IN THE NEWS

CBS This Morning co-host Charlie Rose is back in the morning show saddle today, after undergoing heart surgery last month to replace an aortic valve. “I can’t wait to see my friends at CTM who have been so gracious in sitting in for me and making up for the fact that I was not there,” said Rose on Friday. “The messages, the heartwarming well wishing, the sense of recover soon has all been memorable to me.”

The deal’s off: Eldridge Industries, owner of Dick Clark Productions, said it has “terminated its agreement” to sell dcp to China’s Wanda Group for $1 billion, and filed a motion to compel release of escrowed funds it is entitled to “given Wanda’s failure to consummate the sale.” It’s not a surprise Wanda isn’t ponying up – the company’s revenue suffered a 14% drop in 2016, its first decline in over 10 years.

Nickelodeon debuted an on-air and online brand refresh over the weekend with the 2017 Kids’ Choice Awards. The visual narrative of Nickelodeon’s new look was executed by combining real kids with 2D and 3D graphics. “We really wanted to highlight how much surprise and fun is a part of kids’ everyday lives, so we took as our inspiration the surreal nature of GIFs, memes and emoticons and created an entire new visual vocabulary,” said Michael Waldron, SVP creative director art and design for Nickelodeon Group and Nick@Nite. “Using a mix of real kids and on-air talent, the refresh looks through the lens of how kids see things – the unpredictable, extraordinary and joyful nature of a child’s imagination.” The new look was created with agency Superstudio.

The Huffington Post and ABCEntertainment are teaming for a month-long collaboration on the third season of American Crime, which premiered Sunday at 10p. ABC is integrating the drama’s content into HuffPost’s Daily Flash Briefing on Amazon Alexa and Weekly News Quiz on Google Home for month of March, the first advertisement of its kind within the Alexa platform. “American Crime this season explores timely, socioeconomic issues, and The Huffington Post was the perfect partner to reach an informed and socially invested audience,”said Darren Schillace, SVP, marketing strategy, ABC Entertainment. “In a climate where headline news is quickly consumed, integrating into HuffPost’s existing applications on Alexa and Google Home allowed us to engage our target audience with content from our show that would highly resonate with them.”

Dish Network, a bidder in the FCC’s incentive auction of 600 MHz, aims to raise $1 billion by selling convertible notes. “The net proceeds of the placement are intended to be used for strategic transactions, which may include wireless and spectrum-related strategic transactions, and for other general corporate purposes,” said the company.

Democratic members of the Senate Commerce Committee sent a letter on Friday to FCC chairman Ajit Pai with follow-up questions to a March 8 hearing, during which Pai was noncommittal when asked whether he agreed or disagreed with Trump’s assertion that the media is the enemy of the American people. “As FCC chairman, you have direct authority over the nation’s broadcast and media marketplace,” said the letter. “Ultimately, the decisions that you, your fellow commissioners, and the agency staff which you oversee make affect the viability and sustainability of news media.”

Is White House press secretary Sean Spicer warming up to the press – and vice versa? During a televised briefing Friday, asked whether a tweet (sigh) by President Trump violated federal regulations prohibiting comments on jobs reports, Spicer drew laughs by warning, “Don’t make me make the podium move!”. Spicer was referring to Melissa McCarthy’s podium-shoving portrayal of him on Saturday Night Live.

Billions co-creator Brian Koppelman tweeted his support for New York U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, fired from his job by Team Trump on Saturday, after Bharara refused Jeff Sessions’ request that he and 45 others tender their resignations. “You’re a great man, Preet. An inspiration,” posted Koppelman. “Can’t wait to see what’s next. Tech advisor + cameo?” Chimed in co-creator David Levien, “Writing staff?”

The season 29 premiere of CBS’s The Amazing Race has been moved from Friday, April 21 to Thursday, March 30 at 10p. Training Day shifts to Saturdays starting April 8, with all 7 remaining episodes broadcast on consecutive weeks; production had wrapped before the unexpected death of series star Bill Paxton on February 25 at age 61. Undercover Boss returns with new eps Friday, April 28.
