesday was Mars, and the programming message was the power of storytelling to change the world. “While many networks are seemingly out in the marketplace trying to find and distinguish their brands, our strength is that we already have one  a global brand with a legacy in science, exploration, and adventure that is synonymous with quality,” said Global Networks CEO Courteney Monroe at midtown Manhattan’s Park Hyatt. “By harnessing an unparalleled portfolio of media assets through National Geographic Partners, we’re going to offer true 360 degree experiences, extending our storytelling for both viewers and advertisers across an unrivaled number of platforms.” Monroe said Nat Geo is also luring more millennials with social and environmental programming, “because millennials care about social issues.”

New programming includes six-part global event series Mars, from Imagine Entertainment and Radical Media (exec producer Ron Howard was on hand to sketch out the doc/scripted combo); Origins (Asylum Entertainment and melodysheep), hosted by passionate-about-the topic Jason Silva (Brain Games), exploring how humankind took shape; Chain of Command (National Geographic Studios), offering inside access to the U.S. military’s mission in Afghanistan; Lawless Oceans (Wall to Wall Media), following the mystery of murder at sea, and Deep Freeze (National Geographic Studios), set on a base in Antarctica. Also on the way: Earth Live! (Bunim Murray Productions), capturing live footage of nature from Australia to Brazil. Coming back is an expanded Explorer as a weekly “docu-talk” series, debuting this fall on Nat Geo’s 171 channels globally.

And of course there were puppies, both real (not to worry – already adopted), and on-screen. Coming on Nat Geo WILD – marking its most-watched year ever  is Project Puppy (Blast Films), a reality show about six families raising pooches; Animal ER (Propagate Content), set in a veterinary hospital, and Pet Talk (Leepson Bounds Entertainment), a talk show for animal lovers. Event Savage Kingdom (Icon Films) shows the real-life rivalries of predators and prey in the wild.

Upshot? The networks are offering “a cornucopia of amazingness,” Monroe told Cynopsis.
