IN THE NEWS

Late night host Jimmy Kimmel will be back to host the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, airing Sunday, September 18 at ABC. Kimmel also manned the mic in 2012. Creative Arts ceremonies will take place Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11.

The war of words between Univision and AT&T continues, in the midst of a carriage dispute that knocked Univision off U-Verse days ahead of the net’s March 9 Democratic presidential candidate debate. Accusing Univision of attempting to “extort an outrageous price increase,” AT&T’s EVP, external and legislative affairs Jim Cicconi said on Sunday, “If Univision really cares about their audiences, they will immediately restore their channels to U-Verse homes while we figure this out.” On Monday, Univision’s EVP, government relations and public policy Jessica Herrera-Flanigan countered with, “We are always proud to stand with the Hispanic community, regardless of the costs to Univision. For us, it is about standing up for the future of multicultural media and the opportunity for it to thrive in a multiplatform marketplace.”

comScore reported on Monday that the filing of its annual report will be delayed due to “certain potential accounting matters.” The company, which completed its acquisition of measurement company Rentrak in January, suspended its share buyback and postponed its investor day. “comScore’s Audit Committee continues to work vigorously with its independent counsel and advisors to complete its internal review as soon as possible,” said the company in an 8-k filing. Shares on Monday dropped as much as 35 percent following the news.

Awkward: Arnold Schwarzenegger, set to take Donald Trump’s seat on season 8 of NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice, announced he is endorsing Trump rival John Kasich for the Republican presidential nomination. Of course, the candidate does still have the endorsement of another reality star, Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson, who went Trump stumping in January (dad Phil is team Cruz). Apprentice returns this spring.

Season five of Amazon’s Ripper Street will be its last. The period crime drama, first cancelled by BBC One after two seasons, is currently filming in Dublin.

Hulu will be the Official Media Sponsor for the Paley Center for Media. The partnership begins with the 33rd annual PaleyFest LA from March 11-20; events will include panels with the casts and creative teams from Empire, Scandal, The Big Bang Theory, American Horror Story: Hotel, and Better Call Saul, among others. Hulu subscribers will have exclusive access to content and footage of PaleyFest LA 2016 events, as well as behind the scenes interviews and clips. (Programs will not be livestreamed, but offered through VOD afterward.)

Apparently consumers haven’t gotten the memo that virtual reality technology is the new big thing. “Despite extensive media coverage of Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard and other virtual reality devices, fully two thirds of consumers are unaware of the technology,” said a report from Horizon Media, which predicted it will take “several more years” before VR takes hold. For now, 34 percent of those surveyed said they aren’t interested in owning a VR device because, “If I want to have experiences, I can just go do them in real life.”

COMING UP

Syfy’s The Internet Ruined My Life, offering first person accounts of social media missteps with devastating consequences, launches Wednesday, March 9 at 10p. Show comes from Atomic Entertainment’s Jerry Kolber (Brain Games), who describes it to Cynopsis as “an addictive, can’t-look-away cautionary tale about the intersection of technology and our personal lives.” Atomic’s documentary, 14 Minutes from Earth, about a secret mission to space, premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival next month. “With six more projects in the works this year, Atomic is quickly becoming the go-to company for fun, information-driven programming,” says Kolber.

In TCL five-parter What If We Get Married?, couples who care for each other but have never had a traditional romantic relationship take the plunge. Docu-series launches Friday, April 1 at 9:30p.

Educational pay TV net Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network is adding two sports shows to the lineup: Gillette World Sports and Football (as in soccer) Review. The well-known programs will air back-to-back on HITN Tuesdays and Thursdays and during the weekend.

Up to speed: The cast of CMT’s Party Down South heads to the NASCAR Spring Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500 on the episode airing Thursday, March 10 at 9p.

RETURNING SHOWS

Freeform picked up comedy Young & Hungry for season four. “Young & Hungry is the first series we’ve renewed under the new Freeform banner,” said Karey Burke, EVP, programming and development. “It remains a staple in our comedy diet. The show’s humor, quality and wonderful actors fit perfectly with our evolving brand.” Freeform rebranded from ABC Family in January.

E! ordered a second season of Hollywood Medium With Tyler Perry. The show starring a 20-year-old clairvoyant premiered in January as the net’s most-watched unscripted series launch in three years, and is averaging close to 900,000 P18-49 and 1.6 million total viewers in Live+3.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Brands would do well to think twice before slashing TV spend, according to new data from TiVo Research. A study conducted in partnership with media properties including A+E Networks and Turner showed that when 15 consumer packaged goods brands cut their TV advertising budgets, the majority lost a much greater amount of value in sales. For 11 of the 15 CPG brands analyzed, sales returns dropped by a combined $94 million when TV spend was cut year-over-year. This accounted for 69 percent of the 2013 incremental sales attributed to TV advertising. In 2014, the average on-air brand was reaching only 25 percent of its purchasers in an average week (down from 35 percent in 2013), leaving 75 percent open to competition. “Cutting TV budgets may seem like an easy way to save money, but as this study shows, brands stand to lose more in sales than they stand to gain in media savings,”Betsy Rella, VP, Research, TiVo Research, tells Cynopsis.

Sony Pictures Television is launching True Crime channel in the UK on Freeview. Programming will include the likes of Deadly Women, The Devil You Know and Paternity Court. “True Crime will be a dedicated crime channel, where viewers who are fascinated by true life stories will be able to have everything in one place,” said Sony EVP of Western Europe Kate Marsh. “The channel further builds on the success of our Freeview channel portfolio and marks our commitment to the UK television market.”

Japan’s Nippon Television Network Corporation will arrive at MIPCOM 2016 with three new formats: game show Battle of the Homes, being co-developed with Red Arrow Entertainment, dating show Love Liar and fashion competition Celebrity Style Battle.
