CBS renewed 18 primetime shows, for a total of 20 returning series. “The best way to launch new shows in the fall and throughout the season is to surround them with a strong and stable lineup of successful series,” said Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment. And the winners are: dramas NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Person of Interest, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, Criminal Minds, Elementary and The Good Wife; comedies 2 Broke Girls, The Millers, Mike & Molly, Mom and Two and a Half Men; reality series The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss, and news shows 60 Minutes and 48 Hours. The net had already struck multi-year deals for The Big Bang Theory and Survivor. Not making the cut (yet): freshman series Hostages, Intelligence and The Crazy Ones.

IN THE NEWS

Will digital ad spending surpass spending on television in just a few years? A study from eMarketer reported by Media Life forecasts 2018 as the year digital dollars surpass TV, with mobile alone growing from 2.6 percent of ad spending in 2012 to 24.9 percent. While TV will still account for 36.1 percent of spending, if the report proves accurate, pity print: U.S. ad spending would drop from 20.7 percent to 14.4 percent by 2018.

The Obama administration has asked to weigh in on the broadcasters-versus-Aereo battle at the case’s April 22 Supreme Court hearing. “Because the Court’s decision in this case will likely address important questions about the scope of public-performance right in the context of novel technologies for transmitting and viewing copyrighted audiovisual works using the Internet, the United States has a substantial interest in presenting its views,” said the request. The White House has already filed a brief siding with the broadcasters.

The date for a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about the proposed Comcast/Time Warner Cable merger has been set for April 2. Senator Patrick Leahy, who chairs the committee, said, “Millions of Americans rely on cable connectivity to receive the programs they love and to access the Internet… The pending merger is an important opportunity to examine how Americans access these services.” The deal must pass muster with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Justice Department.

E!‘s digital lifestyle destination, The Trend, has been renamed The Fabulist, offering online companion content for viewers of the new weekly series by the same name. Launching Monday, March 17 at 8:30p, the pop culture series, hosted by Kristin Cavallari (The Hills) and Orly Shani (Fashion Star), offers the latest on fashion, beauty and lifestyle trends.

Starting this week, ABC‘s late-night news show is making an earlier appearance, on Saturdays. Nightline Prime will air at 9p, opposite the second hour of NBC‘s new Dateline Mystery. A Nightline limited series, The Lookout, aired last summer.

Cinema advertising’s Screenvision is holding its second annual multi-city upfront event starting April 2 in NYC, featuring an advance screening of Marvel’s Captain America. “While broadcast and cable TV are important components of media plans, marketers and agencies are under increasing pressure to execute media plans that augment their TV buys,” CEO Travis Reid tells Cynopsis. “When TV viewing is down on the weekends, we are at our highest capacity.”

Creating the Perfect Media Pitch: The New Secrets to Selling to Advertisers on Tuesday, April 8will show you how to distinguish your programming from the pack, and position your network as the optimum home for brands. Agency, brand and network experts gather for a webinar that explains the new partnering opportunities advertisers expect, must-haves for today’s sales calls and best practices for determining a brand’s goal. Tonight’s season two finale of Monsters & Mysteries in America “gives spring breakers a treat,” Marc Etkind, general manager of Destination America, tells Cynopsis, “but maybe they won’t want to go in the water after hearing accounts of a beach-loving bigfoot, a bayou werewolf and America’s own Loch Ness Monster.” Show airs on DA at 10p.

UPFRONT UPDATES

An elegant lunch at NYC’s Gramercy Park Hotel was the setting for Crown Media‘s upfront presentation on Thursday, where EVP of ad sales and digital media Ed Georger said he anticipates a 20 percent increase in advertiser commitments at the upfront, explaining, “Advertisers are putting a higher value on original content and a higher value on original family programming.” And the network is truly walking the talk: CEO Bill Abbott remarked that unlike other sister channels, there’s no duplicated programming between Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel.

Hallmark Channel unveiled a slate of 15 original movie premieres that includes the seventh chapter in its highest-rated franchise, Good Witch’s Wonder, starring Catherine Bell and Chris Potter, and the return of the net’s holiday movie line-up, “Countdown to Christmas,” which will include over 1200 hours of family-friendly holiday-themed programming. Among the yuletide offerings: Debbie Macomber’s Mr. Miracle, another partnership with the bestselling author. “We are committed to providing new, original stories that the whole family can watch and enjoy together,” said Michelle Vicary, EVP, programming for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, adding that “is what separates our network as the leader in quality family entertainment.” Another big name joining the Crown Media family is Martha Williamson, former writer and executive producer of the hit Touched By An Angel. Williamson is the writer and executive producer of the new series Signed, Sealed, Delivered, premiering April 20th.

The net will also celebrate love and romance with 24-hour programming in “Countdown to Valentine’s,” from January 31-February 14, and is bringing back Kitten Bowl, a Super Bowl counter-programming event that reached 6.1 million viewers P2+ unduplicated viewers during its four airings in February. Encouraged by the success of the Kitten Bowl, Hallmark will debut the Kitten Paw-Star Game in summer 2015 as part of its “Pet Project initiative devoted to celebrating pets raising awareness of the plight of shelter animals.”

Biggest news of all: Hallmark Movie Channel is getting a new name, a new tagline and a new logo – along with an increased emphasis on mystery dramas. Beginning in Q4, the net will rebrand as Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, with a “Mystery Wheel” launching in 2015 featuring three movie franchises that follow the same primary characters over the course of several months. First up: Garage Sale Mystery, starring Lori Loughlin (When Calls the Heart), continues the plot of a 2013 Hallmark Channel movie of that name, in early 2015.“Great mysteries have always been a strong part of Hallmark Movie Channel’s brand,” said Vicary. “The nature of the franchise compels viewers to come back for more suspenseful action from their favorite characters each.” It’s not all about suspense, though. Following record-breaking ratings during Q4 2013, HMC is bringing back “The Most Wonderful Movies of Christmas,” featuring two original movie premieres, The Christmas Secret and The Christmas Shepherd, starting Monday, November 3, and 24/7 holiday themed programming.

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

Ovation acquired U.S. premiere rights to arts-centric series from BBC Worldwide North America for a new daily programming block, “Morning Canvas.” Shows include Sex and Sensibility: The Allure of Art Nouveau, documentary series A Very British Murder and The Aristocrats, Treasures of Ancient Egypt and Unfinished Masterpieces.

A+E Networks UK channel Crime + Investigation acquired U.K. pay TV rights to premiere seasons 16 and 17 of Judge Judy from CBS Studios International.

MIPTV MENTIONS

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

Channel 4 commissioned Arrow Media‘s Mayday: The Passenger Who Landed a Plane, about a man’s harrowing experience when the pilot of a plane was flying in collapsed. “We were able to secure exclusive access to sources that had never been seen, heard or used before,” John Smithson, Arrow Media joint creative director, tells Cynopsis. “Full air traffic control tapes enabled us to hear the entire conversations between the ground and the hero passenger, John Wildey. We also managed to get access to the audio from conversations that John had with the RAF search and rescue helicopter team.”
