IN THE NEWS

Looks like CBS will remain at the center orbit of The Big Bang Theory. CBS CEO Les Moonves yesterday told investors the network is “on the two yard line” in negotiating a two-year, 48-ep renewal of series, as well as prequel Little Sheldon, about the character Sheldon Cooper as a young‘un growing up in Texas. The new series likely would be scheduled to follow Big Bang. Fun fact: Zoe Perry, who was cast in the Little Sheldon pilot to play Sheldon’s mom, is the daughter of Laurie Metcalf, who plays Sheldon’s mom on Big Bang.

Moonves said he expects to pick up two comedies and two dramas from the 17 pilots in contention for the fall primetime schedule. He also praised CBS’ late-night lineup, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which has seen a ratings rise in recent weeks, and The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Despite digital services selecting their content based on audience data, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes is very clear that at HBO, “we’re programming the show.” Speaking yesterday at the Deutsche Bank Media & Telecom Conference, Bewkes added, “That’s how we get big breakthroughs. If you ask creators what they want, most of them go with that.” Still, Bewkes credited Netflix for driving the global digital streaming business, including HBO Go. “You end up having more demand for hit shows, and hit networks, and crowding out of less successful networks and shows,” he said. He also sounded a call for the industry to unite around advertising, particularly around VOD, noting: “It’s the issue on advanced advertising, on distribution packages. …Until it gets more universal, the consumer habit doesn’t light the match and let it go. We believe we’re now there. That’s part of the reason we joined up with AT&T.”

Speaking of HBO, the network updated its feature presentation lead-in in a modern makeover with a nod to the 1984 original. The lead-in interstitial has been reimagined with new music, courtesy of Man Made Music and new graphics courtesy of Imaginary Forces.

Univision Communications Inc. partnered with polling and market intelligence company CivicScience to provide research on the Hispanic consumer and emergent trends. The partnership will combine Univision’s Hispanic audience with CivicScience’s next-generation polling and data analysis platform to deliver deep, real-time insights to advertisers, brands, political organizations and investors. CivicScience launched its polling technology across a subset of Univision web and mobile properties in October 2016.

The 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony date has been set. The event will air January 21, 2018, with TNT and TBS live simulcasting the show. This year, TNT and TBS’ telecasts of the SAG Awards drew more than 5 million viewers and grew audience growth compared to last year, including increases of +50% among A18-49, +45% among A18-34 and +33% among total viewers.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY NEWS

Fusion TV will commemorate International Women’s Day today by highlighting stories by and about women, culminating with a series of primetime specials – ranging from serious to irreverent – that tackle issues including maternal health, sexuality, and the definition of feminist in the age of Trump. Among highlights are Sex. Right. Now: Women Do It Too at 8p, featuring Cleo Stiller getting real about female sexuality; The Other F-Word: Feminist at 8:30p; and The Naked Truth: Death by Delivery at 9p, a doc that investigates an often overlooked crisis that is killing American mothers: childbirth and pregnancy-related causes.

MTV is supporting today’s #DayWithoutAWoman big time. In the US and global English-speaking markets will flip the logo upside down, morphing the “M” into a red “W” for “women” on-air, online and across social media accounts. MTV News will feature hourly messaging driving traffic to Strike.MTV.com and articles, podcasts and reports throughout the day; and all social media accounts, run almost entirely by women according to the network, will go on “strike.”

UTA will participate by holding off-site events for its female employees in its offices in NY, LA and Toronto.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

MGM Television and entertainment shingle Jukin Media signed a co-production deal to create, develop and produce unscripted original series for network, cable and premium SVOD. They initially will focus on competition series, game shows and talent shows that feature user-generated content. MGM Television is behind successful unscripted brands including Survivor and Shark Tank; Jukin Media has exec-produced series including FailArmy (MTV2), Now That’s Funny! (Viacom International) and World’s Funniest (Fox).

Production started in Vancouver on Somewhere Between, the ABC limited drama series starring Paula Patton (Warcraft) slated to air this summer.  The pilot was written by Stephen Tolkin (Brothers & Sisters) and is based on a Korean format from SBS.

Proper Television announced production is underway for Last Stop Garage, for Discovery Canada and the first unscripted series to be filmed in Labrador, one of the most isolated and harshest environments in North America. Proper also is in preproduction on season 2 of Tougher Than It Looks, hosted by Andrew Younghusband for Discovery.
